  1. Is there a way you can bypass the region and download games that are available to Europe or Japan?

Nope. However, the PAL Wii allows you to switch countries(Within Europe/Australia) to download games not available in your country.

  2. www.free-av.com

Get Antivir. While it does nag you daily to purchase the full version, the free version protects you just as well against viruses(Full version includes other niceties) and is highly effective.

As for firewalls, if you're behind a router with a built-in firewall you normally don't need a software one. Otherwise, XP's default firewall does a decent job, and you can find some more suggestions here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_firewall

  3. Alternatively, if you run XP Professional(Or XP Home in safe mode) you can take ownership of the file/folder again.

    To do this:

    1) Right-click file or folder and select Properties

    2) Go to the Security tab

    3) Make sure your account has sufficient privileges on the file.

    4) Click Advanced and go to the Owner tab. You'll see the user accounts listed there, as well as the current owner.

    5) If it's a folder, check the little checkbox that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects."

    6) Click your own username, then click Apply.

  4. I'm thinking about getting the freeloader so I can play my NTSC Gamecube games on my PAL Wii. Does anyone know if freeloader works, or what verison of freeloader works?

1.06B doesn't work, 1.06b might work. There's supposed to be a new version out that's fully Wii-compatible though.

    http://us.codejunkies.com/news_reviews.asp?c=US&cr=USD&cs=$&r=0&l=1&p=23&i=9055&s=8

The store page on the US site doesn't mention the version, and it can't be ordered off the UK site yet. And most shops that would sell it don't have the new one in stock yet as far as I can tell.

  5. I'm not fond of the change, but I'm sure I can get used to it with time. My only REAL issue is the smileys. They're fugly. Can we redesign them?

It'll be fixed eventually, and we'll most likely get the old smilies back. It's a minor thing though, so it's at the end of the queue.

Wow, new forum, this will take some getting use to.

I've wondered if you can possibly have a custom avatar.

No. Avatars stay the way they are.

  6. I wonder what'd be involved in making gamecube games work with the wii controller? I'm thinking some sort of expansion download with modifications for the existing game. Once you pop in the gamecube game, the modifications kick in, allowing you to use the wii controller (and motion sensing, etc) for games like Mario Golf and F-Zero GX.

Of course, Nintendo would much rather make and sell an all new game that's designed to make the most of the controller (and your wallet), but wouldn't an alternate control scheme be along the same lines as, say, downloading new maps for an fps?

Although I think most games that have downloadable content are designed to include these options for modification from the start, not have them forced in - several years down the road, no less.

A lot of work would be involved.

In order to add this, the whole GC-mode bootup would have to be altered, and the new controls would have to be mapped to the GC controllerscheme somehow. Adding new controls or making another addition is a whole impossibility for the following reasons:

    1) There's a whole lot of GC games out there, and a large amount of them is by some third party.

    2) The GC games were never designed to be patchable, and adding a patch could be a bitch and a half to perform for most, if not all, of them. Patch size would also be pretty big for most of them.

  7. I just like to listen to them on random, which would be a whole lot more effective if one could actually randomize one's playlists in the iPod.

There's a setting in the options menu to shuffle by track, it works for any type of playlist(Made by yourself or made by selecting the album/artist)

Anyways, I downloaded all the torrents released so far, made a playlist in iTunes for OCR tracks, and from the newer stuff I mainly download music from games I've played. When the next torrent batch comes out, I'll add those too.

I don't use my iPod too often anymore though, I have a good CD player in my car.

  8. Hmm, your description sounds like it doesn't have to be and most likely isn't HDD failure. More like a power or motherboard issue, but your later post tells me it's not a power issue.

If it's a dead mobo as I suspect, you can only send it to the manufacturer, nothing you can do. I'd advise against removing the HDD, especially if there's nothing on there you need, and the part isn't the reason it's not working.

As far as getting data off a laptop HDD, you will need a converter for it since the connections are different. Alternatively, you can get an external HDD enclosure made for 2.5" disks and use that instead.

  9. I'm trying to restore my avatar, and I notice it only shows 10 of them at a time as compared to the list we had on the old forums. Considering the amount of avatars available, it's a bit daunting and slow. They don't even seem to be in alphabetical order. Could we get that rectified?

At the moment, that's a low-priority thing. It will be fixed eventually.

  10. I heard somewhere that its actually possible to get pc based emulators and homebrew on the Wii w/o voiding warrenty...

It involved action replay for GC, and a SD loader freeware program (and an SD card of course)...

solves the issues of 85% suck games from VC (so far... where are you SoM & Super Metroid, the only 2 I WANT)

then again aquiring the rom's is kinda, not legal :[

    ....

This kinda seems intresting to me, since the VC doesn't give us any kinda of visual improvments/add ons or nothing. Also would seem like a wicked awsome way to use the Wiimotes for homebrew.

This doesn't work like you want it to work. The system's stuck in Gamecube mode if you do this, so you can't use any of the Wii's new technology.

