View Full Version : What 3D RPG music do you think is the best?

...Or even good enough to listen to.
You don't have to list one even. I have heard some awesome tracks from the game Sudeki and even Fable has some nice ones to listen to. I usually mix them with some music from OCremix as I play online 3dMMORPGs as their music tends to get repetitive after a while. Music from 2d rpgs seem a bit too dated and doesn't fit how ever.
So what music do you like from any 3d RPG? I'm looking for some ideas for some music to listen to.

Not quite an RPG. :P
But I liked your remix of command and conquer 2 scouting how ever. ;)

A well-timed topic as I had only decided about 2 weeks ago that my all-time favorite soundtrack to ANY game is Star Ocean 3's. Motoi Sakuraba has been kicking my ass ever since Star Ocean 2. When the 3rd one came out I heard that and it was just like the second Star Ocean soundtrack for me in the way that it had tons of freaking good music and a small handfull of tracks that just totally blow me away. I don't know, it's something about his crazy, keyboard-filled modern rock dungeon music combined with freaking dramatic town themes that just has my number. Plus there are his sweet hip hoppy and heavy metally tracks that come out once in a while. I think I've explained myself enough. I hope it generates some conversation. ^_^

Also Motoi Sakuraba's, but I enjoy Tales of Symphonia as my all-time favorite. But FFXII comes in at a close second.

'3D RPG' is such a redundant definition. It's not like the third dimension actually adds much to the genre that 2D can't do.
..Oh, and the inevitable

On the 3d part, I beg to differ. I've put a track from a 2d rpg while playing a 3d one and the depth does not match. Sure it was great for the 2d aspect, but there is a quality that matches the dimension.
As for the "no favorites" thread rule. I'll just reword the first post to avoid that.

Chrono Cross is all time greatest and Baten Kaitos has possibly the most beautiful orchestral VG score ever composed. you can't go wrong with Mitsuda or Motoi Sakuraba.

Oblivion and Morrowind are my favourites.
I'll agree on Oblivion, though I will swear on a stack of Bibles, Korans and Unix manuals that it's got THE EXACT SAME MUSIC as NWN2.
Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

Er.. it doesn't suddenly gives the composer special superhuman abilities. There's no link there.

It's like comparing chip tunes to Halo music. Which one are you going to prefer while playing Halo? Just an example, though I know every one has their own tastes in music.
Just as time progresses, I feel the newer music that comes out is more refined. Refined music for refined games. Even Jun Senoue said he couldn't make the awesome type of music he did recently with 10 year old music mixing technology.
How ever there are some dated composures that you can sit back and chill to and some times there are times they do not fit. Doesn't make them inferior.

Music has nothing to do with wether a game is 3D or not. Many 3D games used sequenced music in the same way as early titles, for example FFX and even Twilight Princess, just as many 2D titles use recorded music.

the only difference is that in the past, composers were limited by how much space could be allocated to sound and music. Even mitsuda talked about how he was constantly limited when composing the Chrono Cross soundtrack. with the technology now, there is a lot more freedom. you can have 100 sound tracks and full orchestra and all that good stuff.
anyway, did i say Chrono Cross already? and Baten Kaitos and Star Ocean TtEoT (is that right?)

well most 2D games are the older ones. i dont see why there should be a difference in the music of 2D or 3D games if they were made in the same time period.

Ding! Exactly the reason why I specified 3d. Or else I would be flooded with old beloved rpgs :(
Of course. I haven't played any retail RPGs since Fable and don't know what's out there really.
GeckoYamori

You're still getting flooded with old ones. Mid-to-late 90's RPGs without (Sometimes even with) redbook music sounds primitive by today's standards.

Oh and uh.....
I don't know. I don' t play a lot of RPGs. My favorite RPG tunes are the old ones. 3-D RPGs try to be all Hans Zimmer-like and they suck because its just bland orchestra shit. Stuff like Chrono Trigger, FF8, FF7, EarthBound, OgreBattle, Iluusion of Gaia; that's the real goods.
Halo's soundtrack is boring. So is Oblivion's. Even Soul Calibur is kind of weak. They focus too much on composition and sound quality and not enough on "is this actually interesting to hear?". Fable's soundtrack sucks the most. DANNY ELFMAN CAN'T WRITE VGM! Stick to movies!

Halo's has some good tracks. So does Fable. But depends on your taste in music.
But as for the bland orchestra music, I'd have to agree. I listened to Morrowinds (Oblivion's predecessor) and it was just that. I didn't want to listen to any more of the tracks afterwards. May appeal to some, but not me either.
Sudeki's music was pretty interesting (for it's time and still is surprisingly), only problem is so few tracks, thus sending me on my search for more interesting rpg music with my expectations bar set kind of high. :/

Well if you're looking for greatRPG music you'd be stupid to not want to hear 2D RPG music since that's some of the best ever. Why limit yourself to just RPGs? Rygar for PS2 has an awesome soundtrack played by the Moscow International Symphony and Shadow of the Colossus has one of the best soundtracks in any game ever.

Just do a search for Lament of the Highborne, The Burning Legion (music), and Hyjal's closing (music). Pretty loving epic.

Not to sound like a jerk, but what does the Saturn have to do with the game's musical quality?
