  1. Also, the constant up-selling on everything drives me bonkers.

Have you never worked retail? That is part of your job. As in "if you don't make a sales quota using these tactics you don't have a job".

As for calling each other "bro". That might just me your location. The employees have always referred to me as "sir" or something else respectable.

  2. I have come across a lot of older games just by people knowing I am into gaming. I have gotten an NES with a pile of games, 3 controllers, and two zappers for free all because I wore a mario shirt once. They also had a broken SNES pad in there which I converted to USB.

Another time someone game me a box of unsold gameboy stuff from a tag sale. 20 or so games, 2 original gameboys, and various accessories. Again, free.

When it comes to collecting, I tend to not bother unless it is something I have personal nostalgia for. I could never see myself buying something like Earthbound (unless I really wanted to play it) because I have no nostalgia for it.

I also love finding and playing games that are not available without piracy or actually owning the original console. Some games just never make it to virtual console. That being said, I turned around and sold most of the gameboy and NES stuff to purchase other things.

  3. I did, and now I keep getting asked why I can't do it myself or why I don't just buy a new controller. See the spiral here? :P

    Just so we are clear...

You can't/won't fix it yourself, and you do not want a new one.

So, you are willing to ship it to someone, purchase the replacements parts, pay for the service, and pay for return shipment.

    Is this all correct?

How much are you willing to pay for all this? I can probably do it if the price is right.

EDIT: Just searched around a bit. I know I can do it if you are interested.

    Another Edit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-NINTENDO-N64-REPLACEMENT-THUMBSTICK-JOYSTICK-ORIGINAL-STYLE-/370862737627?pt=US_Video_Game_Controllers&hash=item56592448db

  4. y'see what I'm saying?

    No.

But anyway, the link above for the joystick is a pretty average price. I see them on ebay floating around $10 as well.

3rd party controllers only sell for a few dollars more anyway.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Black-Long-Handle-Controller-Pad-Joystick-for-Nintendo-64-N64-System-US-Ship-/281154616933?pt=US_Video_Game_Controllers&hash=item41761efe65

So if you have had issues fixing controllers before, it may be worth the extra $2 since the replacement stick will be 3rd party anyway.

Edit: And back to the original point, what went wrong the last time you tried to fix a controller?

  5. Why would I buy another controller that has a 99% chance of having the same problem?

The one with the problem being third party?

And if I learned anything about N64 controllers in my day, is I don't trust anything less than the real deal. Knockoffs, in my experience, are particularly difficult for that system. A new thumbstick fixes the problem and still gives me Nintendo quality I can trust everywhere else on the controller.

If you insist I suppose, my third party controller works fine.

And if you get the joystick replaced, the replacement part will be third party too.

  6. Necrobump, but I didn't know where else to ask. Does anyone on here do N64 controller repair? I need to get my thumbsticks replaced, and I swore I'd never tear open another controller after what happened last time.

    What happened last time?

Also, you are probably better off buying a new reproduction controller. N64 is popular enough where there are plenty of companies making controllers now.

  7. Microsoft thinks they can get away with stupid policies on the XBone without repercussions.

Well put, and I hope you are right.

But if the past is any indication, Microsoft knows how to make money very well.

  8. No one's complaining about the fact that the Xbone can do more than just play video games. The vast majority of the complaints were about a) the online requirement, B) the used game shenanigans, c) the Kinect being necessary for the Xbone to function and always on even when the console's not, and d) the extra $100 compared to PS4. The first two are no longer an issue, since Microsoft has gotten rid of them, but the latter two are still legitimate reasons to prefer the PS4 over the Xbone.

The first two of which are directly related to a physical copy of the game.

Indeed they knew what was in their best interests. What they didn't think was that the customer's interests would be more important.

    No.

Any company is in the business of making money. If they will make more money by pleasing their customer, then it is within their interest (e.g. Sony).

Let me be entirely clear here. I do not support the next xbox. I don't have any desire to support the direction microsoft has been taking lately. What I am asserting is that every single one of their decisions is justified and understandable, even if I don't like it. Even if the gaming community as a whole rejects it. The majority of consumers are in all likelihood looking for the exact functionality they had outlined would be available.

Article from 2010, so take that into account.

  9. Honestly, I think another 3-5 years from now, people will want the kind of functionality that the XBone was offering. A knee jerk reaction to something different shows the immaturity of the gaming community on the whole. Moving away from physical copies of games makes sense in the long run, regardless of what we as gamers are used to.

If I look casually at my friends list on xbox at any given time, there are more people watching netflix and hulu than there are playing games. Don't you think a company with such an overwhelming amount of money and resources knows what is in their best interest?

That being said, I gave up on the 360 being a game console a long time ago. Most of the innovation and interesting games are not on the system, or not exclusive to the system. I think I will just stick to investing in older games and scoop up the ones that matter on steam from now on.

  10. Series like Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop can never be made into faithful movies because of how tied to the tropes of their medium they are. I am not saying the Cowboy Bebop would be impossible to make as a live action film, but there is really just no need for it. The Animated movie was great and accurately portrayed the characters we have come to know, following themes that the show also explored, while taking a larger scope to the artwork and even the stakes. I can't see Hollywood doing justice to the themes the show explored or to the characters while still making a successful film.

Hollywood seems to be grasping at straws when it comes to new film ideas. If it would be profitable to make these movies they would have done it by now.

  11. I think it was TIME magazine which declared them dead recently. Most thrift stores and book sales I go to now don't carry them anymore. Even finding blanks in stores has become sort of a hassle.

I don't know what it is about cassette tapes that I am so drawn to. Maybe it's just my own nostalgia, but I still feel drawn to seek them out. I especially like finding someone's old mix tapes to get a taste of what someone else may like. Getting a mix tape (or a CD for that matter) lets us peer into an individual's interests or even mood within the 90 minutes or so a tape has to offer. Working with that time limit is a challenge sometimes, but I feel like it makes me get creative with how I format my tapes.

I record to cassette using a Sony audio deck hooked into my computer. Using youtube, purchased music, and CDs I have made 30 or so mix tapes mainly to listen to in the car. I like to make a new mix tape for trips or when I can gather together enough new music to fill a new tape or two.

How about you? Does anyone else still dig through the thrift store tapes looking for some old favorites? Have you made a mix tape recently or in the past that you remember well? Do you still have any of your old tapes laying around that you have not listened to in years?

If you feel so inclined, try to make a playlist on youtube or somewhere else that lasts 90 minutes. Or two that last 45. I am interested in what people would come up with.

  12. My initial response would be Pokemon the trading card game (GBC) but that's probably just because I am surprised it didn't suck. (and because I am playing it now).

Puyo Pop. Any iteration really, I just love that game and I wish there was an online versus mode in some iteration.

I can probably think of better at a more inopportune time.
