Super Mario Bros. 3

n00bfl00d continues... this one's a short-but-sweet guitar-only take on SMB3's Warp Zone theme, courtesy Evahn, who writes:

"This originally started out as me just picking and strumming around two chords on guitar, and when I wanted to put some leads over them, I accidentally stumbled on the Warp Zone melody. The way I recorded it, it sounds pretty laid-back and kind of sleepy, I think."

Definitely getting that sleepy vibe... which sounds like a thinly-veiled euphemism for "high" in this case. Speaking of which, Pineapple Express was actually rather amusing. Of course, I saw it at the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse, where beer is not only allowed, but encouraged, and that may have helped. Yeah... right then, this is a short mix of a pretty short source, and so it doesn't go all crazy-interpretive, but it does put a definite spin on things. Vinnie writes:

"Haha, this song. It sounds so simple, it's only two minutes after you cut off the silence at the end, and the rhythm is definitely off in some places. Yet I can't help but like it. It's quite charming. The interpretation is pretty interesting and it certainly creates an atmosphere. The parts are more intricate than they seem, and the interplay is cool. Recording is good, and parts are distinct. Even the rhythm problems with it seem to add to the idea that it's something laidback and sleepy. I almost feel like a tighter version might work against it..."

Agreed. But it was Jimmy who had the more amusing, transcending commentary:

"So Amanda is working on some sort of craft project behind me, and she just sprayed some sort of silicon sealant of sorts, and it's getting to my head and making me all sorts of dizzy. Coincidentally, I decided to vote on this track.

I feel like I did when I was on laughing gas drifting on cloud 9 when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. The mellow vibe and general chord structure are invoking a sort of trans-dimensional experience on me. I love the panning, with lead on the left and rhythmic strumming on the right. Just the right amount of reverb, too. I'm sitting here waiting for Elvis to walk by any moment."

D.A.R.E. to keep the OC ReMix Judges Panel off drugs. Of course, incapacitated or not, judges generally seemed down with Evahn's mix. It's straightforward, says what it has to say without meandering, and is conveniently loopable for extended periods of "meditation" that may or may not include hallucinogenic one-up shrooms or any of Dr. Mario's rather suspicious pills. I don't know why I ended up talking about substance abuse so much in this writeup... for the record, the respectable people at OC ReMix advise only legal & responsible activity in this particular domain, get high on LIFE, etc... but whatever: good, short mix from a newcomer that's loose, lazy, and relaxing.

This just came on my MP3 player. First thought was "I didn't know I had Under the Bridge on... wait, that's the SM3 warp theme..." Looks like I wasn't the only one catching a Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe from it. (Under the Bridge is probably my favorite song of theirs--slight aside.)
It's good. I really don't think it needs a re-record; it already sounds pretty solid. My thought is that mellow tracks work well with a minimalist approach, and so the simplicity works in its favor for this track. Additional instruments would change its flavor.
Anyway, rather than worry about redoing this track, why not go for another one entirely? There're plenty of other themes that could do with a little mellow treatment, and a new track could provide some fresh perspective if you're looking to mix things up a bit more. KF

I too wish there was more to it; I pretty much just hit record as soon as I figured it out, instead of giving myself time to add more to it. I have tried to re-record it though, and it never comes out sounding quite as good as this one. I might try it again, with some more instrumentation maybe.

This is the kindof track Mario would enjoy after a long day of surf, sun, and placing himself upon small blips that represent levels.
But I really enjoyed this mix, it's relaxing, sincere, and it reminds me of my Mario all star days.
I'm also reminded of Buckethead's "for mom" song.

I liked it. Gave me the whole "mellow, chilling and smoking" vibe, which was really nice. I'm also fighting off a yawn because of said vibe. Only thing I wish the mix contained was more of it, since I feel that just two minutes of this stuff wasn't enough. Still, there's a repeat button for a reason. :D

I just wanted to say that I used this song to cure the small bout of insomnia I had the other night - it's perfect for calming down and relaxing. I'm interested to hear what else you can do - please do post the updated version, I think it'd be very nice to hear.

I can't say that I like this one all that much. It's very repetitive and there really isn't all that much substance to it. It's kind of nice to listen to for a little bit but not for the full duration of the song.

I enjoy this one very much. Sparsity of the instrumentation is good. Sounds tired, in a good way.

Polo, I was wondering if anybody else picked up on that. This screams Earthbound to me. Or, well, sort of mutters it in a David Lynch-esque fashion. If Earthbound had a secret warp area, this would totally be its soundtrack.

Wow,.. pretty sweet mix.
The recording is pretty rough, yeah, but is a nice add to OCr anyway.
Good job

I read the first post of this topic, but didn't see any mention as to the song's specific origin in game.

I'm getting a really Earthbound-ish vibe from this, like from Summers or the Cliff That Time Forgot or the coffee break cutscene. It just feels so warm and reminiscent. Plus it makes me chuckle. No laughing gas necessary.

My thanks to everyone that liked this.
I'm totally going to record my new version. You guys have inspired me.

Considering the length of the original I think the length and variance of this mix is perfect. Very dreamy, or whatever other word you want to use to describe it. I can see it being used as an intro to some sort of bizzare 70s movie or something, very different.
Funny thing is somehow, this ended up being the first SMB3 mix that I have downloaded, considering how often I come here to check out new and old mixes alike, that was a bit of a surprise.
