Chrono Cross 'Time's New Scar'

That's right folks - A piano piece played live by an individual. A talented one for that matter ^^ There are only a few (most not even noticable) problems due to the fact that it was played live. Definitely recommended to anyone a fan of piano pieces, and definitely those fans of the Chrono series in general.

Highly recommended. A more sedate take on a great theme, with plenty of expansion. This song makes an excellent counterpoint to FFmusic Dj's "TimeScars."

Seriously, this is one of my favorite songs out of the entire Chrono series, and I appreciate any coverage of it. Kudos to gutzalpus on an excellent initial submission.

This is good stuff. Is there somewhere I could get the piano music for this? Does gutzalpus give out his e-mail address? Someone let me know if there's someone I could ask.

YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THIS. If you like Time's Scar, get it. If you like piano, get it. What am I saying, get it anyway! This is one of the BEST remixes I have ever heard, from the sheer beauty of the arrangement and the emotive playing. Very well done to gutzapulus. Think Fantasy Reborn, only better.

This song brings tears to my eyes. It's that good.

Ahh....the piano player I wish I could be. This is the best piano arrangement I have heard from this site and any other source of vgmusic. I can hear those minor glitches, yes....but the emotional response the whole piece demands makes them so minute you cannot possibly gripe about them. :D I listened to the track 3 times in a row after I got it, and I'm working on the 4th now.
Anyway....it's been said several times and I'll say it again....GET IT!!!

That's all....

At first listen, I didn't think this was live. I thought it was an arrangement like most of the piano songs on this site. But well played, nonetheless. The song is not as complex as Spekkosaurus's miraculous romp through the trial song from Chrono Trigger, but it is still extremely well-executed. I love the Chrono Cross soundtrack. I love piano. Doesn't take a rocket scientist or djp to figure that one out. Great song, although the piano sounds a bit MIDI-ish. Just a bit. Recommended highly.

I was amazed by how well performed this was, even though the 'glitches' or so to speak, could've been avoided. But hey, there's no such thing as perfection after all. REALLY nice work though, it has me in awe.

I must applaud Gutzalpus on this amazing piece of Piano work....
He/she has taken a well known piece from a well known game, and done it justice, if he/she messed it up, I'm sure he/she would hear about it....:), but he hasn't, and I'm glad.....
The CC soundtrack is probably one of my favorites, and by doing Time Scars, he/she has established himself or herself, as a great pianist, and maybe we'll see more arrangements from him/her sometime soon....

There is but a single word for the piece: Beautiful.

Time's Scar was an amazing piece on its own, but I must say that this piano mix of is absolutely top notch. There isn't much else I can say as I am not musically inclined to describe the style and quality of play. However, it was a beautiful, smooth, and delightful.

Well played indeed.

Unfortunately, there is no score for this arrangement...I basically took the original score, set it down in front of me, and used it as the basis for an improvisation, which is this song. I'm horrible at actually sitting down and writing out sheet music (or putting it into the computer for that matter) so most of my stuff tends to be improvised.

Also, thanks to all for the wonderful comments regarding my arrangement. They're all greatly appreciated.

I am quite the big fan of pieces that maintain just enough of the original melody but still go on to be very unique. You are a very good piano player; knowing that you improvised this is damn incredible. Thanks for the great song--I look forward to your next release with a whole lot of eagerness :)

Great ending also, by the way.

Okay, so this is absolutely gorgeous. At first I was disappointed when it didn't go into the fast part of Time's Scar, but that didn't last long. In fact, considering the feel of the piece, I am far more pleased at the amazing improvisation that runs away with the melody than the original score could have hoped to make me. A fabulous remix, and one of my favorites on this site, easy.

Kick ass, gutzalpus.

Can you at least post the chord progression? I believe the first chord is E minor 9th, but I think it's detuned one half-step lower, so it might be E flat minor 9th. Can you clarify?

This piece reminded me how far I have yet to go as a pianist. I can play some tricky pieces, but I certainly cannot yet compose or improvise anything like this piece. The sheer amount of musical variation upon this one theme totally blew me away. I can certainly hear how improv makes more sense than direct composition, especially considering the very "human" feel to the rhythm and tone, but this improv sounds as if created by a master composer.

