February 21st, 2013:Square-Enix recently went on a media tour for the purpose of promoting the game before beta starting, and Joystiq's massively.com has quite the deluge of videos and articles detailing many systems and aspects of the game. Several key elements are videos describing what I see as an excellent solution to a gamepad control scheme, as well as comparison vids between PC and PS3 showing new videos. Poor, unoptimized PS3 version...

Well, it's been a long while, but there have been a steady slew of alpha test videos and CG trailers released over the past few months for the new branding of the newly redesigned Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn(previously FFXIV 2.0), with the latest trailer, A New Beginning, having released today along with the Beta Test Application/Survey page. All previous players who qualified for Legacy status will have access to the Beta starting with Phase 1, while those looking to get into the PS3 Beta test(starting in Phase 3) will have to fill out an application. Original Post: Well this was definitely an... awkward announcement to say the least. It makes sense considering that the FFXI team director has stated time and time again that they'll be working on the next Square MMO, but I also find it strange that they mentioned it as a PS3-exclusive, also considering that said director said multiple times that it was gonna be next-gen PC, 360, and PS3 the whole time.

Anyway, thoughts and speculation?

It wasn't mentioned as a PS3 exclusive. There was a little wordplay on Tretton's part; he said it would be playable only on the PS3 when it launches in 2010. It'll probably make its way to 360 and PC eventually, but PS3's going to get the initial release.

It looks pretty cool; I'm interested in seeing more of it.

Myself and a bunch of friends are avid FFXI players, and those of us that know about this thus far are pretty stoked/weirded out by the sudden WTF announcement.

It looks like a high res version of FFXI itself as it even has the same races I believe(or at least races that look like 'em) which could be a good or bad thing. Hopefully they'll take the stuff they learned in FFXI and add in some things from other successful MMOs and make it sweet.

I noted that too, very clever. Let's hope the 360 version is two days after if I haven't gotten a PS3 by then.

I thought Tretton said it would ONLY be playable on the PS3?
