Any ways, there's enough people in the DS thread talking about this game (which just came out today in North America) to warrant its own thread.

Exchange your DP Friend Codes here, list some movesets you might want to try out, ask for some advice, anything at all.

First, a poll: which of the three starters did you select, and why? For functionality? For looks? Because you always choose the starter of that type?

When I do get my game (stupid exams...), I'm going with the turtle thing. It will make short work of the first few gyms, and I like the overall stats it has; namely, good defenses and decent attack power.

Got it this morning, havent stopped playing since.

I picked Piplup (water pengiun) because the others were ugly (I actually am a "fire" pokemon trainer, so a big change for me) and I couldn't resist naming it 'PenPen'.

So far I'm on my way to the first gym battle, and am desperately looking for another pokemon besides Bidoof (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bidoof) to offset my normal pokemon. Stupid rat-beaver.

I'm definately willing to trade with anyone, especially if you want to provide me with the other two starters, lol.

I chose the fire type as that's what I chose back when I first played Pokémon and I really don't know much about any of these new ones. I just got my second badge - now maybe my traded pokémon will start to obey me.

I made the mistake of not teaching my Staravia the move where it reduces your opponent's hp to your own. Big mistake >_<

But other than that, it's nice. I have a pretty balanced team, if anyone wants to battle or trade (I have both but am playing diamond), see me on #ClanOCR.

And as far as grass being the best for the first few gyms .. it isn't. It works for the *rock* gym but the second one is a *grass* gym - I used *flying* to beat that.

What good is Steel anyway? I have not noticed it to be effective against anything.

I'm enjoying it so far. I like the new pokemon, and the music is nicer than the older versions, though the graphics are a little tough to get used to. They're not very smooth.

So this game uses the "effort value" system too? I missed it in silver/gold but a guy I know told me about it and it definitely helps building much better Pokemon 0_0

I really loved Gold/Silver the best and I'm afraid that these new games are too much like the GBA ones (though okay games, I never felt like I got the same quality experience I had in Gold)

I must've missed the rod... Oh well, Magikarps are useless anyway. Currently, my team is Prinplup, Budew, Luxio, Kadabra, and Machop. Geodude fills in the 6th spot for Rock Smashing. I'm having way more fun with this one than I did with Emerald. I mean, at least I'm not constantly fighting beavers and blackbirds, whereas Emerald was nothing but fights against racoons and hyenas.

I should probably read the manual to learn about things like effort points...

The only games I've played from the franchise had been the original red and blue games (way back I went for the red while my sister went for the blue, had a strong rivalry since then in other games)

The others within the series I've tried a little bit via friends and emulators but were not enough to get me to buy them as I felt more changes were coming.

I re-iterate, is Diamond/Pearl really worth getting now..? Besides the idea of online battling which is edging me to try getting back into it again.

It's funny as my friends are a mixed bunch, some nerdy some aren't yet I think it had to do with the "cuteness" of the creatures that put off a lot of some older players (not me, or my sister) from trying out the older titles. Serious competitions could have been had if every just tried it out...

DANG IT, I'm not much of a competitive gamer, but this thread makes me want to go super-turbo hardcore mode. But I have questions:

1.) I've always been a water/grass starter type (exception in Silver), since they blaze through the starter gyms like nothing. I'm currently looking at a "Clean Industry" (read: Electric/Steel, heavy hitters, good defense) theme. Any suggestions besides the starter?

2.) What are the main differences in Pearl/Diamond, regarding Pokemon?

3.) What other series is the game compatable with? Will it be able to read Leaf Green/Fire Red?

4.) I heard a mention of a "Pokemon God" in this game. Who dat?

My Luxray (the third form, after Shinx & Luxio) has proven to be quite good for me...once it learns spark it becomes pretty good.

I just beat the Elite Four and have over 140 pokemon seen. Just need a few more to get my National Dex...

Here's a tip: Train hard for Elite Four. Those guys are at higher levels than any of the previous games, and the pokemon have much better movesets than before. I'm quite pleased with their toughness.

They are tied to a particular DS, so if you stick your DP into another DS, you'll wind up with a different friend code. There is a way to transfer a friend code from one DS to another, though.