...sigh...have to keep practicing...

...Oh, yeah. Thanks for such an incredible remix, gutzalpus! Keep it up!:o

Uhm maybe I'm missing something, but this sounded very planned out beforehand, and I still have a hard time buying that this is "live". The sound quality sounds like it's a MIDI piano track. The only thing that supports this is the drag on tempo at the end of some phrases. I'm not saying this is a bad song, it's just not "the greatest" as everyone claims. Still highly recommended.

Daniel Ocean
12-13-2002, 08:38 PM
I'm sure he knew the basic structure of the song before he started, but there's some obvious (and inordinately kickass) improv going on there.

OK, QUICK POLL: how many people picked up their respective instruments and started practicing after hearing this piece?

EDIT: OK, I've figured out the arpeggio accompaniment of the intro. It's played on a guitar, but it's ok for any instrument.

I'll post it if there are any takers. Well? WELL?

It's beautiful. There's nothing like a beautifully-performed piano piece. This epitomizes OC Piano Remixes and really raises the bar for anyone thinking of doing a piano-oriented piece. Melodic, somber, uplifting, the transitions are extreme, yet flawless.

Definitely one of the best.

I find it very interesting that someone thinks this recording sounds like midi. If anyone knows of a midi device/keyboard that sounds this much like a real piano, please let me know where to find it :)

(this was recorded on a young chang grand piano)

Also, I did obviously know what the structure was going to be before doing it...however, if I were to record it again it definitely would sound very different each time

I would be happy to have it transcribed, and would love a copy of the music if this actually happens.

I do have a few other remixes. However, the performances are somewhat flawed in a couple of places, so I have been hesitant to submit them to the OC Remix site. You can download them here if interested - and please let me know what you think. My favorite is the Radical Dreamers one. Despite one hugely glaring error in the performance I think it is the most creative and the most passionate of all my remixes.

Ok people!! Lets try this again. I have 2 new professional music transcribers who I will contact to transcribe this song.

Please contact me if you want a piece of this song transcribed. It will costs rough $40-50 i think. Please bare in mind, this is a tough song to play and these are professional transcribers. Anyone willing to split the cost and get a copy? The transcription will take some time after I collect the money. Maybe 2 weeks or so.

Please contact me at premiumg (at) yahoo.com

Please note, I have referecnes on ebay and heatware (hardware trading reference place). I do not rip people off. I have very good references. I am not trying to make a profit. I really enjoy this song and would love to play this on my own piano. I want to find people who enjoy this song equally and will be willing to chip in for it. Please contact me.

Thanks.

P.S. I am also gathering people for the Megaman 2 remix, Doctor Wily's Wedding. That is a great song as well and it looks like that transcription will happen very soon. Please check out my post on that song's thread if you enjoy that song too.

EDIT (11/12): Ok, the transcription is going very well. I have in my hands, the first 2 and a half pages of the song transcribed and i can say its note perfect. The song is not as difficult as i thought to play.

If you are interested in getting in on this transribtion, please email me at premiumg(at)yahoo.com.

I am paying ~$50-$60 for this song and I request if you want a copy of this transciption to pay $5 for the whole song. I think this is a small and reasonable amount. $5 will get you the first 2.5 pages now and the whole thing when its done.

Thanks,
Dan

EDIT (11/16): bump for anyone who likes this song... again, please join in so you can get the sheet music for it! I dont want to have to pay the entire thing myself!!!

if you contact me about it, i'll give you the first 2.5 pages for free. then if you like it, i'll forward you the rest for the $5 chip in. I think its very reasonable since the whole song is costing me > $60 as of right now!

EDIT (11/21): the 2.5 page same can be found here....

email me if you want the rest:

Wow.. Amazing piano piece. One of the first I heard, and definitely one of my favorites. But I just gotta know..

Who the heck is gutzalpus?

No email address, no handle in the forums or on AIM, no website... I've searched Google and vgmix, but I can't find any other trace of music from him anywhere. The only other thing I was able to find was on Chrono Compendium, where there was a piano rendition of Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World, another amazing piece. Though I could swear that I remember seeing "gutzalpus" on a vgmix page, I looked and looked and couldn't find anything.

