Yoshi's Island 'Crystalline Caverns'
If you know McVaffe, then you know what you're getting here - well-programmed drums, crisp samples, great piano work, and though it's maybe a tad on the repetative side (*gasp! He criticized McV! Can he DO that!?*), it's so good that you don't mind the repetition! If you don't know McVaffe, then I recommend you listen to his stuff IMMEDIATELY, and this remix would be a great place to start!

Further proof that a mix can break the 5-minute plateau and still be too short -- because I didn't want this to ever end. Absolutely gorgeous.

Nice work, as always, by McVaffe. I didn't recognize where it was from, but it was nice nonetheless.

Everything flowed smoothly from start to end. Nothing stands out, but that leaves everything to blend together carefully. I thought the original version of this song was okay, even though it got on my nerves after being stuck in a cave level for a few minutes. This is by far an improvement.

I don't have a McVaffe remix I don't like. I even love all of his original work - he has inspired me to go out and start trying to create some of my own remixes. I also have to agree on this new remix - the piano could have been turned into a solo, but the remix is a lot smoother without it. I think he wanted to keep the piece more mellow than some of his others (keep with the idea of a cavern perhaps?). Another 5-star remix in any case.

I find it hard to comment on McVaffe's remix's because all i ever say is awesome! Just like now, this remix is awesome! I hated Yoshi, but I like this remix. Now im forced to liking something about Yoshi because of McVaffee.. damn you!

Not the most articulate of mixes, however, worth the download, and defintely worth putting on your next mix CD.

Sir Vaffe is a genius.
I've never really been a huge fan of some--a lot of McVaffe's remixes. They were often too bland, though still well crafted.
I think McVaffe has an excellent idea here. Nice, mellow, and the tune is recognizable. Definately some great work here. Very nice composition. Nothing here really falls our of place. Incredibly well crafted, and very well made. Highly recommended for anyone looking for some more mellow tracks.

First off, I'll say that ambient trance-y songs are my favorite to listen to. This remix conveys a wonderful atmosphere, and you can almost feel the chilly wind coming through the massive cavern you've been stuck in for nearly 10 minutes now. You'd smack Yoshi, but this chill tune is playing in your head, and you just want to relax. McV truly invented the time warp with this song. You listen to it, and then it's over. Five minutes worth of chilling in seemingly a minute's length of time. I only typed up to the previous sentence of this review in the time I listened to that song. This is great stuff, well arranged, impeccable production. Must listen. I command you. Become a follower of McV! Not really, but this comes HIGHLY recommended.

Wow! Another great remix by MvVaffe! Again, the repetition is barely noticeable, and the pacing is great throughout. Great sound quality and nothing that hurts the ears.. Which is a HUGE PLUS.
HOWEVER, This remix sounds almost too different from the original cave music... That's the biggest gripe I have about this remix. It doesn't really feel like a remix at all. Anyways, the music itself is great! Good job!

McV keeps up a rediculious level of quality. Make more please
I've never played this game and I've never heard this tune before, but this mp3 is probably gonna be moved from my "game remixes" folder to one of my electronic music folders! It's so great, it can totally stand by itself without the listener knowing the original song. I think that's what a remix is about.
Just about everything has been said about this song. My favorite part is the stuttered piano and the whole section around 2:20. Very cool. Very chill. Very good stuff. I'm going to go check out his original stuff now.

the unbiased reviewer gives this selection a 9.5/10.
i was curious how someone could take the cave theme of yoshi's island and turn it into a good remix. some songs are harder to turn into remixes than others. this surprised me with its level of deph. its nice to here something other than techno but its good that the piano was accompanied by drums. this remix serves its justice.

(*gasp! He criticized McV! Can he DO that!?*
NO! YOU CAN'T!
This is going to be another classic in my WMP MP3 collection. Joining the ranks of DJP and FG's mix of Starfox - Clan McCloud, DJP's Pachelbel's Gannon, and... several others that i've forgotten, because WMP is so cheap, it plays the same 7 "random" songs over and over, and never gets to the good ones. *sigh*... i gotta get a GOOD MP3 player...
Very nice stuff from McVaffe

Probably one of the best remixes on the site. Very nice, I like it a lot.

Download this now!
In a nutshell.
The repetition doesn't bother me, and I hardly notice it because I use WMP to repeat all the songs I play. I quite like the piano and drums, and the original tune is still recognizable although I admit, it took me a couple listens to pick it out from the composed parts. The ambience is well-done here, and I'm a big fan of ambience pieces. This is definitely worth waiting for the download time.

