View Full Version : The Jack Thompson LOL thread

So pretty soon Wendy's will be providing Wii toys in their kid's meal, and Jack Thompson will have none of this.
Good ol' Jack Thompson doesn't like the fact that the Wii is going to have a game called Manhunt 2. He calls it a "Murder Simulator".
Manhunt 2 is what Thompson calls a “murder simulator”
Manhunt 2 will appear on the Wii (among other systems)
Wendy’s is promoting the Wii, therefore;
Wendy’s is promoting Manhunt 2, which promotes murder
http://gamepolitics.com/2007/05/08/hey-jack-you-want-fries-with-that/
"A dear friend of mine worked for Wendy’s and with Dave Thomas closely for years. From that I know that Dave Thomas never would have tolerated the use of Wendy’s good name to promote Nintendo’s Wii, not with this game available on the Wii platform."
Now, he's not suing either company(Nintendo or Wendy's), but I guess he just wants to get the word out there that since the Wii will be providing Manhunt 2 which promotes murder, so since Wendy's is promoting Nintendo, Wendy's is also promoting murder.

I guess you guys can't see it, but the message is very clear. It's quite obvious that the 2 puzzles are brainwashing the kids to become just like Jigsaw from the Saw movies. The baseball stadium is telling kids to beat up people with baseball bats. It may not look like it, but the disc shooter is exactly like a glock. The Mario on a turtle is pretty self-explanatory, and the Excite Truck vehicle trains kids how to run over people on the streets.

Does Jack Thompson have a DVD player in his house? A TV? A bookshelf? All of these things have horrible media available for them. Kids shouldn't buy Manhunt, just like they shouldn't buy snuff films and bestiality porn. But it's out there, so it's up to parents to do their job. But anyway,

I hope Jack Thompson doesn't call for a boycott, I love Wendy's frosties too much. :(
Apparently Jack isn't much of a Burger King fan otherwise he would've sued them for promoting the murder simulator GTAIV since Burger King sold Xbox 360 games featuring the King.

lol...Jack can't touch Rockstar with any lawsuits after Take-Two finally stepped up against him in court. This so-called "settlement" between Jack and Take-Two is because Jack backed down like a coward. What an ass.
Unfortunately, he can still speak freely of how games are "bad" for kids...which is what he's stupidly doing now. I mean...WTF with the whole "Wii/Manhunt 2" thing...this is just sad...it would be even sadder if Nintendo abides to Jack's parading and cancels the Wii version...
If you ask me...Thompson is acting just like a kid, getting more attention than needed...

If the sequel will be anything like the original, than I think I'll be passing.
Manhunt WAS a little over the top. I think we can all agree on that.
This is old. Jack Thompson is being Jack Thompson, a self-righteous pompous asshole, with nothing better to do than to attempt to ruin everyone else's fun because nobody bought him an Atari or a Commodore when he was a wee little Jackie boy. He needs to grow the f*** up, and get off people's backs. Games are not the problem, people like him, bleeding heart liberals, and people who don't see the forest for the trees are the problem.
They seem to think that everything else is to blame, but you don't dare blame the parents of the child, or adult. No, no, you musn't ever blame the parents, that would be cruel. It's not the parents fault they weren't there for little Timmy's school play. It's not the parents fault that little Suzy was abused by an adult. Oh no! That would be the easy fix for the situation.
Yeah... You know what. I want five minutes with Jack Thompson. Just five minutes. All I want to do is talk to the man, and get an understanding of what the hell it is he think he's trying to prove. I'd also like to know why the hell he doesn't get what the last judge told him. Personally, I hope the next judge he sits before hits him with contempt, and sends him to jail. Then he can re-enact that episode of The Boondocks where the lawyer is so afraid to go to prison because he doesn't want to get raped.
Yeah, I think that might wake his ass up to what's REALLY wrong with the world.

It was, but an enjoyable over-the-top. Still, not something I'd replay, really. The Wii though, as it does with all first/third person shooters, offers a unique (console) experience, I'd imagine.

No, I would not.
If you buy a game in which the goal is to kill in horrible ways, you have to expect that people are gonna die in horrible ways in the game. Don't want to see people die? Don't buy the game.
Its that simple. No one is forcing someone to play violent videogames. Parents are just idiots who fail to do actual parenting by not showing any interest in what their kids are doing. Every game I got as a kid, my parents knew what it was. When I rented games, they would ask me what the game was and would look at me playing, even just for 5 minutes. Even today, when I buy a new game, they like to see it in action (although my parents, in their 50s, have developped a love for videogames that was rather surprising at first.)
Jack Thompson should be suing parents who fail to do their jobs as parents. You don't sue car manufacturers for making cars that go faster than 100 kph when some dies due to a car crash at 150kph. You see the person as irresponsible.

How is this relevant to anything I said? I simply said that Manhunt was over the top, or did you feel that you needed to take the tried and true RD stance yet again?
I think Manhunt is over the top, and that's all. I didn't go out and buy it. A friend of mine who was with me at the Blockbuster rented it. I just saw him play it, and while it was interesting for awhile, the shock factor gave out soon later and I never touched it since.

GP doesn't always print their sources, but they make it pretty clear that Jack Thompson himself is one of their best sources for informing them of his actions. He e-mails GP regularly. The possible legal action against Wendy's was probably e-mailed to GP.

Hah, I guess I did kind of fall into my own fallacy. But I think I could've made it more clear. Let's rephrase that:

What do you mean? It's not the first console game to get an AO. I don't think Jack Thompson had anything to do with its rating. San Andreas was temporarily rated AO. That's the only other console game I know of to get that rating. Other AO games are only on the PC to my knowledge.

