Unless you mean using a stylus/pen in your right hand is difficult, which I understand, but again, unless they let you control movement with ABXY (Like they did in MP:H) then again, you don't really have a choice...

As for the astigmatism, I also have slight astigmatism and where contacts, and I can see the 3D and play for about an hour on full before my eyes get a little tired.

It's the stylus issue.

Imagine a drunken monkey flailing around helplessly.

That's my right hand.

...Or just imagine a dude that has a hard time coordinating fine movements with his right hand.

The monkey part is funnier though.

can't you be ambidextrous like me?

FireSlash 03-30-2011 03:57 PM

Got a 3ds. Enjoying the little AR games and such so far. SSF:HD is still in shipping :\

Matt E. Waldman 03-30-2011 04:41 PM

Alrighty, I've added everyone's friend codes.

Oh, I picked up Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition the other day. I do have to say, it's a really good port. The gameplay translates over pretty much perfectly, as well.

In addition to being born missing half of my cerebellum, the entire right side of my body was broken when I was about 18 months old and apparently there was some kind of nerve damage that didn't repair well.

So no, I can't be. :(

Playing DS games on the 3DS looks pretty gross either way you do it. Good thing I wasn't planning on selling my triforce DS Lite.

The 3DS content seems pretty nice, though. I felt fine playing for somewhere around 30-45 minutes, but my eyes got a little strained afterwards. Now I'm afraid if I play for hours and then turn it off, my eyes will suddenly burst with no warning.

only the first hour is straining your eyes (i got the same problem) but after a while you'll get used to it. Adjust the slider around 50% to begin.

I realized I could've been clearer. I never felt strained while playing; I turned it off after 30-45 minutes. The eye strain came after I was no longer looking at the screen.

Whatever the right terms are, DS games seem to be resized to fit the 3DS resolution. You can either play with the game resized and slightly blurry or play on an uncomfortably tiny screen.

Not like they're unplayable...they just don't look as nice either way. My friend doesn't even notice, but I think it's ugly. :<

it was clear for me. i got that strain too AFTER playing, probably your eyes adjusting from the 3DS to reality. I don't feel that anymore now that i'm used to it.

Wait, is there a way to turn off upscaling? I have very good eyes, I don't mind things being small.

Dhsu 03-30-2011 07:06 PM

Hold Start or Select while starting the game.

DarkeSword 03-30-2011 07:12 PM

I just found how to do it on another site. Thank you.

This is great, it's just like the pixel density of the Gameboy Advance Micro (my favorite GBA). Kind of makes me wish they'd released a DS Micro. :)

Soma 03-30-2011 09:17 PM

I've been playing Radiant Historia on the 3DS, and to me it looks fine. I never did play it on a regular DS though. This, Pokemon and Okamiden will likely be the last DS games I play.

Has anyone noticed that there isn't a wrist strap attachment on the 3DS? The original DS came with that thumb pad wrist strap, and every subsequent system had a place for a wrist strap, why not the 3DS? it kinda bums me out.

Schwaltzvald 03-30-2011 10:06 PM

Any body try out Nyko's 3DS Battery? Looks like it could assuage many 3DS owners of short battery life gaming.

Here's the meaty part

Quote:

I decided to torture the thing until it tapped out. I put in Rayman 3D, a relatively graphically intense 3D game, and played that the entirety of the testing period. There was almost no time spent on menus or browsing my friends list; it was all play time. I turned the brightness all the way up and made sure I was connected to the Internet. The 3D slider was likewise set to maximum with power save mode disabled. I disconnected the headphones and made sure the speakers were cranking out sound for maximum battery drain. I took five-minute breaks here and there to rest my eyes. This is the absolute worst-case scenario when it comes to 3DS battery life, and has very little relation to real-world use cases.

With the stock battery, you'd be lucky to get three hours out of these conditions.

The Nyko battery lasted five hours and forty minutes. Well done! This was accomplished under punishing conditions; if you turn off WiFi, use headphones, turn power save mode on, and dial down the brightness a few notches, you suddenly have a system that's ready for long flights or marathon playing sessions. For $20 this is a great addition to your system, even if the black coloring looks pretty goofy on the aquamarine 3DS. The loss of the charging cradle is annoying, but the additional play time makes it worthwhile.
Makes me want to reconsider getting one, or at least when and if my old DSLite bites the dust...

Turtle 03-31-2011 12:13 AM

That's pretty bulky, though. Seems like it's just trading one portability factor for another.

http://crenk.com/nintendo-3ds-sells-...f-japan-sales/

This site gives a number and says they sold over 400 000 units in Japan. The Destructoid article isn't clear if they're referring to Japanese or US sales.

