LADIES & GENTLEMEN, WOULD YOU CARE FOR SOME RAP??

I hope to hell the answer's an emphatic "HELL YES" and nothing less, because in that case you're in luck: metaphist has gone in a completely different direction with this new Zelda OoT mix, offering up a superb mix of hip-hop, rap, turntablism, & funk that's ridiculously awesome. As in stop reading, start downloading, and come to back me when you've heard the whole thing.

Waiting...

Back?? Right, so it turns out Paul's part of a duo called Angry Sons along with Psychosis Abstrakt, and they JUST released their first album Minus World on Bandcamp, and you should check it out. Now that you've heard the entire mix, I'm sure you'll be persuaded :) The ReMixer writes:

"This one's been floatin around in my soul for a while now, and since we finally got the clos...er, studio...set up for recording, I decided to sit down and see what I could write to it. 'We' refers to Angry Sons, be sure to check out the promo. My goal for this was to throw a reference to every Zelda game that's come out so far. And no, THAT game doesn't count."

From the beats to the synths to the rhymes to the flow, everything here works really damn well... it kinda came out of left field, for me, since there weren't too many clues in Paul's previous mixes to suggest the shift in gears, but there's certainly a consistent funky aspect & plenty of polish across the board. I'm not gonna do a full play-by-play, but just look at what Shariq wrote:

"This is the tightest thing I've heard since José's Unknown from M.C. Really great beats, nice adaptation of the Temple of Time theme, and absolutely excellent, relevant lyrics. Vocal performance is superb; great flow, mixed just right. Love the scratching."

Dem's words of praise, to be sure. I'll go one further and suggest that this mix deserves the legitimate, not-being-ironic usage of the word "dope" to truly quantitfy its glory. Fantastic stuff; to recap, Paul can rap, he's in a group that just released an album you should check out, and if this mix is any indicator (spoiler: it is!), then you'll love said album. Really iconic stuff; 2013 continues to roar.

Congrats, meta! I've enjoyed this since SupX showed it to me a long while ago, and it's still sounding great.

I disagree slightly with the opinion that the rapping should/could have come in earlier. When I first heard this my initial thoughts were "cool, some traditional meta synth-y stuff, but with a chill hip hop twist and some gratuitous turntablism throughout," but then when the rapping kicked in I was thinking "oooohhhhh yeeeaaah, he killed it!" Since this was the first of meta's rapping that I ever heard, I felt like that elongated intro approach leading into the rap much later in the song works smoothly because it's kind of like meta saying "yeeeaaah... I've made a few instrumental stuff, but now let me show you what happens when I grab the mic." :nicework:

Now this is true blue rap! Great work with the music side of the arrangement and the delivery of those lyrics were incredible! Clever idea using the titles of the Zelda games in the lyrics and making it work. Even Link's annoying voice sounded good with the scratches at the end. Damn good ReMix, man.

This right here is where it's at! Such a smooth delivery, both vocally and instrumentally. Clever witty lyrics too. I remember this from the WIP forums awhile back and liked it then, and the final version is even better. Congrats Paul, keep it up! :)

This is definitely a creative take on this mix, and I thought it worked well.

Wisdom, courage, power
My courage, my wisdom, power
My courage, my power, wisdom, courage, wisdom, courage, power
My courage, my wisdom, courage

[Chorus]
It's my time... it's my hour
My wisdom, my courage, my power
Hold ya sword up, never cower
From Gerudo Valley to Ganon's Tower
I done seen things... I did my dirt
I seen lies take lives, man, the truth hurts
Traveled the whole earth, hold my shield higher
Stronger, braver, much wiser

Back in the day, they never held the kid's hand
With one wooden shield and a sword from an old man
The land traveler, Moblin battler
No telltale cracks in walls, no access denied to amateurs

Just wits and a little bag o' tricks
My grab bag'll have Felix the Cat callin' it quits
And Batman ballin' in fits of jealousy
Got it on lock like a skeleton key

Green threads like a thief to steal through
Dungeons, reveal rooms and uncover the real truth
With divine tools, and I ain't no new jack
My heart belongs to the old school, man, my link's to the past

Sleepin' on the kid, you might as well sleep with the fish
Instrumentally gifted when I'm wakin' the wind
Takin' offense to fake emcees abusing the craft
The lime-light removes a majority of these masks

I write rhymes like every twenty-four's my last
And talk big like I dropped the Minish cap
You can guarantee I put my spirit in these tracks
The way the industry is out of wack, it's like the very oracle of rap got kidnapped

Overdue for a tall hourglass of sunshine
Delivered by dogged determination in the twilight
Four times the fight when I grab the mic with fly words
That channel the heavens when I point it skyward

[Chorus x2]
