I suspect that this will go sort of like the last big official tourney. Skarm kicked ass right up until the last round of the finals, because someone used Fly on a Rayquazza.

Incidentally, most Japanese players don't bother with EV training and seem to ignore Natures. So I expect there to be a massive one-sided US win.

I lived in Japan for all of July 2004, and I can vouch for this firsthand. Hell, one guy let me borrow his Fire Red, start it over, trade all the stuff to my Leaf Green and just start it back over for him while I was there.

You think hardcore Pokemon players are rare geeks in the US? Well, they are. The problem is that the US is a big, big country, and Japan isn't. That's why it's rare to see "pro" Japanese Pokemon players.

I've always wanted to see a Team Rocket version of Poke'mon games, or something akin to that. Being Nintendo though, it's only a dream.

We (Neo Productions) were working on that years ago, you can still find a very old patch of it under the name "Pokemon Neo: Rocket" - along with an "Adventure" version - on Zophar's Domain. Too bad we never finished those..

While we're on the subject of Pokemon hacks, anyone here ever hear of Pokemon Shiny Gold? Basically, this guy Zel took the Fire Red game and made a really eloborate hack for it that turns it into a "high-def" version of Pokemon Gold. For the most part it's an exact copy, but there are a few differences:

The only items he has to work with are the slots for the ones already programmed, so there isn't any Pokegear. Instead, you have a Town Map, a Phone Card, and a PokeBeeper. Basically, you register people's numbers on your Phone Card, they leave you messages on your Beeper, and you call them back at these coooooool phone booths that he's programmed into the game. They're pretty numerous, about one to most landmarks, so it's never a hassle to find one.

There's Apricorns, but their sprites are random item sprites. There isn't any day-to-night progression, and it's always raining in Ecruteak. All the time-based events, like wild Lapras, Apricorns & Berries, Kurt's Pokeballs, day-of-the-week children, etc. are all on a steps-based system, so that you have to take X number of steps after any of those events for it to "recharge," say, and you're free to do another event. Wild pokemon like Ladyba, Zubat, etc. are found at all times of the day...

He's inserted all the Hoenn pokemon in the wild or through events, but they're pretty rare (like, 1 - 3% in the wild) or are through events. You're only forced to take a Clampearl from Lance because there isn't a Whirlpool HM. You could alternatively fish for a wild Wailmer.

It's... a lot of fun! You could always go back and play the real Gold & Silver if those kinds of changes bug you, but there's just enoughof a twist to this version that I think it comes off more like a "Fire Gold," if you know what I mean.




There's also an "X" version that ups the difficulty quite a bit if you're looking for a challenge. I'm playing that one.

I'm not too familiar with handheld emulators, can they emulate linking to other units, either via network, or even just running the same emulator on your computer at the same time?

The question leads into is the Shiny Gold hack compatible with the real GBA Poke'mon roms?

Zel altered all the trade evolutions to trigger either by level or stones instead, anyway, so there's no point unless you just want to trade over to a legit rom.

I'd go, but having just returned from the US, I have no desire to go back right away (home is, after all, home) and I've already secured a Darkrai from someone here (drack or Sephfire, I think).

Nintendo rarely if ever uses Game Freak's built-in events for the secret legendaries. In fact, the only one I remember them actually using was the one built into GSC for getting Celebi. You had to download the GS Ball off their cell phone network thingy on certain days...

Also, does anyone have a spare Black Sludge item? I've been looking for one for weeks. Going to the Safari Zone, packing something with Compound Eyes, and trekking through mud almost every day has gotten to the point where I'm just not able to go any more. Croagunks are only 5% appearance rate, and only 5% of them hold Black Sludges. Even with a near-full box of the fuckers, I still haven't found one.

And no talk of the Torn World? For shame.

TBH, there aren't enough people on OCR who actually obsess over Pokemon to hold much of a discussion. I used to be all over Smogon, but there are just too many newbs now. I think there are more die-hard Poke-nerds on /v/ now than any of the other communities I know of.

Is it because they ditch the annoying formulaic plot of the show for a much better formulaic plot in the movies? Is it because of the far better music? I don't know why, but I'd much rather watch any one of the movies over the show, any day.

As for "which poke is best and why", that's entering a terrible place. Far too many times have I seen threads like that evolve (with use Flamewar Stone) into fanboyish fights over nothing. Avoid at all costs!

Well Damned my good man, I have a black sludge. I'm not all that thrilled at the prospect of NOT having it anymore, is the problem.

I like getting stuff, though. I don't have any Roost or Will-o-wisp at the moment, and Stone Edge or X-scissor are always valuable. Pretty much any TM you get via the Battle Tower. On the pokemon end, I love getting things with egg moves so I can breed dudes for future battlan'.