I love this site. I really do. PRAISE OCR! *brutally sacrifices a thousand "hit" bands for continued patronage* Without it, I could never have heard such mind blowingly good music. Its almost orgasmic. I wish I could loop it so it would last forever, but then I wouldn't get to hear ProtoVaffe, which is just as good. I like most of the OCRs, but Vaffe always manage to blow me away. Why, I could go on for pages and pages about how goooooo....
*unable to finish reply because he's fallen into a pleasant haze listening to this*

McV remixed my favorite theme from my favorite SNES platform game, so I'm automatically a little biased toward it. I love the trip-hop drum feel to it with that beautiful piano sound that defines him. I was letting one of my friends listen to this mix and he said, "This sounds like Linkin Park", and we got into this big discussion of how Linkin Park is really just videogame music given lyrics. I didn't notice at first, but this remix does make me wonder if my friend wasn't right.

Certainly (one of) the most amazing remixes I've ever heard come off of OCR like this... I mean, I never expected the cavern theme from SMW2 to turn into such, what may be, an extremely beautiful piece. Truly astounding. Blew me away.
Thanks a million for this one, McVaffe. MAJOR props. ^_^

I guess I'm committing heresy for saying this, but I wasn't as sold on this song the first time I listened to it and was thiiiisss close to deleting it. But after not being able to sleep and having the tune stuck in my head, I just had to give it a few more listens and am now sold on it. While it's not a 5 Star song like his 'Cammy's London Drizzle', 'IceCapped', or 'Liquid Mario' (of course, very little is), this is clearly a great tune. It doesn't immediately capture attention like much of McVaffe's other productions, but is very emotional and emotion-evoking nonetheless. It won't make you want to get up and dance, but is solid nonetheless.

How does he do it? G-O-D!!!!
Reminds me of the Vega Ballad he made, that too was stunning.
I would love McVaffe to work on Chrono Cross...OOOOH! What he could do with the Water Dragon Isle theme! oooh...that track is called people opressed with life right?

I won't waste space with my empty words. I just got the Yoshi's Island ROM a few days ago (my cartridge busted), and as I played it, I remembered how much I hated this song. As a matter of fact, it was my least favorite video game song.
McVaffe, I just don't understand. It's literally my favorite remix of any song, ever. How in the hell, I just don't believe it. Congratulations.
-Dennis-
I can't believe it's taken me so long to review this. A while ago, probably a a week or two before this song was posted, I was talking to McVaffe on AIM when he sends me a link to a "secret new remix." That remix turned out to be Crystalline Caverns. I was reluctant to download it, having never played Yoshi's Island, but the mere fact that McVaffe himself sent me the link made me do it. As a music lover, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. This song is amazing. This is the epitome of Overclocked ReMix. I can use a whole lot of adjectives to describe this, but none of them would come close to how this really is. Long story short: download this song right now - you will not regret it.

Hey all, I'm a new member here...but I've been frequently visiting it for who knows how long...I'm what i consider an AVID gamer (no, a FREAK, no, A MANIAC when it comes to gaming) and i must say, this ReMix is outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't say it enough....i have had it playing for like 30 times in a row...it doesn't get old to me...i love games and to hear the old ones get played again (Journey to Silius, Metroid, etc.) its great, this ReMix is unbelievable to me...the way the piano...goes in the beginning, the drums, the beat, i remember this song on Yoshi's island, sometimes i would just go down a pipe and stay there, listening to the music of the underground, now i don't have to...this ReMix is GREAT!

I don't want to have to so outwardly say this, but this is probably McVaffe's worst work I've downloaded. BUT IT'S STILL ABOVE AVERAGE. The piano et al. are excellent, but after the first minute and a half, I wanted the song to go further. It never does. I'm sorry, you can't turn a 30 second loop into a 5 minute song without more variation no matter who you are. There is a coda of some sorts, but it occurs only half way through the song, then the thing more or less loops entirely. Well, not quite, but it seems like it unless you're listening intently. Nevertheless, I'm just nitpicking because I am once again a jerk. 5/8
I thought it was great. I've rated all my hundreds and hundreds of OverClocked songs I have in my iTunes (I'm a Mac user), and it's one of my 5-star-rated ones. Many games from older systems have songs that are repetitive. The song from Yoshi's Island was repetitive, and don't think McVaffe can be hit for making the remix also repetitive. It's too gorgeous to even matter. 5/5

