Shenmue

Another mutagene ReMix, another Shenmue ReMix. This one's a bit more fun than the previous Matsuri Madness mix he submitted, and every bit as quality as far as the saucy ambient sounds and atmospherics go. mutagene got a brilliant ear for acoustics, no argument there. This track does fun breakbeat shtuff, though, which makes it enjoyable cause you could groove OR zone to it with equal success. As soon as I get moved into my new home, I'm playing this damn game, because from what I *have* played, it seems damn cool (as does PSO), and mutagene's excellent mixes make me want to play it even more. This one really raises the bar on ambient breakbeat tracks on this site, as it sounds VERY pro. Definitely grab if this is a genre you like - I wouldn't have to think twice :)

Strangely enough, those screams at the end reminds me of the smoker from L4D, although this song has been posted way beforehand. The song itself has a strange vibe going on with it though, with the whole casual atmosphere going on, yet keeping the killing going on in the background throughout the song.
Odd concept, although I don't think it really rings with me.

The death screams did not phase me in the least. I guess I am the target audience for something like this.
Played this mix while driving, definitely killer background music. Put this on your shuffle list and just enjoy whatever it is you are doing when you hear it.

short, rhythmic, and without much variation, this mix is not going to end up on any playlists that I make. It won't end up banned from shuffle though, it has a nice feel to it with the various parts of the piece meshing together well.
Actually, I think the biggest defining feature of the mix is that it sounds like it wouldn't be out of place in a video game. It's unobtrusive, has a point where it could be easily looped, and is very atmospheric.

Very cool intro and good use of space in the different instruments. Not digging the guy dying fx, but that's obviously already been mentioned. Very cool production on the beat and sub bass. Not a whole lot of direction on the mix as a whole. I was really expecting things to take a new direction at some point and blow the listener away, but never happeend unfortunately. Would make a cool backing track, just not as effective as a standalone song.

This is like a pretty good soundtrack/bgm piece (sans the vocal bits), but doesn't really stand alone as it is.

I enjoyed the beat, and the development of the introduction is very solid. Like others, I am put off by the scream (especially hearing it at the end). I would have cut the piece sometime during the old man's voice (I haven't had the good fortune to play Shenmue, so I don't know which character it is).

A short mix, and way too many death screams (or way too many of the same death screams). I like the beat the piece sets up, but I was expecting it to lead into something more. It felt like one long introduction.

A decent soundscape here, but the dude getting killed over and over and over is annoying. Well produced but boring. Sorry. :(

This one looked lonely with only one review. Mutagene seems to be an underrated mixer on the site due to his game choices for remixing, which is a shame as he consistently delivers transporting aural experiences. I personally prefer Mutagene's other Shenmue mix, as this is a bit simple. The fighting effects didn't bother me that much in the repetition sense. Of course, I'm a recently converted Shenmue fanboy (haven't played the first one though, hope to do that with the supposed remake next generation). Overall, simple, works well.

A nice little rendition of the Hazuki home's music. It does get a little repetitive, though, and constantly hearing this guy get killed in the background might've been a little overdoing it. It has a good beat, but other than that, not a whole lot to make it special. Still, worth checking out for any Shenmue fan.