  11. Have any of you have noticed, R-Type for the TG-16 is 800 Wii points. Why is this? Can anyone explain this to me?

I actually called Nintendo and asked the question and they didn't even know!! Didn't Reggie (or Nintendo) say that all of "X" system would be "X" amount of Wii points? Does anyone have an insight to this?

If I had to guess, I thought it might be either a) a licensing issue or B) a rarity issue. Thing is, I have no proof to support my claims. Anyone got a clue?

Did some research on this, and there's a pretty good reason apparently.

The original Japanese PC Engine release of R-Type only included the first half of the arcade, with the second half being released separately. However, the US and European releases of R-Type include the full game(Both halves)

Japan will get both parts as separate games, while the US and Europe get a single game.

More info on it here: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=12624

In other news, I picked up Rayman: Raving Rabbids today and it's pretty damn entertaining and fun, even if it's just a bundle of (good) minigames.

  12. Quite a few spyware/adware variations can do this to keep themselves on your system. Might wanna add a virus scanner to your collection there. Also, try booting up the system in Safe Mode for scanning, because a lot of stuff won't get loaded in Safe Mode.

Outside of that, check your HOSTS file for changes, the only line in there outside of the description should be

    127.0.0.1 localhost

The HOSTS file is located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc and can be opened with Notepad.

  13. Well if that's the case I'll just wait for next month's salary to come in.

On that note, anybody know any good Internet shops that still sell (used) GC games that accept transactions to a bank account? Preferably in the Netherlands.

www.nedgame.com has just what you need, and also sells import games.

  14. Any walkman, radio or stereo with decent audio quality should do as your playback device, and all you need besides a soundcard and something to record with is a cable connecting the output from your source to the Line-In on your soundcard.

The latter is pretty much always a 3.5mm jack, and the former can be also a 3.5mm jack or depending on the player used 2 RCA connections(Left and Right, identified as Black/White and Red) Most walkmans and radios will have the 3.5mm jack, stereos can have a 1/4" jack, but there's converters for that. Alternatively, some devices will offer an RCA line out.

Hit Play on your player and Record on your audio recording software, wait for the tape/track to finish, and then it goes into the post-processing: Cutting out parts you don't need, separating tracks, potentially messing with levels to get better quality, and of course converting the end result to MP3. Make sure to save as MP3 AFTER you are done, and keep everything in WAV until then to minimize quality loss.

Then again, the quality of tapes isn't all that great.

Some suggestions: Don't mess with EQs(Keep them flat) or bass boost or any of that shit on the playback device. This will improve the end result. Also, if you do use an old walkman, make sure the batteries are full or you have a power supply for it :P.

  15. Disabling services has no measurable effect on your system performance unless you have a REALLY slow system. It's a classic myth, and there's been benchmarks to prove it.

Really? First time I've read about this, on all of the tech forums I frequent.

I'll take your word for it.

It's a popular myth :P. Most sites just take it from others without doing any actual research, and quite a few people who follow those guides tend to be convinced by the idea of 1FPS more(Even if they don't achieve it, or don't even consider seeing what the difference is)

That guy doesnt like Firefox? And he advocates for IE! I'm not sure I would trust him...

Note that his Firefox section mentions Opera a whole lot. Some of his info is outdated though, and he's a bit in denial about IE's lack of standards support. The text shows quite a bit of bias against Firefox too(Such as the parts on how IE is so wonderful because it works with most websites, and how horrible Firefox is for not passing the Acid2 test, which IE fails completely)

His other info's pretty good though.

  16. Evilhead:

The Classic Controller is wired, only in that it plugs into the wiimote. it even has a slot on the back that you slide the remote into to hold it, so it's all fairly clean.

Nope, the Wii remote and the Classic Controller don't hook up like that. There's connections on the back of the CC and a button to release them, but no way to attach a Wii remote to it.

I wish developers more often give out free shovelware and classic titles like they do with the PCs. Though nowadays, they're trying to cash in on the whole classic compilation idea for PC games as well. But in the past, games like Command & Conquer used to be freely distributable without any legal ramifications. Duke Nukem and even Duke Nukem 3D were on the verge of being a near public domain property since they were considered to be classics.

The retail release of Duke3D came with a bunch of demos for older games and Duke Nukem 1 and 2 in their full versions. I still have the disk around somewhere.

As for the free distribution thing: C&C offered this mainly for multiplayer purposes, since the games could run using either disk(Each containing all missions and graphics, and the cutscenes for one side) There was also no real copy protection other than CD burners costing a small fortune. Similar multiplayer methods were used by Warcraft 1 and 2, if I recall correctly Warcraft 2 allowed 8-player multiplayer with only 3 disks. Good way to get more people to buy the game.

I wouldn't mind seeing more bundles where a previous part of a game series is included with the newest, similar to the whole OoT Master Quest thing.

  17. If your main PC's registered on the network, then it should work in theory. The PC simply works as an access point this way, and everything behind it remains fairly well hidden.

However, it's entirely possible that the required ports for Nintendo WiFi have been blocked off by your college.

The ports and IP addresses used for the DS are as follows:

    http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=23958242

The Wii uses a different set on certain parts, although the browser and shopping channel go through the same ports as regular internet traffic.
