Default OCR00672 - *YES* Kid Icarus 'Icarus Orchestrated'

A re-submission, actually, as I submitted it a few months ago but you didn't post it on the site. If that was intentional, lemme know, and I'll stop bugging you.

I did a complete reorchestration of the introductory tune from Kid Icarus.

Original Composer: Hirokazu Tanaka
Remixer: ZhayTee

Hmm! Nice! I particularily like the fluty oboey sounds. The string sounds are excellent! This can't have been done through a module?

Way too short though!

Yes.

This sounds awesome, except for the length. It doesn't feel *really* underdeveloped like some other mixes here, but it sounds like you could have easily broken out into a huge brass fanfare or something after the mix ended. The point is, it could have been longer, but it doesn't feel like it needs to be longer.

Wow I love the way this one starts, and you know what? I keep loving it!
It's kinda simple, the drums are almost boring. When the strings come in and give it some body around 0:40 it sounds really good.

Only gripe with this mix? Length. It's good, but it's too short to me. If Zhay could have come up with a way to extend it (without getting repetitive of course) I would like it more.

Nice quality on everything, but it DOES sound a little undeveloped.
A few more layers in there and it'd get my vote. It's also yes, very
short. Great work though.

Yeah it's kinda empty in some parts, but this is one of those things where you'd have to be careful adding more layers, lest you screw the whole damn thing up. All in all it's a solid mix, but now that I listen to it again I agree with orky about the ending. You almost do expect some sort of grand finale finish. But enough of that. There's nothing here that would/should hold this mix back. Post it.

Default wow.

Too EMPTY???

Well, not really. If the author put any more layers in there, it'd be too overdone. I took this orchestration class, and I found that for the most part, with the majority of orchestral works, in any given piece you will find that for MOST of the piece there are only a few instruments (or sections) playing at one time. For instance, in Beethoven's 5th, he starts out with strings and french horn. That's it. He varies throughout the piece and only uses lots of layers in pieces that require lots of volume or energy or both. In this piece (the Kid Icarus one), we don't need any of those high energy/emotion/volume moments so the author, in MY opinion, this guy did a marvelous job of orchestrating this piece. It's varied, it's not the same full-orchestra-in-your-face sound that I've heard from some of the mixes on this site, and with the symphony orchestra, moreis rarely better. So I give it a yes, with my only complaint being the length, because everything else is near perfect. "More layers..." HA!

Love the sounds too.

DC

Edit: On second thought, that ending REALLY needs some work... Right before the last chord, the instrumentation could drop to just some pizzicato strings and maybe a bassoon, followed by a brief fanfare recapitulation of the theme and THEN a nice big bang chord at the end. THAT would float my boat. So I've changed my vote to NO, though I can't vote yes OR no since the polls seem to be down. Anyway, since everyone else voted yes I doubt my little demand for perfection will have an effect.

DC, again