I normally enjoy the pokemon movies well enough, though admittedly I haven't watched any after the Latias/Latios one. The Jirachi/Deoxys movies looked sooooo boring... The Lucario/Mew one looks good, though. Manaphy, don't care. And the latest two definitely look cool enough. TBH I just can't stand the dub voices most of the time.

Has anyone here got My Pokemon Ranch?
I got it, and I have to say, I like it A LOT.

First of all, I was ecstatic at the prospect of a storage system for my 350+ pkmn, so that was pretty cool. Second, I love the way they look! Like little origami pokemon!
But most of all, I love the interactions between pokemon and the miis. I made my personal mii the caretaker of the pkmn I imported, so my 6 main pkmn always stick with me. Also, they all act exactly like they should! For example, my gardevoir rarely leaves my side and she often just floats around my head or smiles with the other pokemon. My Primeape, on the other hand, constantly runs from one end of the ranch to the other, attacking any pokemon that get in its way. Pretty much how they act in the show and games.

Also, every pkmn responds in similar ways, not just special ones like your party. I watched as a dewgong was chased by a turtwig (Who don't like each other, due to the type matchup) until it was cornered, where it spun around, froze the turtwig in a block on ice and ran off as fast as it could. I think it's the fact that the game can support 1000 pkmn, plus 20 miis plus toys all interacting this way ON SCREEN at the SAME TIME that caused a drop in the graphics. After all, trying to account for every single pkmn's personality would have to take a toll somewhere.

Another cool thing: the pictures you take on the ranch and save to your SD card can actually be uploaded to your computer. I've got a picture of my mii surrounded by my team as my desktop right now.

All in all, I think it's a great little program if you have way too much pokemon and can't bear to get rid of all those bidoofs. (The $10 price range is a little steep, though, for a fancy screensaver.)

I would get PokeRanch but Nintendo sadly doesn't like my Credit Card. It's not that I don't have any money, It's just that APO addresses aren't accepted in the billing form. So until my local game retailer gets more Wii point cards (I can't get them from the local market off base, cause Japanese Wii points don't like to play with American Wii systems) I'm not going to be able to get it.

For example, I started out with the first games, and while I like pokemon from all the generations, I like many more in the first one than I do in the 3rd and fourth one combined. But would someone that started with a later generation prefer those over older generations?

I've also just wondered if there is a general preference for any generation even despite whatever game was started with.

Well, first of all, most of my favorite evolutionary lines are from RBY, which I started with.

However, overall, I'd say my favorite generation has been IV. Putting aside the fact that standard OU battles are just as centralized as they have always been AND how ridiculous GameFreak made Garchomp, there has been a HUGE show of creativity spread across the Shinnoh Dex. I think all the super-awesome evolutions to old, unappreciated pokemon really pushed it over the edge, too.

Seriously, why the HELL did they make pretty much all the BEST TMs a one-shot deal? Grass Knot, Roost, Stealth Rock, Sleep Talk, Explosion, Payback... If it weren't for the fact that I am a total tool and bought a version 1.0 Japanese Pearl when it came out there's no way I'd survive on just ONE of each of those. If I had another DS I'd spend weeks just beating the hell out of Pearl to get more TMs and extra Heatran or something.

Which reminds me, I never got a decent Dialga on my US Diamond ever. Need to borrow a DS :sleepdepriv:

Officially, Canadian EB Games are not participating in the Deoxys event, even though multiple people from multiple sites (serebii, bulbbapedia, GameFAQs, etc) have called and asked.

Personally, I'm just going to wonder down and see if they got it, but just haven't advertised it for some stupid reason.

Actually, I have one acquired in a trade while attending that Toys R Us Mew event last year. Last year? Two years ago? I don't remember.

I ran it through an IV calculator, and I'm pretty sure it was hacked. All 31 IVs except for Attack, and it has moves that Deoxys can't learn at all... yeah, poorly hacked.

First you must have the "MYSTERY GIFT" option at the main menu screen after the title. Select that, pick Receive Gift, then pick Via Wireless, and just download it! Once it's in your file, all you have to do is first HAVE ONE OPEN SPACE IN YOUR PARTY then go to a blue PokeMart building and near the counter is a delivery man who will give you your gift... in this case, Deoxys! If you are not satisfied with the stats / nature of Deoxys, you can always turn it off without saving, reloading the file, and get it again from the delivery man to check on the different stats. The stats are generated right when you get Deoxys, so technically you could do this over and over and legitimately get a shiny Deoxys.

