So it's been a little over a year or so since the last Philly meetup. Who's up for another one?

DATE: June 16th - Noon
MEETUP SPOT: In front of city hall, facing towards the clothespin

ATTENDEES (DEFINITE)
zircon

Dyne
Darkesword
Atma
Bustatunez
Merk w/ friend
Faduger
Kutrayn (w/ girlfriend)
Bahamut
Jiggles McPuff

ATTENDEES (POSSIBLE)

* Sequence of events. This will be solidified over the next few days, but here's the general plan:

1. Meet up @ clothespin (noon) - center city. Wait a bit for potential stragglers.
2. Head over to the convention center area, meet up with Darkesword/Atma, grab some lunch, get day passes/tokens as necessary (for public transport). We'll probably be here until 2-3.
3. South Street?
4. Arrive at the apartment (via subway) by 5 or so. BBQ prep + dinner.
5. General hanging out, video games.
6. Bubble House for more dessert & beverages - this is where Jill works.

So, we're NOT going to be going to the apartment first, because it's actually over 20 blocks away from the meetup point. This means that if you're bringing anything, you should travel light.

* Video games. Multiple people have suggested bringing some systems/games, but remember, there's no dropoff point for them. Also since the apartment is small, we'll still have a big group when we arrive there for dinner, and we'll be outside at the grills anyway, so there won't really be a chance to make use of them at that point. Only after dinner.

* Parking/transportation. There is only street parking near me (non-metered) but I can't guarantee you'll be able to find anything. There are two garages relatively close, but I don't know exactly when they close, or their rates (they're not terribly expensive though). Center city garages are expensive, so the other options are probably best if you're driving. Regional rail, Amtrak, NJ Transit, SEPTA, and Greyhound/Chinatown bus will all take you into easily accessed areas.

If you are coming in and need directions on how to get to the meetup spot post NOW... I'll help you out.

* Overnight guests. The only person staying with me and Jill is Wes (Bahamut) - we REALLY REALLY REALLY do not have space for anyone else. If you absolutely need a place to stay overnight then you should start asking other people in the thread. It's not that we don't want to put up other people... we simply can't. The entire apartment consists of a combined living/sleeping space and a little kitchen, that's it.

* Dinner Money. Jill and I just got back from the grocery store where we bought a ton of food + drinks. Everyone coming for the BBQ will be expected to chip in; the final amount per person will depend on exactly how many people we have at that point, but it will be between $5-10. Cash only! So be sure to bring small bills. ;)

* Make note of my cell... 215-531-0798. Call if you're having problems, need last-minute directions, etc.

Yeah I'll definitely try to be at Wizard World again this year, most likely the Saturday of that weekend. I'm going with friends from my old job and school, but it'd be cool to hang out for a while.

What? I say "I'm in" and nobody else responds? What're you afraid of? C'mon guys, join in on the fun! How often do any of us get an opportunity like this? Also, how many times do we get to be in town for Wizards World?????

Oh, and by the by...BUMP.

Hey, you go to Drexel? Awesome! What major are you? We should hang out sometime. :)

Edit: Also, do you have a car? It would be sweet if you could gimme a hand with picking up 1,000 CDs from discmakers in New Jersey. It's ~7 miles away, I'll cover gas and give you a free copy of the album too.

I think Andy still doesn't know what date he prefers for a Philly meetup. I'm up for whatever, but I'd like to do more than just visit one thing for most of the day. Also, I'd probably need someone to pick me up from Chinatown in Philly if there is a meetup.

We plan on flying to florida on the 13th and driving north toward New york maybe a day or two later and actually Stopping for my friend Phil to fill up on Philly cheese steaks!!. If you've been to Jim's the only other place I'd say is Tony Luke's, that and any little known street vendor. Pat and Geno's are like the Madden of cheesesteaks, just because they're popular doesn't mean they're the best.

As for movie theaters, I'd only been to the Riverview Plaza and The Bridge, I'd definitely recommend the latter over the former.

I hope I'm not going to be tour guide again, I don't even live there anymore.

bustatunez and I will be working on an itinerary. A few things we can do:

* Visit the place Jill works and get some drinks (The Bubble House - serves bubble tea and other stuff)
* Check the food court at the gallery, since it's cheap and affordable
* BBQ in the couryard @ my apartment complex
* Art Museum?

