As you may know, October time means it's Halloween! So it's time to do another one of our Halloween special rounds! This time it's gonna be different from last time, and it's gonna be one hell of a show. Let's see what we have in store!
Ok so in this round you will be tasked in making something Spooky! This can be in the form of anything, provided it fits the theme of Halloween. This might be:
Remixing a Video Game source based on the themes and ideas of Halloween. Remixing a song or track from an artist that is based on the themes and ideas of Halloween Imagine you are creating an original composition based on a commission for a Halloween type game/film or T.V Show. Transforming a piece of music, into something fitting for the Halloween season. Your own Spooky Video Game OST for Halloween. An original piece of music that is based on the themes and ideas of Halloween. Any track from any genre, in any length is accepted. I just need to recognise it as a Halloween themed composition/remix/OST etc....
With that being said, i'm afraid there will be submissions i won't be accepting:
A piece of music based of a word that you might associate with Halloween, but is not scary in itself. For example: Candy is something you eat on Halloween. However you can also eat it at Christmas time, Easter and any other time of the day. That's not really considered scary. A piece of music that mentions Halloween in passing. It must be the main focus of your submission. Any music irrelevant to the round. Music that sounds scary, but bares no relation to the themes and ideas of Halloween. Basically i must be able to identify that this is a Halloween themed composition/remix. These rules are there to ensure that this is a Halloween based round, and not a random Free Round, if you catch my drift. Halloween encompasses many ideas and traditions, so you will definately not be short on musical ideas.
    Conditions in regards to submitting:
You can upload up to 3 entries maximum. If you are creating an OST, only 1 entry is allowed. None of the rules in regards to source/remix selection apply here, since it's a Halloween round, however the standard uploading rules for ThaSauce (20mb size, MP3 etc...) remain as normal. This round and any other free rounds bares no relation to any of the sister compo's and/or it's affiliates (Such as PRC)  And that's it really. I'm here for any questions you may have, and i'm willing to guide you into opening up your own creative ideas for this round. There will never be a limitation of the music you can make that is based off the wonderful traditions of Halloween. Good luck guys, and remember to have fun!
Note: If you are remixing a VGM source or an piece of music from an artist, it would be very helpful to write down the Game and the Source you are remixing. Likewise the same for the Artist and the Song.
The winner of this round, join's the winner of the last round for a Double Dose off in Round 137.
    Deadline: 31st October @ 1PM
    Closing Date: 2nd November @ 1PM
    Vote Ends: 9th November @ 1PM

    MISSION STATEMENT
The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required.
    MnP Instructions/Guidelines
    Guidelines:
Modifying the Source is fine, so long as it doesn't sound completely separate from its original intent.  If you're gonna do a genre change, at least make sure the original aspect of the source is not lost. Tempo changes are fine, as long as it's not a big change. I'm talking like, going from 80bpm to 140bpm.  Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max), and submitted as a MP3 file. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry.  Try to avoid making quality-based comments on submissions until after the Round is concluded.  It is to avoid a Bias in Votes. For this round you can remix more than one source. Do make sure you let me know which source(s) you've picked in the submission notes. MISC/TIPS
    - When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make people's lives easier.
    - In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)

    Results
In a landslide 1st place with 15 points: TheVideoGamer And the last place hero with 9 points: Hleet The only remaining entry is Souperion’s Bonus, so the remaining positions are inapplicable. I will send a source pick for Round 135 I hopefully for next week (Roughly the 21st of August).
Congrats to everyone who participated, you peeps did great!
    Comments:
Wow looks like I won by a landslide. I’m sorry Hleet. Now this is going to be a challenge, as I’m vacating for 2 weeks, and MIDI rendering is not really possible on IPhone. So the last resort would be to use a ready made MIDI from VGmusic. Oh well, I’ll assess it in the upcoming days. I actually had a MIDI ready, but I forgot to transfer it from computer to mobile lol. So this is going to be quite the challenge. Anyways enough ramble, congrats everyone!