You do get EV's from EXP Share. What you don't get them from is Rare Candy.

If I ever buy this game (which would require me to get with the times and actually BUY a DS,) I will blindly chose the fire starter because it's what I do. My Charmander didn't give a damn that it was fire-type when I got to Brock back in the day, and whatever the heck fire pokemon they have nowadays is no different.......Heck, I used to walk to school up-hill both ways in the freezing snow, every summer. Don't come complaining to me when your pokemon needs a candy or whatever you kids feed them these days.

Okay, so I'm most likely buying pearl (since my friend has diamond), but I'm still having my doubts about buying it. I loved the original ones, and IMO gold and silver were even better, same awesome quality stuff but with tons more added. But then with ruby and sapphire... I didn't hate them, but I didn't get nearly as obsessed over them, and never ended up finishing my ruby. So, my qeustion is, how do P/D compare? Some of you have said it's like the good old days of pokemon, but would someone who didn't enjoy R/S still really enjoy these? Just wondering about it before I go out and get pearl, so let me know what you guys think ;-)

You shouldn't regret it. There are only two fire pokemon in the regular pokedex so it will be very helpful to you. Plus if you have trouble at the first gym just catch some a water pokemon and crush kill destroy.

Sounds like there's a pretty wide variety of progress so far. I've got about 27 hours logged on my Diamond version so far, give or take, and I just got Dialga. I'm really rushing through the game, so even though I have 7 gym badges, I'm at the point where even wild Pokémon are higher level than 70% of my team. That's okay, though. I can always grind later, against the Elite 4 or something.

Downside is, I don't have a lot in my Pokédex so trading on GTS is not as helpful as I'd like. I don't have any good fire or fighting types in my team. In fact, the only fire-type Pokémon I've caught at all is Ponyta. I chose Piplup as my starter.

I actually haven't done any trading yet, and my LeafGreen is not at college with me, so I can't really finish my team yet.

Also: Katsugi, yeah, I too felt like "Onix" was definitely "Onyx" before. And yeah, "Bidoofus" is pretty accurate. Worthless Pokémon so far as I've seen!

God I want an Eevee, though. I forget how you evolve it into Espeon. I might just go for Jolteon or Flareon, though.

The game itself is so friggin' huge, though. I'm overwhelmed by the range of choices in Pokémon and moves.

Honey works by you going back to the tree you smeared it on a day or so later, and finding a pokemon eating it. Nomral wild battle ensues.

One probable reason why many of us, including myself, remembers Onix's name as "Onyx" instead may have to do with with old shows when it first came out. We've bound to have at least seen one episode involving said subject.

I have a habit of using the close caption, usually for the lulz and some times due to the shitty speakers from the old tv back then. I would still recall the caption spelling it as "Onyx" instead of "Onix". I believe now though it has changed but back then, fun engrish.

Yeah, you do have to get the National Dex first. And I'm not 100% certain of this, but I believe you also have to have the National Dex to trade for non-Sinnoh Pokemon like the three you just mentioned.

It's not that difficult, though - you just have to have seen, not captured, the 150 Pokemon to get it from the Professor. You'll be able to do that by battling the trainers since they have most of them, and Dialga\Palkia's entry can be gotten from an old woman in Celestic Town.

Yes, you do! If anything, traded Pokemon have a HUGE exp boost. It almost makes me feel like I wasting my time leveling up the pokemon I caught myself. Plus the GTS system works really well. If you put up a reasonable offer you will get your Pokemon quickly, even if it seems like you're getting a MUCH better deal. Plus underground and other online aspects are really cool.

I went through the trouble of catching Mesprit (!!), Uxie, Azelf, and Cresselia (!!).

For a game with 4 psychic legendaries, one would hope at least one of them would be worth using.

If Uxie or Cresselia had Azelf's moves, you could argue that it would be quite effective (Big damage would make up for the low attack stat), but alas, I can't see anyone but Azelf being terribly useful, and Azelf doesn't have enough defense to last long enough for its moves to really be as destructive as they promise.

As a side note. Uxie's yawn is still annoying. But still not enough to warrant using it imo.