I'm like Homer in that one Simpsons episode where they meet Mel Gibson (if I recall correctly). The only guy strong enough to tell the truth. =P
Well, this remix IS beautiful, yes, but it's also on the repetitive side... in my opinion, BIG time. The samples used are fantastic, and the drum programming is very neat (a bit of glitch-inspired stuff every now and then, so it seems). I think this remix just needed something else. It doesn't sound quite enough like the original for me, and I'm going to keep griping about it. =P Nah, not really. I really like this remix, there's just...certain "things" about it that keep me from loving it.
7.3/10 (Heck, still way above average. But with McV, you'd expect better)

This remix just makes me want to sit back and float away. It just seems to flow together really, really well. My favorite parts are at 2:00 and 3:45 - 4:20.
Great job. It gets a second class recommendation from me.
beautiful. I always liked the theme from the caverns in Yoshi. the piano in this thing is awesome. it just takes you to relax land. yeah, this one should have been like this in the game. the chill-outed beat and, of course, the magnificent piano taking the melody onwards are great. repetition? yeah, but even like that, its cool, and it makes it good to repeat. 'sides thare are variations to it that are also greatly introduced in the song. you really doesnt feel it like its five minutes long, you just want more. its over and its like "dang. over yet?"
great stuff, and a great arrangement. get it NOW.

Wow! 8O I've been a big fan of McV for a while now, but this song is MAGIC. I recognized this song, no problem- this was one of the songs my neighbor used to play on his TV when we were little kids to TORTURE me. No joke, I'd leave the room whenever this dumb song came on. I absolutely HATED the original song. That's why it is so amazing that I listen to this remix and LOVE it! 8O I'd give this song at least a 9 out of 10, based solely on my personal preferences! Do you realize how amazing that is, considering the fact that I absolutely abhor the original song!? The orignal song gave me headaches- this remix CURES those headaches. Wow. All I can say is that even more so than before, I am a big believer in the magic of McVaffe. :)

This is one of the most beautiful arrangements I've ever heard. No matter how often I listen to it, the emotional power of the acoustic piano still frightens me.
Crystalline Caverns has a peerless trip-hoppish beat that melds unbelievably well with the dark soundscape proportioned by McVaffe.
Undeniably one of the best remixes I've ever heard.

I swear this is the best mix on the site
but the 1:55 and 3:41 markers need to be extended! argh!! Or repeated one more time! This song is just so strong, heavy, loud, deep! The drums are great along with the strings in the background, but the piano makes up everything in this song. I listen to this song on repeat all day. The chorus really needs to be longer though!! The piano in the beginning is great, all of the accompaniment piano is great, the whole arrangment in the song is great, actually everythings great!
I need to hear more remixes of this song! The one at vgmix sucks sorry to say.
This is definatly my number one favourite mix on the site!!

Hey, I'm sorta new here so I may be a little... bad at doing reviewing and whatnot. Anyways, I REALLY love this one. One of my favs on this site. Everything in it just fits so well together. Man, reading through the comments made me nostalgic for CD's for some reason.
Either way this is a damn amazing mix. Basically, this mix takes my 3 of my favorite instruments, and then combines them all into one glorious mix of an already glorious source. Probably my favorite from McVaffe, but then again I don't think I've heard all his stuff yet. I'm over half way there, though.

Huh. I listened to that after you said it, and it does kinda sound like it. Of course, McVaffe's is better anyway. I was not fond of the caverns theme at all in SMW2 when I first heard it, but this is a masterpiece. I'd expect nothing less from McVaffe
Pretty nice, if a bit unremarkable. It fills a solid role as thought provoking background music, but never really steps into the forefront. Part of the luxury afforded by doing so many ReMixes is that you can definitely try some new things, and as a whole, this track is good, but I definitely prefer more melody-centric works.
Great for doing homework or staring out the window on a rainy day though. :-)

This is, simply put, one of McVaffe's best tracks; and considering his prolific contribution to OCR, that means something. Indeed, there is so much wonderful interpretation going on here. Not necessarily in the melodic sense, but the sound scape is incredible. A beautiful acoustic piano line holds the piece together while overlaid with subtle strings and some awesome experimental percussion. Love those chords at 2:15 and the subsequent synth and panning effects. At 3:30 we get the beginnings of the climax of the piece. Carefully programmed percussion helps to reinforce this section, and by 4:30 we get a nice cool down to finish off the mix.