Production and theme are great.  It's creative and transformative for sure.  The integration of synth and ethnic sounds is tricky to pull off but always fun.  This uses an elegantly crafted soundscape with rich atmosphere.
However, it drags.  The general tone and energy level are constant for its 4 1/2-minute length.  Nothing gets repeated per se, but everything sounds the same.  The vox are nearly always there and doing basically the same thing.  Same for the bass, the pads, and the drums.  I lost interest at about the 2 minute mark and nothing pulled me back.
This would be great as part of a score for a movie or game, with great emotive ambience.  But as a standalone track I can't get into it.

I have no problem hearing the source connections in this mix.  The mixing though is very flat and lifeless.  The vocal chants sound dry and they are sitting on top of the soundscape instead of living within it.  I do love the idea of this arrangement, but I have to agree that the soundscape palette sounds the same throughout and as MW said I've lost interest at the two-minute mark.  Some of the elements sound very rigid, for example the plucked string that begins at 2:35.  It is rigidly timed as well as mostly hidden within the soundscape.  The track requires a mixing overhaul with EQ to bring each element into it's own place in the soundscape, and also a drumless breakdown would be nice to break up the repetitive energy level. The drum pattern remains mostly unchanged once it begins, and it eventually becomes fatiguing. Dropping out a few elements and adding new and surprising ones would also help break up the feel of this.

    Hello there! Thank you!
Love the ambition with this one. Those vocals matched with the pulsating bass and dramatic, cinematic instrumentation remind me of the Theme from Farscape. Instantly though, the vocals seem far too quiet. They're a huge point of interest within the mix, but I'm straining to hear them. What I do hear sounds great, although could benefit from a little layering at key points for emphasis, and some more reverb/delay/backing harmonies to really fill them out. There's definitely space in the mix for them to sit right in the middle of, so it may just be a case of turning them up and seeing how it sounds. One thing I've learned when using vocals is to be bold and confident when applying them, especially if you're not used to implementing them in a mix. These sound too tentative for me as it stands.
Arrangement-wise, the energy levels are pretty even throughout the piece. A break section somewhere wouldn't go amiss, and although it starts dramatically, the sense of drama soon fades as there's no release of tension and build again. There's the briefest of breaks at 3:27, for about 4 seconds, but notice what a difference that tiny break makes once the vocals return at 3:31.
This is really close, and may not require all that much tinkering to get it sounding far better. I'd love for you to take another crack at that vocal mixing as a must-fix, and if there's anywhere you could fit a more substantial break section in, that would be a welcome addition.
    NO (resubmit)

    :00-:17, :18.5-:23.5, :52.5-1:18.5, 1:18.5-1:43 (from 6-note vox pattern in :25-:51 of the source), 2:09.5-3:26, 3:31-3:56 (with gaps), 3:57-4:21 (from 6-note vox pattern in :25-:51 of the source)
The source is invoked most of the time, I just broke it down to help myself as I compared the original with the arrangement in order to recognize the interpretation.
I liked the intro here with some breathy vox elements derived from vox lines at the very start of the original and produced in a way that created a mysterious vibe alongside the synth playing the source melody and the organic-style drums and accent instrumentation added in at :11; all nice touches. Not as much a fan of the chanting vocals as they seemed shoehorned in due to sounding aimless, but I'll live and they add some further mysterious energy.
From :52-1:43, the textures underneath the vocals became muddy and unfocused. Nice melodically conservative but expansive handling of the source from 2:22-3:26. Beats got crunchy from 3:00-3:30; nothing alarming, but seemed like they could have pulled back some to have a quasi-clipping effect.
It's going to sound very negative when I like the piece overall; the brass from 3:56-4:21 sounded anemic and had no business being there if it wasn't going to have more presense.
This isn't as overtly melodious as the original, which is totally fine; Alex has done a good job taking the structure of the original and giving it a darker and more dramatic movie cue vibe. I had a couple of minor production issues, but the arrangement's otherwise pulled off extremely well!