Merk

I realize that itinerary is not set in stone. Regardless, would we be doing all that on foot, or using SEPTA? If we would be using SEPTA, may I suggest our meeting place be near where one could get tokens/tickets. [insert joke about hard to find clothespin].

And put me on the list, jerk.
Also, I'd be bringing a friend, and while he hasn't posted here in years, he has ormgas on something like 24/7, and joined before I did (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/member.php?u=625)

Hey y'all, so here's my idea -

We can congregate at city hall, it's super easy to find if you weren't here last time (I can go over directions later). So far it's looking like we'd start off at 12 noon, wait half an hour or so for people to show up, then head off.

Our first stop could be the gallery, which is kinda like an underground mall sorta thing. We'd just walk there, and along the way we can get SEPTA (our subway/bus system) tokens/daypasses from the transit store. If hungry ---> Eat at food court. We can also meet up with the Wizard World folks, it's just around the corner at the convention center. Maybe you guys could catch lunch with us?

After that we can take the subway down to Old City, which is kind of like the historical district and stuff. Supposedly the oldest continually-inhabited area in the country, they apparently have yearly reenactments and open houses etc. It's a fun area to explore, and we can walk around to see stuff like the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin's house, etc.

There's also a Dave & Busters arcade over on 325 Columbus, it's not terribly far of a walk north from Old City.

And from there, we can walk+bus over to South Street. It's kind of the fun / touristy center of Philly, and that's where we'll be forcefeeding you guys cheesesteaks and water ice. There's tons of cool shops there, especially if you're into weird bizarre morally-questionable stuff (like leather! :-)). There's also a big poster shop and other fun stuff. I reiterate, leather!

Any other ideas? And does everyone know how to get to City Hall?

Merk
06-03-2007, 03:39 PM
City Hall is pretty big, you should probably specify where in city hall we should meet.

bustatunez
06-03-2007, 07:26 PM
Ah true! Maybe we could keep it simple and meet at the same place as last time, on the western side near 15th and Market street (opposite the giant clothespin).

Or, we can be cool and meet in the center, and pretend like it's a gateway to four different worlds in the center of the universe!!!

Merk

Not the giant clothespin, Zircon will never find it.

Seriously though the Western side would probably be better. Even though the center would be easier to find for those unfamiliar with Philadelphia, there would most likely be too much foot traffic that we'd be clogging.

bustatunezesez'ss's plan seems to take up most of the day as it is. The only way I (and my guest) could stay really late is if we could somehow spend the night in Philly since I have a 2hr+ drive back home.

bustatunez
06-09-2007, 07:03 AM
Oh we can/should totally take some of the stuff out, I was just listing possibilities so we don't end up aimlessly standing around wondering what to do like last time ;)

But for example, the arcade is in the opposite direction from everything, and we could just go straight over to south street and eat lunch there instead of eating at the gallery's food court. We'd still go down there to get tokens (and visit comic folks?) though, but yeah we can totally x out the arcade and even olde city.

If we really want some arcade-ish funtimez, one of y'all can bring your Wii and some games, I can bring my gamebridge and some PS2 stuff, and we can play on two screens at once over at Andy's (his TV and his comp). Any Wii-having volunteers?

And who needs to stay somewhere overnight?

Faduger

My friend and I will need a place to stay. We will mainly live in his car for two weeks...So we will most likely need a shower or two aswell. It would greatly be appreciated. I also have a request if we are going to play video games, that smash brothers melee or halo be present. I'll do my best to represent the west coast!

also, If anyone is down for a poker game, I'm not complaining;).

Oh wow, another Philly meetup? Hopefully I can make this one unlike missing last year's. I recently broke it off with my girlfriend who goes to Drexel, but I know the area well enough to meet up with you guys from the start. I prolly won't be able to stay late due to parents liking a tight leash, but it should be fun. Also, I read a few of the earlier pages and Jill works at Bubble House? I've been a there a couple times and it's pretty awesome.

zircon

Jill & I can't accomodate more than one person overnight... we live in a studio apartment with one room and really have no extra pillows, futons, sheets (etc). It's barely big enough for two people, much less four.

Anyone else here in the area willing to put up some OCR peeps?

