Black Ace (Alexey Bakhmetyev) hits us with a second helping of Contra: Hard Corps, following his 90's dance debut back in January with a more modern, aggressive dubstep take:

If you can't read Russian, that all translates to "I must break you" ;) And he does; the love for this game & its music comes through in a barrage of synths, FX, guitars, and hard-hitting beats. I'm not entirely sure who is being paid back, and for what, but there's clearly substantial interest involved. Larry writes:

"As soon as the melodic lead came in, I was caught off-guard by the choice in a pleasent way; very interesting change in the tone of the lead. The track ramped up at :56 and got cluttered, IMO; I can still make out the part-writing, so it's nothing pulling this down, but thought this could have been sharpened up some, since the warbling and swooshing sound. Listen to the rise from 2:59-3:11, and I think others may agree, but again, nothing truly holding this back. After the initial, intriguing build, Alexey brings it once again with an absolutely intense Contra: Hard Corps treatment; it's a nice contrast to his more club-inspired debut, and, with this kind of range, I can't wait to hear what he sends in next! Keep 'em coming, Alexey! :-)"

Certain games end up having "champions" on OCR, who take it upon themselves to ensure representation, in this case in a creative & rather badass fashion. I loved the build here, and the titular vox sample is dropped in just the right spot. There's dynamic variety, and while there's a fair bit of repetition, everything hits hard & there are enough changeups to keep things moving. I dug the variety of risers & complementary synth textures employed, the helicopter-blade intro pulse, and some sweet synth & guitar noodling. Alexey's debut mix from the same game had a more vintage, Mortal Kombat/C+C vibe going on, but he's changed it up and gone more modern here, with an effective blend of dubstep & metal. Fun, evil, & enjoyable stuff!
