That's the spirit!

I'm working on a remix/recomposition of the requiem of spirit warp song from Ocarina of Time. This is my third warp song remix and this time I'm going in a little bit different direction. It's still a work in progress and so far there's no ending. I'm open to any comments/suggestions. I'm using cakewalk 6 with synths. If you want to hear my previous remixes, you can find them on YouTube by searching "The Toader."

My song is on sound cloud at http://soundcloud.com/thetoader/that...rit-demo-zelda
Thanks,

The Toader

I know this is a dead thread, but I was wondering if I could get some feedback. I just finally got around to making the song full length.

Awwwww whaaaaaat? Is that Kakariko Village that snuck in and took over before I could even realize what was going on? Nicely done, man. I like this.

The simplicity really is this remix's strength. All very bold sounds, and they all work well.

I tried adding in some other themes and motifs. If you listen carefully, you can hear the marimba play a bit of Bolero of Fire.

I'v done the same in my other remixes as well.

I'm glad you like it. Any suggestions to make it even better?

Not much I can say other than upgrade the samples. That'll change balances up, so I'll stop there for now.

Ohai Toader didn't see you there :P

I really like the laid-back-ness of the track, but it feel a little bit empty. I think that better samples might help that, though. Also, that piano that comes in near the end kind of overpowers everything else, so I'd turn it down just a bit :P

Thanks for the replies.
I'll fix the piano.

I'm using Cakewalk 6 - how do I upgrade the samples? I'm fairly new to using synth programs, and I'm not quite sure what 'upgrading the samples' even means.

Thanks

Well, basically gather new, better sounding ones and replace your old ones. Listen to what kind of sound you actually want and try to determine which sounds better, and choose the better one.

I could echo my previous post. It still applies.

Sound design is a bit tricky, but it's the process of finding and modifying, or making sounds of a particular type, and fitting those together in a way that sounds good. The backbone of the sound design here might work, but there's stuff like the bass drum and some of the more melodic instruments that feel a bit out of place, like a cartoon character in a live action film or vice versa.

Various synth modulations (connections within the synth) can give a synth sound a bit more life, and some of the parameters, and some additional effects, can give your synths a lot more complexity and depth. This is the difference between chiptune instruments and modern synths. Depending on the sound you're going for, you have different techniques of getting there.

Beyond just designing the sounds, they gotta be mixed well, and you gotta get a sense of performance into them. These are two very different processes, with occasional overlap.

Arrangement is okay. There's some nice references to other Zelda melodies, the mix doesn't repeat itself much, and it flows well.

Work on your sound. :D