Kutrayn

A meetup! In my town? Dude!

But it's on the week-end... I almost always work week-ends. I don't know, but I'm definately interested in coming. I live just off-campus from Temple and I work in the city, so I may show up for an couple hours (I either start or end at 3 on week-ends), and I may be able to offer up a room for maybe two people? I have plenty of room, but limited blankets/beds (but plenty of floor...).

Put me in for a maybe. Also, I suggest we grab gelatos for dessert at a store on ( I think) 13 and Samson street (between walnut and chesnut). It's just down the street from The convention center. Heck maybe you guys can visit me at subway (food) on wlanut street (11 & 12).

Enough rambling. I'm not even sure I can make it. However, even if I don't go, I may still be able to offer a roof for a night (at least until 8:30 AM). So feel free to contact me with any details at 215-630-1988. Jordan Goldberg.

Which side is the clothespin thingy? North, south, east, west?

Edit: Also:
a) I have a Wii-mote and nunchuck (or two?), and a classic controller if I'm there for the gaming.
b) I wish my girlfriend would pick up the phone so I could tell her about this. She'll start to get involved on the forums here soon, but not just yet. btw, I know she has work essentially all day for this. She can't come.
c) IMPORTANT: If anyone intends on taking me up on the offer for a bed, let me know asap. My phone receives texts, if that helps. This is so I may start planning the details... and cleaning up certain messes. Just let me know.

Hey guys we really need a realistic count of how many people will be there for the BBQ (dinner). Once we figure that out we'll probably ask for everyone to chip in a little bit for the meat/buns/rolls, since it will likely cost at least $50 to get everything.

My plan has changed alittle bit. We may not leave florida until friday evening, which would halt us from making iit to an early type of meet up. We would still like to come to the bbq if thats ok, and of course we still might need a place to stay, hopefully still Jordans. If this is ok with you guys(zircon, Jordan)is it possible to message me your adresses? You never know if we will make it on time though, our plans aren't made of metamorphic stone. thanks.

OK, just some stuff to clarify, and a few things we need to figure out still...

* Sequence of events. We need to hash out the specific plan (and alternatives, if it's raining) - but the general idea is this:

1. Meet up @ clothespin (noon) - center city. Wait for potential stragglers.

So.. we're NOT going to be going to the apartment first, because it's actually over 20 blocks away from the meetup point.

Call if you're having problems, need last-minute directions, etc.

zircon
06-13-2007, 12:08 AM
Getting to my apartment is not terribly difficult (and you can always call even if you got stuck). The entrance is on 3600 Powelton Avenue; there is a subway stop on 34th & Market, which is about 4 blocks away (go west two blocks to 36th, north until you get to the entrance 2-3 blocks).

However, unless you're going to be REALLY late, if you arrive at 1-3pm or so we'll probably still be around the center city area.

No worries, I get paid friday. :D

I may decide to come down early just so I can guarantee a parking space close by. I'd rather hoof it to City Hall than park near it. And besides, if we need some emergency provisions, I can always run to a store if my car's within walking distance.

Anyways, anything you might need, feel free to ask me, I'll do my best.

Housing (and room for two additional guests [girlfriend not staying the night]): Check.
Transportation: Check

If I'm forgetting anything or causing problems, feel free to call/text my cell (a previous post).

Jordan how many people can you take in?

Also are we having lunch at South Street? It'd be cool to go there so we can have an actual philly experience this time instead of just walking around aimlessly :-)

AAAARRGGHH!!! I don't know if I'll make it. I need to convince my boss, but as of right now I work from 4-9:30... My girlfriend will show only if I do, it seems.

I can accomodate 2-3 people. If really needed I can manage 2 more on the floor, but I already have minimal blankets and pillows... Thus, At best I can accomodate 3 more people if someone brings sheets and/or pillows (I need to take inventory).

Faduger, I'm about to PM my address. The offer remains regardless of whether I show, but I will re-iterate that I kinda have to kick everyone out by 8:30 because I have work at nine. It's better than nothing.

If you've checked the weather forecast for Philadelphia, you'll see that there are isolated t-storms predicted tomorrow starting at 4PM - 30% chance. This may change by tomorrow, but we're making some backup plans just in case. If it seems like rain is likely, we're probably going to cut out south street and head to the apartment after lunch in center city. Jill and I got a tarp and some rope which we'll have ready in case we need it for outside.