Actually, I've heard reports that the Manaphy, Darkrai and Deoxys distributed via Mystery Gift can never be shiny for some reason. People on Smogon were claiming it to be true, and you can't get much more reliable, so I tend to not doubt them.

"No" seems like a good answer, but then how can I be objective about it?

Then again, it is a game, after all. Maybe it's not "mainstream cool" like Rock Band or Wii casual game #53, but Pokemon's been around a hell of a lot longer.






I'm still trying to decide if stealth rock was a really bad idea or not on the part of the overall game design. I mean, on one hand it helps to keep Gyarados and Salamence from being too powerful, and nothing can escape it's damage, unlike all other type of spikes... but the way it cripples otherwise awesome pokemon like Charizard, Yanmega and Moltres is pretty crazy. I think that if one move can cripple so many pokemon indiscriminately, it shouldn't have been made, or at least made so WIDESPREAD. I mean, everything and its mother learns stealth rock. I mean, think about this: a TON of the best pokemon in the whole game have a double weakness:

Weavile
Garchomp
Dragonite
Swampert
Tyranitar
Forretress
Scizor
Heatran
Heracross
Breloom
Celebi
Gliscor
Gyarados
Salamence
Magnezone

...and yet, in the current metagame, Yanmega is the only double rock weakness among the top 75% of Pokemon. I think that when all those other Pokemon that are perfectly capable of destroying teams can get away with being one-shotted by a moderately weak attack of a certain element, the same should be able to hold true for those weak to rock. But it is not so. All it takes is one move in a battle of, say, 60 or 40 moves or so, and suddenly a large group of pokemon aren't able to work anymore.

If that pokemon that set up stealth rock spent its turn using, say, stone edge instead, they could still one-hit KO those pokemon, just like even weak thunderbolts will topple even the bulkiest of Gyarados. Sure, there's the chance that a pokemon like Lucario might come out and take almost no damage, but the same can be said about the REST of the pokemon world as well.

All my friends play, as we always have this past decade. When D/P came out, Poke'mon actually swept the lower classmen and DS's were everywhere.

Actually, I was initially skeptical of the hype around the game. It was 1998, and all these people were talking about this new game for the Gameboy called Pokémon Red and Blue.

I didn't even bother trying it out until several months later. I was at a friend's house and he had it in his Gameboy (the old brick), and I asked if I could try it out. I spent about ten minutes playing it, and thought it was kind of interesting. I played it a little more and thought it was good enough to maybe buy, someday, when I had the money to buy a new game. I didn't have a job, and I what money I had I got from random gifts, chores and some money my parents gave me. I was still living at home after high school and I had no idea what I wanted to do... So games were a rare treat that only showed p on birthdays and christmas mornings. Life sucked.

So, as some more time passed, I get a job (my first real job); it paid well ($13 an hour), and I had a desk with a computer... that job sucked. But I took he first paycheck I got and bought a brand new Gameboy Color... and Pokémon Red.

That was the start of a initially slightly awkward, but almost entirely wonderful obsession with the series. It also sparked a general interest in RPGs in general, as before, I was not really into them, or any kind of game in general. It sort of opened me up to other games I might have ignored otherwise. I got into Chrono Trigger, the Final Fantasy series... a year or so later, another firend loaned me his giant PS1 and a big box of games. I think I binged on that box for a month straight during the summer. It was fun, but hardly healthy. I plowed through almost every RPG he had. Lunar (and that damn staircase at the end... you have to play the instrument. OK. How? OK, she killed me again. Where is it? It's supposed to be automatic? OK... nope, dead again. Fuck you, GameFAQs, update your guides...), Xenogears, and a lot of others I don't recall offhand. It was a binge, after all.

So, any ways... four generations, a Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, DS, and a DS lite later, here I am. I'm playing a game I enjoy, I'm running a project that shows how much I love the series (even if I don't sing or play any music), and I get to chat it up with people I have never met from around the world.

Yeah... I'd say it's been a good decade for gaming for me.

It was also simpler in the essence that there were only 151 pkmn to catch. I remember when I finally completed my Yellow Dex at 140 hours of play. I'm not sure they can do much to top D/P, if they ever even try to. Just... so much to freakin' do. I mean, 493 pokemon? It's already almost too many. They can't keep adding 100+ new guys a pop forever... And even if they do, I'm not sure I'd want them to.

The way I see it, a lot of the pokemon in D/P were designed to make a lot of the terrible or forgotten ones of times past usable, or at least not as forgotten as they used to be. I mean, Chimecho isn't exactly a top 10 pokemon, but at least now it has an ultra-cute baby pokemon... yeah :< So, like, I think that if and when the next wave rolls out, that they need to spend some time filling in gaps with totally new guys that are all unique and useful. WHAT A TWEEST, I know. I mean, as much as I look forward to things like Pachirisu... cough.