The only other non PC or Mac game is some sexual game for the cdi. Anyway, it seems that Manhunt is being forced to be toned down:

Wrong. Check the post above yours. Sony and Nintendo are refusing to publish the game so long as it remains rated AO, and an appeal would be unlikely to faze the ESRB, so Rockstar will either have to change the game or can it. There's no way it'll be able to keep its original release date (July 10).

Okay, lets play some more half-ass mini-game comp or go on a picnic with Mary Poppins.
I normally laugh at all of these violent games (especially with RockStar's cheap approach to recycling things for most of their games), but it looks like they had good plans for this game and that it effectively utilizes the abilities of the Wii controller.

Hey man, no offense really. I agree with you to some degree - The violence is getting a bit old- My real point is that (from what I've heard) is that the game is going to be really cool and stand out amongst Wii games because it actually implements the controls in unique (and very violent) ways. So yeah, I'm just ruffling your feathers while I have the chance.
And for your other comment - I definitely wouldn't want to play a rape game, but I wouldn't mind something like the Dead or Alive on the Wii console.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Gamers protest when the ESRB doesn't do their job properly, but then when they mark a clearly AO games as such they go apeshit (http://www.petitiononline.com/4manhunt/petition.html) anyway. It's not censorship, people. MS, Sony, and Nintendo don't want AO games on their systems.
Because the public would try and sue them to smithereens if they did allow AO games on their system (hell, people have tried to do it for some M games, even), they have to protect their own asses.

The claim has not been verified by the Florida Bar, which did not respond to our request for comment.
As GP has previously reported, Thompson is currently embroiled in a pair of federal lawsuits against the Bar.
The Bar has moved to hold a disciplinary hearing against Thompson based on several complaints about the anti-game attorney’s professional conduct, including video game cases involving Grand Theft Auto and Bully. A scheduled June 25th hearing was postponed."

But thinking about the situation, Jack Thompson just let his own son purchase an M-rated game... haha That's bad parenting there Jack Thompson.

Yeah, most of the time it's kind of funny, and sometimes he shocks himself, but one day, that fucking monkey is going to zap you when you aren't looking. When we're all laughing at his jackassery, he'll somehow manage to actually pull off an actual victory, and it will be a bad one. Only be keeping an eye on the lawyer chimp can we prevent that.
Besides, if someone cool-headed and rational took over, that person could get a lot more of the whole "regulate video games 'cause they're dangerous and I don't understand how any of it works" agenda done than Jacko ever could.
We need him to be out there making an ass of himself, so people outside of the situation associate his antics with his agenda. They will see a foolish old man doing foolish things.

Agreed -- the biggest threat he causes is that someone legitimate gets on board. Jack right now is just seen as an idiot...a fresh new face that isn't an obvious ambulance chaser would be much more worrisome.

I view Jack Thompson like I would view a chimpanzee with a tazer. Yeah, most of the time it's kind of funny, and sometimes he shocks himself, but one day, that fucking monkey is going to zap you when you aren't looking. When we're all laughing at his jackassery, he'll somehow manage to actually pull off an actual victory, and it will be a bad one.
Heh....a chimp with a tazer.
That has made my day.
I think he also has a "zOMG!!1!!1oneone!! TEH CHILDRENS!!1!11!!!" banner somewhere. Whenever he brings that out, then all the other sheeple go "oooOOOOOooooo!!!!!1! Teh Childrens!!11!!1!" and will do pretty much anything.
Whatever happened to parenting your children? Oh right, "It Takes A Village" nowadays.
But then again, this is par for the course when you have people like Thompson (or those with equivalent mental capacity) in positions of power/influence/access to TV cameras. If you need more proof, see Mr. Series of Tubes himself.

Don't forget. He's been using his own son in "stings" against stores, trying to "prove" that kids can go in and buy M-rated games(BioShock and Halo 3).
Of course, he's giving his kid the money, and the permission, to go buy the games. So there's honestly nothing at all wrong with it.

No, you're missing the point. His son is going into a store and buying the game with no adult supervision in sight. The cashier is selling M-rated game to a minor without asking for any kind of age verification. The cashier has no idea if permission was given or where the money came from. That's the point Thompson is trying to prove; that retailers don't really care that much about carding kids for video games. In my experience (working as a cashier at Target many many years ago), such a thing was not far from the truth back in the day. Might be different now.
Real issue is, look at it from a statistics point of view. Sample size of 1? Kind of a worthless "sting" if you ask me. If he had hundreds of kids all over the country doing secret shopper type stuff, it'd be a bit more substantial.

Either way, it's ridiculous. Selling an M-rated game to 17&- is not illegal. It's just "Recommended" that they not purchase or play them. Most stores try to keep with that for consumer image, but nothing is really there requiring them to.

It's a guideline and nothing more. MPAA and ESRB are unable to make them into laws, because that would break some sort of constitutional right or something.
However, the individual stores have the right to refuse, as part of their terms of service.

I agree that underage kids should not be buying Violent materal (games , movies, etc.), but I have been a strong believer in Parents should control what their kids play. I understand why Jack did what he did, but the guy as gone fucking mad.
Most stores I go to (I live in IL) do card younger kids, or will tell them they are not old enough. Actually one time a parent walked into a gamestop with her son. Her son looked about the age of 10-12. He wanted Leisure Suit Larry, Magna Cum Laude and the gamestop employee said "oh that game is not for kids. It's very perverse". The mother didn't have a clue about games but thanked the gemtleman for helping her out. So it just goes to show you that not every employee ignores policies.

Sort of, except you lose all your weapons, most of your exp, and there's a chance that, depending on what choices you made during cut-scenes, that you'll be spawned with some sort of polymorphic status effect. I play video games, I know things.