HOPEFULLY we won't need to use it...

By 4 I would think we would have already been at, or currently on, South Street, in which case we could seek shelter in one of its many zany stores.

I'm definitely coming by the next Philly meetup, whenever that is. The trip's shorter than I thought.

Baltimore was longer than I thought. I dunno why I didn't make that connection: Baltimore = Maryland = close to D.C. Eep.

I'll be on my way in the morning; as usual, I hope I make it on time. I also hope the BBQ doesn't run too late, 'cause I'm afraid I can only spare that day, and will have to head home that night. I'll call if there are any difficulties.

It is official. I, and my girlfriend, WILL be there. From Noon until the end! No work at all!

As far as predicting rain, I've learned a neat yet accurate trick using the leaves of certain types of trees. If the points of the leaves are pointing up, it is, indeed, going to rain. Unfortunately, I don't know how many of these trees are in center city. (btw, I've seen it work on several occasions, I just don't know if its foolproof)

I'm posting at zircon & pixietricks' place, and the meetup was great as to be expected. First we met up at City Hall (and for some strange reason everyone was late) - after waiting an hour, we met up with Darkesword, his brother, and Atma and headed to the Gallery for lunch. After, we then went down to South Street and looked around the shops and stopped around Penn's Landing, where we then decided to head back to here for the bbq. Much food & fullness later, we went to get bubble tea at the Bubble House, pixietricks' work place and then said a heartfelt goodbye  .

Here's a gem from #ocremix though!

What's with the "We Love You" balloon?

So originally, Jill saw someone selling balloons right along the street since it was Drexel's Commencement on that same day, so we all paid for the balloon to randomly give to someone at the meetup, but then it just ended up becoming the meetup balloon, full with cheesy love you effects and traveling with us everywhere until it made a full circle here at Jill & Andy's place.

Yeah, and on a breezy day, no one knew how to hold the damn thing without it constantly bumping into people and in danger of being ripped by trees, stoops and lampposts. I had it hands-free, looped around the waist and floating from my front side; that's how it's done. But that was probably no fun to a lot of you.

I don't know about you, but I intentionally was hitting people with the balloon  .

And I didn't realize that the bus from Philly to NYC was so bad...when I was there at 8:30 or so, there was a hugeass line already for the 9 pm bus. At least they brought out 2 buses though, so I came into the city at the time I expected...but still too late for a train home, yay late night Metro North  .

I'll comment. Four way chess took way too long. And I was the first to die. It was still fun. I can't believe I lasted as long as I did.

I love the "dead worm in a puddle" song. That poor worm. He's only got this sad song to remember him by.

The Bubble Tea place was cool. Me and Kutrayn are going to have to go back there and take my sister. She loves tea.

I'm somewhat surprised myself. I've never seen four-way chess before, and I figure that maybe it might inspire the OCR Chess League to find a way to put that together. Still, you know how long the games would be?

By the way, we haven't heard from Jiggles or Meg yet.

By the way, we haven't heard from Jiggles or Meg yet.

Our game toook, what? Maybe three or four hours? But that's because we kept the game failry casual and Jose was kind enough to allow us to eat during his ::achem:: brief turns.

If other chess league were to start up four-way chess, they would probably incorporate the timer system (which I personally hate). Logically, with the same time limit, It would be maybe twice as long as a normal timed game (but who knows for sure?). Otherwise, there's all sorts of new things to affect them.

~Do they play a free-for-all game or teams?
~Do they play free-for-all but eliminate competition, as if on teams?
~How do they work the check mate? Either all peices under a taken King are removed from play, all the peices are unable to move but able to be taken, or the remaining peices are given to the taker of the King (expanding their forces).
~Other things I don't remember.

This game really does take a duel and turn it into a war. Dichotomies arise in strategy. "I'm Gold. Silver just put Black into checkmate and will take Black's King on the next turn. Unless I decide to take Silver's Queen on my turn. But if I take Silver's Queen, Black will escape because I can't take him with my Bishop." What's more valuble now? A King or a Queen?

Actually, the ability to sacrifice yourself to shorten or lengthen a game also makes cheating an issue.

...It's definately a fun game when played casually.
