Sorry OCRemix... I'm doing things my way now.
Hi all,
I regret to inform everyone at this community that I can no longer continue my years of support for this site. I've been a member for nearly a decade now, listening to everyone's work (though I may not have been active in the forums), and myself, too, have submitted work to OC. This is why I am writing. I have sent submission after submission after submission after resubmission over the years and each one being denied. My last submission (Castlevania IV) - which can be heard here http://soundcloud.com/brian-butts/su...a-iv-the-spins Was denied by a single judge and not given another look. This judge probably hasn't even heard the original - it's probably before his time. The previous submission I made of Final Fantasy "Shadow" ended up being published and is now on iTunes - http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/exo...ce/id424391447 Of course they denied that submission. TWICE. I've also sent in remixes of Into the Darkness, Edwards Harp, Mute City,a couple songs from SNES Sim City. ALL DENIED. Some of them twice. I hate to say this stuff, but I've heard some of the stuff on here - and it plain sucks. I don't understand how months of my work can't compete with someone who took a dump into their microphone. Give me a break. I have a music degree, been playing guitar and piano for 15 years and I've done the drums even longer. Not to mention killer studio chops... Maybe I'll come back when you get better judges... Bye OC |

Kay, I love you , bye bye!
Just FYI there are plenty of artist whom have a similar story. Look at Brandon Strader. His stuff started off pretty awful, and then he kept at it, trying his best to improve himself up to OCR's standards. Now he has a hit song that has booku listeners on the Youtubes. Never give up man.

I don't see the Castlevania mix he linked mentioned anywhere here, but here's the Shadow remix thread.

I was about to say, I sent a lot of stuff to the panel a few years ago and as a result had to give up for a few years because I felt the judges' PR was weak. Heck, I even had two songs that were passed but had the decision turned around; it crushed me dearly, but yet I'm still here. (and one of the two made it in the end, so yeah.)
But nowadays, the judges are willing to listen to people's concerns and give as much help as they can when reviewing things, and that has helped boost my confidence when sending things out towards the panel. How long ago did you send the track? If it was declined by a single judge it would've been a straight rejection, or it would've been so long ago that one snobbish judge decided to crush everything (most likely Protricity if it was in his time). In regards to the Shadow submission that's still behind the new judge blood's time, and even then they offered as much as they can to help you grow. I heard the Castlevania sub, and to think that they'd knock on sources "before their time" isn't true. Providing the judges have the source, they compare it with the arrangement to see what is done with it. And even younger mixers here have been able to make remixes of songs created before they were born (mostly looking at Neblix if anything but I'm sure there could've been others given the depth of this community). As an artist, I have known the hardship it takes to get a song posted. I'd spend a lot of time in making great music for others to listen to, and while it does get disheartening to see them get rejected from the judges, it doesn't stop you from keeping on going and improving according to the advice you've been given. Many of the artists here on the site have suffered rejections for years before getting to where they are now, so don't think that the site releases a lot of crap, because every last submitter cares about their work a lot and have shown a lot of thanks for it to be there. Heck, some of OCR's supporters don't even contribute actively to the site anymore, and are still happy with what they do. Seriously, just take the criticism on board, head to the workshop for help on new works (it's a huge stepping stone there, believe me), share it with others, and give it your all. That's all that needs to be done, not any open bashing on newer OCR material (which I believe for the most part is pretty neat |

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

So, uh, bit of a flaw with your statement of "never heard the original." Isn't a link to the source required when you submit to OCR? Therefore, wouldn't it then stand to reason that yes, the judge did actually hear the source?
EDIT: Rexy beat me to it.

Maybe you should sit down and actually post your work to the Workshop before you submit your tracks and actually get some other people to listen to what you're planning on submitting before you submit it. Critique and revision is part of a healthy creative process. You need to get fresh ears on your tracks before you send them to us. As an artist, all you're ever going to hear in a piece you worked for months on are the good things. Quote:

We always listen to the source, regardless of newness or oldness. iTunes is not the arbiter of quality. When I was rejected here I too wrote some angry screed about how much the music they did accept sucked yadda yadda. But in fact, they had some pretty useful advice for me. Like most of us, you have room to grow and the sooner you figure that out and start to see criticism as an opportunity to improve, the better.