If anyone has more stuff from gutzalpus, could you please direct me to it? Anything at all will be greatly appreciated.

Im not sure why everyone is regarding this remix so highly. Let me explain:

The arrangement is ok but not amazing. The beginning is basically the two themes played just like the originals. 1:51 or so introduces some playing around with the chords and eventually the melody, but it is still pretty straightforward. The chords aren't that different than the original. From then until about 4 minutes, the first original's theme is used but there isn't too much of a large deviation from it. There are little embellishes and bits of new things introduced but nothing that is very striking. I actually find this section pretty boring, because quite plainly there isn't a lot of interesting things happening. The chords and melody are used and repeated, without much variety. At 4:00 the lost fragments theme is played again with a slight difference in chord changes I believe, and then the first melody is used again. This time with a build towards a climax that is fairly nice and shows lots of emotion. Then it ends on a chord that sort of leaves the listener hanging.

Other issues are the playing isn't always that steady or consistent, but it's still pretty good. The piano itself sounds slightly out of tune and rather old, but suffices. Voicing for the most part is fine.

Ok, so my point is that the arrangement of this song isn't that spectacular. The mood is good, but it doesn't make this piece as good as many are claiming it to be. Perhaps the reason lots of people like it so much is because the source material has wonderful melodies. Chrono Cross has a beautiful soundtrack. Anyways...this song isn't too bad, but its not that great.

That's an insult to Klutz work. This is not worth mentioning in the same breath as klutz if you ask me

Some of the parts is barely adequate, but for the most it's sloppy pianoplaying with simple rythm patterns. I would'nt call this a piano piece, it's more a piano tune without the rest of the band.

Sure it's ok from an amateur perspective, but my standards for piano pieces are much higher than this.

Btw the original is a masterpiece :)

I gave it another listen, and my opinion remains unchanged. We all have different opinions on what good music is (thankfully), and here are a few examples why I don't share your excitement over this song:

0:53 there's unsatisfying rythm play. 1:40 has a "pause", sounds like he's searching for the right notes for the chord (no, it doesn't sound like an artistic pause). This repeats several times later in the song. 2:17 has sloppy playing (hits a wrong note actually), 2:40 just sounds weird, 2:54 sloppy playing, 3:32 sloppy playing, 3:53 VERY sloppy playing, 4:06 sloppy playing, 4:55 sound rather cheesy to me.

This is just my opinion though :)

The pause at 1:40 was an artistic pause. You might not agree with the artistry there, but it was nonetheless.

As to some of your other references -- 0:53 "unsatisfying," 2:40 "sounds weird," and 4:55 "sound rather cheesy," that's obviously a matter of opinion and I can't take issue with that.

I agree that there are periods of sloppy playing, and you have a good ear for catching most of these. I don't feel that these small errors detract from the enjoyment of the piece, though. None of them are glaring, certainly.

The reason I never "officially" released any of my other recordings is because they all have glaring errors which in my opinion DO detract from the enjoyment of the piece. I am hoping to get back in the studio to rerecord them eventually, though. (I've been saying "eventually" for at least 2 years now.)[/i]

Finally put the other tracks back online. Think of these as "beta" versions, since there are definitely some more serious flaws than exist in the Time's New Scar track. The plan is eventually to re-record them, if I ever get around to it.

This is just beautiful. I never cease to be amazed by these piano mixes. I just don't know how you just sit down at the piano and it just comes to you?! Ya, I have said that way too many times and I guess I can just throw my hands up and say that your skill as a pianist is unparalleled with your creativity that allows you to encompass any possible melody that can connect so well with the original track. Keep these coming. Enough said.

I would kill fifteen men with my bare hands to get a copy of this sheet music. This is honestly my favorite song of...ever. Can anyone please upload a copy of the sheet music? I wouldn't ask, but all the other links in this topic are already down, so, yeah.

Do it, or fifteen innocent men will die. Do you want that on your conscience? I didn't think so.

