mutagene is an awesome ReMixer but I am not such a fan of the atmosphere in this song. The drumming is great and really powers the song but I don't feel that it fits as well with the rest of the song unlike many of mutagene's other mixes which adhere together quite well. still a good remix just not mutagene's best. 7/10

There is always something interesting going on in a Mutagene mix, but i'm just not feeling this one. It starts out with the source original, and from there some different synths are applied, and some effects, but it still remains pretty much the same with a stucatto bass and languid lead. The drums in themselves are nice but don't mesh well, and compared to his other work, this one seems like a throwaway.

I usually like to start my listening experience by comparing the remix to the source tune, especially if I'm not familiar with it. In this case, I had no luck finding one. The remix page lists this as an SNES game released in 1996. The closest thing I can find that even partially matches this is a game called SD Ultra Battle: Ultraman Densetsu, a game for which I cannot find an SPC dump.
I did manage to track down an Ultraman 2 - Shutsugeki Katoku Tai Famicom Disk System rom, however. The game's opening theme is the same as the chiptune sampled in the intro of this remix. This leads me to believe that the information in the OCR database is incorrect, and that this is a remix of the FDS game rather than the SNES game.

...and now that that's out of the way...

I like this. It has this upbeat, almost 'bouncy' feel to it.
The lead synths have this long, distant quality to them; yet they still manage to stay in the foreground. It works well, creating an interesting contrast with the chirpy staccato bass and drum tracks.
There are a few detractors, though. I personally could do away with the sporadic distorted effects that come in at 1:21. As well, it would be nice if there was some more variation in the synth bass line; it's essentially copied from the source. Apart from this, the arrangement is alright. It doesn't stray to far from the original, yet still manages to do it's own thing. In a way, it vaguely reminds me of a certain early 70's synthesizer album that I am rather fond of.

I don't like the background floating synth. It's distracting to me.

The 'breakdown' with the random synths was weird, I coulda done without it.

Aside from that, it's a trippy mix that's pretty upbeat. I'm not crazy about it, but it made me smile.

Ok, so... although it is short, I can't stop listening to it. So many years and it still rocks my ears. Never heard anything like this on this site, which is pretty good. Mutagene has unique programming over space effects. Retro intro is fantastic. Wet pads and panned bass are both fitting perfectly, but the percussion arranging in particular was what brought more to my attention. 0:51, 1:16, 1:40 for instance features some kind of groove with trash can snares making transition from one part to another; it is way awesome.

The synth music box (1:42) started with similar melodic lines of the atmospheric pad. Then at 2:06 it plays the same as the intro melody. Great way to build things up.

All sounds here are suitable like pieces of a puzzle. And the title of this track is made of instant win.

This is, well, a weird remix to listen to.

It starts off with a simple melody then splits off into into faded/fuzzy background music while the melody continues slightly dampened.

It's like you're at one end of a very incredibly long hallway and a few members of a classical string quartet are at the opposite end practicing while a "boogie woogie" band plays on your end of the hallway with a xylophone player coming in towards the end.

At least, that's the image I get while listening to this mix.

The chip sounds in the intro don't mesh with the drums. Once it gets past that, it starts sounding cohesive + very good, and that's what you'd except from a mutagen mix. I'm impressed by the use of stereo. The floating synth is lagging a bit. Doesn't bother me, it works. Very laidback feel in this one. It stops suddenly and feels underdeveloped. Nevertheless, this is a quirky, relaxed, good-sounding mix, so it's worth checking out!

edit: well, actually it doesn't stop that suddenly, but it does feel somewhat underdeveloped. There is a bunch of great details, but overall it could have gone more places.

I do kind of think the chiptune-y sounds kind of sound out of place, especially when you introduce the synths around 1:50. they sound good on their own, but maybe a different synth could have been used for the chiptunes.
