Hi all!

My CME UF8 just arrived today
http://www.cme-pro.com/products-list/product-uf.html

Its an 88key controller with weighted keys and hammer action and all that jazz.
Heres the thing though, i was under the impression that usb midi had no latency, but im getting around the same latency as i did with my yamaha dgx202 when i was using regular old midi in/out cables.

if someone can give me any info on how exactly midi connections work and shiz, and maybe how different driver types cause different latency, id much appreciated it.

id really like to get this working so i can hook it up to akoustik piano or The grand 2 or something like that (anyone have any suggestions?) i just really want to have an ultra realistic piano bank to play my controller with.

much thanks

What program are you using with the keyboard?

First off: you'll never have zero latency, if for no other reason than it takes time for the signal to travel through the USB cable and into your PC, be processed, and be output or recorded. USB Midi has some minute amount of latency, although it's definitely faster compared to a MIDI cable and is likely unnoticeable.

Your problem probably has to do with the latency of your sound card or some other Windows problem. I use FL Studio (switching to Cubase tonight when I have time to install the software) and an Axiom 61, and I found that probably one in three times that I started FL Studio, the latency on the keyboard would spike to the point where I couldn't use it for recording; probably only around 30 ms, up from 5, but I find that anything beyond 10 ms throws me for playing real-time.

So quite possibly, this is the problem. I'd make sure your sound card has the latest drivers and supports ASIO, that your DAW is using ASIO instead of DirectSound, and try starting/restarting your DAW a few times to see if it's just a fluke. You could also try using a fairly light-weight VSTi outside your DAW, if you have one; I found that I never had latency issues (as long as my sound card was set up) using something like Native Instruments B4-II in standalone mode.

USB anything has latency. The reason USB is so portable is that it's a lot like a Winmodem - it uses the CPU for far more than similar devices use. USB TV tuners (for example) have the same drawback, that's why they're not recommended for video capture on slower machines that can handle it fine with a PCI tuner.

Every time I tried to use MIDI on my PC I always had horrible latency. I bought a USB midi dongle for use on my laptop and the issue followed. I installed ASIO4ALL and that fixed what ever issue I had. I really don't understand why I had latency, but that fixed it pretty easily. Might want to try that out.