If your pokemon has EVs on it and you're trying to figure out it's IVs, and you DIDN'T keep track of them, the only thing you can do is erase it's EVs with berries until it stops saying "____'s _____ was lowered," etc. That's the only way.

Red and Green came out February 17th, 1996. Yellow came out September 12th, 1998. 2 years, 6 months, 26 days.

Gold and Silver were out November 12th, 1999. Crystal was released December 14th, 2000. 1 year, 27 days.

I swear to god, it's like Gamefreak watches the fan-made battle simulators (like Shoddy, and Netbattle before it) to see what's going on with competitive battling. Then they make changes in the next version or generation to fix what they see as "balance issues".

Except they make sort of half-hearted attempt at it, and you get things like Banette (the only Physical attack oriented Ghost-type) losing it's best two attacks, while Gengar goes from BL/lower OU to full-blown OU because it gets Special powered Shadow Ball again. There were lots of pokes that got screwed over by the Physical/Special shift and sent even lower in the tiers than they were in 3rd gen. Meanwhile, all the OU favorites got moderate to huge bonuses and new moves.

Gamefreak don't care abou' da UU folks.

It must be difficult for them, however, since Pokemon is such a complex game. Also, you have to consider that the hardcore competitive community in Japan is smaller than the one in the USA, so certain trends would be hard to pick up on without a lot of research since the sample in their native tongue is smaller.

Also, the methods of most Japanese players -- even those who are really good -- tend to differ from American players of similar skill.

Hey, there's some new artwork... well, sort of... up on Serebii.net. It shows five silhouettes of "new" pokémon. I say "new", because it's looking like they are alternate forms of Rotom, that freaky, floating, possessed light bulb.

I think the green one will be a Ghost/Grass tractor, the red on will be a Ghost/Fire 1950s style toaster, and the purple one will be a Ghost/Ice refrigerator.

Now, do keep in mind that there is a chance of this being fake. But the source is said to be one that has passed valid info before, and it seems to correspond with recent CoroCoro magazine leaks.[/URL]

From the bottom to the top, I think...

Red toaster
Purple fridge
Green tractor
Orange Castform (I know I know, but the "arms" aren't jaggy like Rotom's)
Blue ???

I've been staring at these things all day, and the red, green and purple ones definitely belong to Rotom. The orange one could be also, but the style is more consistent with Castform. The blue one has the head spike... but honestly, I just can't tell what the fuck it is.

That said, the way I see any Rotom forms going: I think that it's equally as likely that they will be:

Electric/Fire
Electric/Ice
Electric/Grass

as

Fire/Ghost
Ice/Ghost
Grass/Ghost

But I'm leaning towards the Electric ones, currently.

Someone on Smogon thought the blue one might be some kind of washing machine -- being part Water -- and I liked the idea, though the silhouette doesn't seem to suggest such a thing.

Either way... electrified floating tractors ftw!!

EDIT: the big huge large obvious text on top of the image reads, roughly, "these silhouettes, could the Pokemon they belong to be one body?!," or something less wordy but of that same vein. So there's a good chance they all belong to Rotom.

I think the blue one might be some sort of car battery. Look at the "arm" on the right side. It looks like the handle on a set of jumper cables.

As for the left side, I got no idea. It's a mess of lines and color.

There's also the theory that these are going to be the first 5th gen pokes to be revealed. It kind of makes sense; they revealed 2nd gen shortly after Yellow came out, 3rd shortly after Silver, and 4th just after Emerald.

But this is a little too soon. It hasn't even been two years since DP came out.

With the other two alternate forms they've already given us, I think people are going to expect *more* forms by default. It's true, though, that they could be Gen V pokemon... but yeah, I'd rather them not be, since I've hadly exhausted D/P at this point.

Hell, I think PDP is the most fun I've had with the series since I beat Yellow for, like, the 12th time.

Speaking of the Battle Castle, it and the Battle Frontier have a new feature: the Battle Recorder (http://www.serebii.net/platinum/battlerecorder.shtml). You can save each step-by-step attack of a battle for later viewing. You can use it for onlone battles as well, and save a favorite battle where you smashed your opponent's face in.

The WiFi system has a new set of games and features in the WiFi Square (http://www.serebii.net/platinum/wifisquare.shtml). Play games with other people from around the world.

Lastly, you are given a house. That's right, a house (http://www.serebii.net/platinum/resorthouse.shtml). Last I heard, there is no announced NA release date. But if it follows the usual pattern, sometime in Spring 2009.