The Destructoid article doesn't even claim a source, but this is Destructoid we're talking about. While the launch is successful, I'll wait for at least a year or more to REALLY call it a success. After all, Sony claimed a successful launch for the PS3, and it still hasn't come close to the Wii, PS2's, or 360's total LIFETIME sales...

Yeah, those are consoles, but I still rest my case.

Added all from the front page.

Soma 04-02-2011 02:25 AM

How is everyone feeling about their 3DS purchase? Honestly, I'm very conflicted, at least it has potential. I don't really like the 3D at all, I like it best in SFIV, but it's hard to focus on in Pilot Wings and typically gives me a headache. All of the included "games" are cool, and are a welcome change for a system launch.

So, streetpass, both systems have to be in sleep mode with their wifi switches on? Does it affect streetpass when connected to a wifi hotspot? My brother's 3DS sat on top of mine for about 20 minutes before streetpass tag kicked in. Though, he was connected to his wifi network and I wasn't.

Also, I don't really see the point in the friends list. You cannot communicate with eachother, and you can't trade 3d photos, and as far as I know you cannot trade mii's without using QR codes. Speaking of QR codes, why the hell do you have to save it to the SD card and then put the card into another device for it to work?

Invader_Quirk 04-02-2011 03:55 AM

Love the 3D. LOVE IT. It's never come close to giving me a headache and enhances everything so much. I messed around with 3D pictures for hours today. They're really exciting to me-- the next step in photography. I haven't experienced Streetpass yet but I plan to walk around downtown tomorrow so I can play Find Mii. I hope it works better than it did for you, Soma. The friends list is a little disappointing. I guess it's best for seeing what your friends are playing so you can join them online, but not being able to send messages... you could even do that on the Wii.

Anyway, at least with the 3DS they're planning on frequent updates, so maybe things will improve. I don't regret my purchase, though. If I hated 3D (which I don't get... do you walk around with one eye closed as well?)I might regret it.

i collected two mii on the street the other day, and i'm pretty sure (from the location i picked them it didn't take 20 min.)

About pilotwings, yes the 3D is beautiful nut after a while trying to perform quick turn and himmelman to catch balloon and ring i start to see double too, but i tend to move the 3DS so i'm probably out of focus. My other game is asphalt and like ridge racer i found the same problem, the 3D is average at best when you look at the screen but when you play you tend to focus on the center screen where the road is and i don't feeel the 3D effect.

i hope for update too. for exchanging data and maybe the possibility to connect to a nintendo online account or something and upload photo there.

Groovemaster303 04-02-2011 11:05 AM

Didn't know what to expect really but i've been quite impressed so far. SSFIV is superb as many have said. I also have Splinter Cell which is pretty good, the graphics are more in line with the ps2 version than xbox but the game is fun with big levels and the touch pad works very well im my opinion. No multiplayer but the campaign mode lasts a good 8-10 hours.

I don't use 3D at all, it gives me a headache and to be honest i'd rather extend my battery life a little by keeping it off.
Overall though it seems to be a decent little system with tons of potential., I like the analog slider which worked excellent in Splinter Cell i might add. The battery life may be a concern but compared to the Psp go and even the iphone/itouch it's not that bad.

How do you get both images? When I looked on the SD card, the jpg just had one of the angles.

Hale-Bopp 04-03-2011 08:22 PM

You want to view the mpo file, not the single jpg. Both left and right jpg files sit inside the mpo file. The best and easiest way that I've found to view mpo files is with a freeware program called StereoPhoto Maker which can be found here: http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/

Using that, you can mess around with your 3D photos and save as a stereo jpg in many formats ranging from cross-eyed view to stereo anaglyph. It's a pretty nifty program.

I invite anyone to come and school me in SSFIV3D, cause I'm really bad at it.

Soma 04-04-2011 08:23 PM

I've been playing Pilot Wings more, It's not as bad as I thought. There's little depth beyond collecting things in free mode and 3 starring the main levels, but it's a blast, and the controls are pretty spot on. I absolutely hate the rocket belt. I could do with a more proper Pilot Wings sequel, with birdman and sky diving. A better setting would help as well, I have to assume Pilot Wings being out at launch has a lot to do with reusing the Island from Wii Sports Resort. I'd like to see what Nintendo could do with some more time.

Have you guys messed with QR codes much? They're sorta novel. There are sites out there with tons of QR codes for cool Mii's. It's kind of a clever replacement for the mii create shop channel or whatever it was called on the wii.