On a totally unrelated note, Lucario kicks an incredible amount of ass if raised properly. Concentrate on speed and special attack stats, Throw in 2 or 3 TM moves (Psychic! Earthquake! Dark Pulse! Flash Cannon!) and you can not only cover your weaknesses, but come up with total surprises to your foe - A FIGHTING pokemon with a PSYCHIC move!

Like Drack said, I did. I do that as well. If you're aiming to do some serious training with EVs and natures, I think this way is good. If you don't care about EVs and natures, you might as well just train whatever pokemon you have.

E4 is hardest with Infernape, I think. Torterra is easiest.

Lucky egg is a held item that doubles the amount of xp recived. Couple that with exp share and you've got yourself an easy way to build levels.

I'm doing e4 right now with the 88 empleon. Pretty much cake so far. I'm on the pyschic guy. A couple of his pokemon aren't being 1 hitted, so I guess the champ might use up some PP.

I don't max out one monster because the game tends to be kind of easy that way. Keeping your monsters all about the same level is the way to make things interesting. I also try to build a fairly well-rounded team right in the beginning and don't often stop to collect new pokemon until after the elite 4 so that I'm doing less training before I get to the gyms. It really makes the game difficult. I went up against Fantina with pokemon in the mid 20s range and managed to come out barely on top. A wildly intense fight to be sure, with her level 34 Gengar and my level 22 Shieldon duking it out at the very end.

I have to say, I'm loving this game. But I've always enjoyed the Pokemon games. Even Sapphire was alright. I just can't wait to get that National (Shouldn't it be called International?) Dex and get all my old fellas back (Venusaur FTW!).

I was also curious. Does anyone name their pokemon, and what kinds of names do you pick? I didn't start naming them until I picked up Leaf Green. Right now my party consists of a Torterra named Dorito (lv. 35), a Luxray named Sphinx (lv. 35), a Drifblim named Zeppelin (lv. 35), a Whiscash named Nazamu (lv. 34), a Bastiodon named Chateau (lv.35), and a Meditite named Chi (lv. 36; will be a medicham soon) .

Oh yeah, my little sister got a lucky egg, but I think she traded it away. :cry:

Yeah, Golem is definately amazing. It's superior to Cranidos in my opinion because of it's dual type. That's why I'm using a Bastiodon. Being Rock/Steel means he hardly takes any damage at all.

I'm currently leveling up a Ponyta named Spur to use against Candice, the ice gym leader. Unfortunately, I believe Ponyta/Rapidash, and Chimchar/Monferno/Infernape are the only fire pokemon in the Sinnoh region, so you're going to be stuck with your ponyta if you want a fire pokemon. Otherwise, you'll just have to wait till you get the National Dex.

I've noticed that my starter doesn't really take a lot of damage. I haven't taken the time to look up it's weaknesses exactly but I don't often get nailed. Only eletric and fighting seem to really do anything. I supposed grass does too. But I've always had a strong flying move on him so they've never really got the chance to hit me with grass.

Gotta love how drill peck sounds like a machine gun.

Have you guys seen hyper beam yet? Pretty intense.

Yeah. Empoleon, being dual typed with steel, only has three real weaknesses: electric, fighting and ground (grass only does the normal damage since steel types have a resistance to it). He's got some real nice Sp. Defense stats too.

Ponyta is a drag... and it doesn't evolve until the 40s I think. Quite annoying. But you work with what you got.

In all fairness, just about every dragon is duel typed with something weak to ice like flying or ground once its fully evolved, with an exception for kingdra and the legendairies. I still think they're worth the investment though...that maybe just be because I happen to like dragons in general though.

I switched my ponyta out for Lucario...I think I'm going to name him Josey or something weird like that.

The move versatility & the superior stats of a lot of dragon pokemon more than make up for the dual types.

There was a sidequest in Colosseum XD where you got the Lucky Egg without having to hunt down a lucky Chansey. Chances are, there's quite a few players out there that have it. Try making friends with someone who did and cloned it on their Emerald.

(Not me, though. I won't have my hands on a DS and Diamond until I sell back my textbooks to the university.)
