Arranging the music of one song...

"Battle BGM"

Primary Game: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (Nintendo , 1987, NES), music by Akito Nakatsuka

We start the week with a short & sweet treat from Platonist (Jonas Loman), who turns in a breakbeat/chiptune-laden d'n'b take on Zelda 2's "Battle BGM":

"I seem to have a thing for shorter remixes these days, probably because I've been focusing more on chip music this decade. This track kinda concludes my 10-year-spanning Zelda forest theme trilogy too. And, yeah, I know this isn't a strict forest theme, but hey, it does play in forests, so... anyhoo, I always wanted to make a remix of this, and finally here it is. Cheers!"

I always love seeing Zelda 2 mixes because it was such a unique game in the series, and the music kinda reflected that. As Jonas mentions, this is a shorter arrangement, but it flies by at a quick pace; plenty of breaks, but it never breaks. Chips & synths dominate the landscape, and there's some glitching thrown in to electrify things further. Jonas resubbed this with a little less restraint, per judges' feedback; Chimpazilla writes:

"I think this is great now. Interesting all the way through. The track has a surprising amount of sub bass (grin). Ending feels cut off, I would prefer that last note end naturally.... but other than that this works for me. Fun track!"

Judges did still feel like this could have more contrast/development, and that it sits in a single "mode" for most of its duration, but this is less of an issue for a shorter piece - Liontamer writes:

"More should have been going on with the breakbeat writing, but beyond 2:07 there was more attention paid to that before the close... still a win though and creative, expansive work by Jonas."

I think perhaps with both chip & breakbeat-style mixes there's sometimes a tendency to keep things shorter, which is cool, but I agree that this could have used 20-30 seconds of variation with an alternate angle, syncopation, mood, etc. to give it just a bit more depth & character. Fun stuff either way, offering a lively, beat-peppered Z2 "Battle" frenzy!

I think this song goes for a specific vibe and just CRUSHES it. Really fun and enjoyable. Stay for the unique solos and variations of 2:05+ as well. But man, this is fun all on its own. Great job here by the remixer! No way to sit still through this one.