*sigh* I've listened to this song for over two years. Through good times and bad. It's my most played on iTunes, it really is a beautiful piece.

And now, after years of work at honing my piano skills, I think I'm ready to give the sheet music a try. If anyone has the sheet music, I'd love them. I'm a huge fan of gutzalpus and all his music. It'd be awesome to be able to play this beautiful piece on piano myself.

Can anyone who has received the sheet music upload it to a more stable place? Or even rapidshare it again, as it seems to have gotten some more attention, it should stay alive for a little while.

Ouberion's Judgment

1. Initial Thoughts

The main reason I started arranging and orchestrating music, not to mention composing my own, was to follow exactly the same thought process that OverClocked follows: That of ensuring Video Game music is seen as something more than just another paycheck for someone. I remember having to do everything by piano, sitting back and playing Wave or MP3 files of music off the internet repeatedly to get all the notes I needed. Now, with the advent of places like the vgmusic.com archives, people in our position have a much wider array of resources.

But beyond that, the greatest thing people could have ever created in regards to Video Game music are the sheet music books. And thus, we come back to the reason I said everything above: Chrono Cross' sheet music book. It was the first of the many that adorn my shelves in my music workroom. And Time's Scar was the first piece I ever learned to play on the piano from ear, so seeing it on paper made it seem just that more emotional. I knew there would be a way to show my support for such great music. And here, this piano version of Time's Scar is so emotional, you don't need the visuals to go along with it.

2. Treatise

I told myself when I started listening to this piece that by seeing the words "A piano piece played by a live individual" that I would hold back from giving the "the pianist messed up here" or "that was the wrong note and chord" comments. I know how hard it is to perform something anyone has written, even if it is in the studio. Hard not being a description of technical difficulty, but rather a description of the attempt to recapture the original level of emotional attachment from when the composer/arranger was first writing the piece. Even a composer/arranger will play the same piece differently each time, even if only slightly.

I have no clue as to how this piece came about (sometimes I'll just have the melody, and play around underneath it with chordal progressions and other fun things to try) and how much of this may have been improvised on-site. But here goes.

The intro is executed very nicely. Not much is going on, obviously, but I do like the fact that the piano playing is what I like to describe as being "A la Pianist-isimmo". I see this piece as the normal "softly - powerful - softly" arrangement, but it works so well here that most people don't notice what's going on musically.

The central section, with the clashing notes, around the 2:00 mark, hits the mark exactly. I would have like to hear more of the lower notes, somewhere in the octave leading up to middle C. Keeping the bass where it's at, or even slightly more powerful (note, powerful...not louder) would help out. But when you couple the bass line with the clashing notes up high, I don't think those notes work just staying up high. A little centralization in that octave would tie the high with the low. Separating your hands by two to three octaves without saying "hey, there's still something here in between" is not something I normally do, so although it works here, it's just that I'm not used to it.

As to the syncopation in the second half of the piece, that's something I do quite often, even if it is in broken chords. It works great here, not so much because of how it is executed, but moreso how it connects two drastically different sections of the piece: the powerful clashing note section and melody to the ending of the piece. And what most people don't realize is that you can have soft syncopation. And that is exactly what is heard here.

3. Judgment

Staying away from the performance like I said I would, I give this piece a 9.5. I don't want to give it a ten, because there are some notes in there which could have been altered to make the piece better, although I would need to review the score itself to give specific definition to my statement. This would be a great "bonus" track to the Thieves of Fate soundtrack, even though it's from Chrono Cross and not Radical Dreamers. But I'll say this: If I were to ever compile a Chrono Cross album for OCRemix, this track would definitely make the list.

Oh wow...this is just beautiful. Absolutely amazing. Marvelous job. You've taken one of my favorite video game tunes and played it on one of my favorite instruments and the result is just favoriteishness all around.

I don't recognize the remixer at all, but what a really nice rendition of the theme. The ending is a little anti-climactic, but the tone and performance is very nuanced, and the transitions between sections are seamless and accomplished. Nice balance between hands and chords and arpeggios, and the brief original interlude was very well done. Really pleasant work, I enjoyed it a lot. :-)
