  1. The reason the song was not used was because the song largely resembled the score of The Rock, and the studio was prepared to go to court over it. Rather than go into a legal battle, they changed it in the final version. It was actually confirmed in a magazine that did an interview :)

  2. Hey guys. I don't usually post requests, but I had a bit of a big request that someone might want to take up.

Theres a lot of really talented people here, composers, singers, remixers, etc, and I figured this would be worth a shot. If anyone has ever played or seen clips from Ratchet and Clank 3, they'd likely have seen the Courtney Gears music video scene, where she sings a 55 second song telling robots to kill us. The song style, and character, is an obvious play off Britney Spears, and the youtube link to the song is below.

The challenge is this. The song only has one verse and a chorus (also included), and is obviously just a short game cut scene. What I'd like to see someone or a group of people try to do is make it into a full length vocal song.

    <Lyrics>

    (Spoken)

Yeah, whats up people, its Courtney Gears.

Are you feelin' me robot? I feelin' you.

    (Singing)

I see a future, what do I see?

Robots goin' crazy, cross the galaxy

Can't stand organics, they're soft and squishie

The time is now, we robots must be free

    (Spoken)

D'you wanna be free? Then shout with me, yeah!

    (Singing)

This goes out to all you Robots cross the galaxy

Its time for you and me to rise, up, and, strike, back

Don't, stop until we dominate, won't you feel great

When we exterminate - all - or - gan - ic - life.

  3. Thanks. And yeah, I do know what you mean about a few chaotic parts, where the melody kind of fades away and everything plays at once. I was trying to make those more of a harmony.

I'm hoping it passes, but its my first remix, and I didn't really expect it to. I more wanted the experience in it, and also the advice from the judges. And who knows, it may pass :)

  4. mmm.. well, I recognize the songs. But its really not a remix of the Hyrule Castle theme, more of the Legend of Zelda theme remixed with Hyrule Castle and the Grindery tossed in.

Oh, and point of info, that song actually isn't the Grindery theme, its actually called 'Steel Machinery', from the cinema where the Grindery turns on. The Grindery is track 7 or 8 on your Lunar CD (Since we know all Lunar fans cherish said CD, I know I do)

  5. Thanks, glad its an improvement heh. As for the percussion, I'm a bit torn on that. Some people say the timpani was overused and unrealistic (since you couldn't have a timpani play that many notes in a song realistically). I kind of liked it, but I can see it being too much timpani.

This is a song with the timpani. It also has a crappy brass I removed in the second take, but it gives you an idea of what the timpani was like.

  6. Thanks for the advice. I am going to go back and re-write the melody a bit. I -wanted- to use trumpets to give it more of a march feel. But they -always- come out sounding like crap.

And I'll be honest, I really am new to this stuff, in all honesty I barely know what a tracker is

Edit: Ok, I have a second WIP if no one minds listening

    www.stfx.ca/people/x2004/x2004cja/KTower3.mp3

I varied the velocity and note durations a bit, and add a more interesting melody on the second run through. Is this closer to what you meant by realistic?:)

And Leah, do you mean the velocity? I've actually got a working song where I'm experimenting with different velocity, it seems to be going pretty well.

  7. Hey guys, long time listener, first time remixer. I'm working on a song (Assault on Kefka's Tower), a remix of Kefka's Tower from FF6. The problem is, for the most part, it seems everyone is of the opinion the instruments are of low quality.

    www.stfx.ca/people/x2004/x2004cja/KTower.mp3

Thats the song. The instruments were all run through Cakewalks own Dimension Pro and Garriton Pocket Orchestra set. I thought it sounded good, but its my first time, so obviously that doesn't matter. My question is, if not Dimension Pro, what should I be doing to improve the instrument quality. The instruments are...

    Track 1: Violin/String (Main Melody)

    Track 2: Timpani

Track 3: Woodwind Section (Clarinet/Oboe) (Main Melody/Sub Melody)

    Track 4: Snare

    Track 5: Flute (Counter Melody)

  8. Thanks. I've been using Cakewalk Sonar 6 and Synthsoft's 'Dimension Pro'. I assumed those would be pretty good sounding, but apparently I was mistaken (or, I can't properly use them)

    Any suggestions?

For the record, the snare. I couldn't get the Dimension Pro 'Snare' Effect in the Garritan Orchestra kit to work right. It wouldn't make a sound, so I just picked a generic kit effect for it.

For anyone interested, the original song is

  9. Hey guys. Most of you don't know me, but a while back I posted some unfair comments regarding remixes, stating that I thought there should be more remixes that stay close to the original 'feel' of the song.

This didn't go well of course, and I retracted the comment. But someone gave me the suggestion of making my own remix. Well, I decided to put my money where my mouth was and give it a shot. This is my first attempt at anything musical, let alone a remix.

Basically, I wanted to know if people thought it had a snowballs chance in hell of getting past the review process. I like it myself, but I'm also well aware of the fact that OC Has very high standards and first attempts generally don't turn out well.

The song was an attempt to make Kefka's Tower sound a bit more heroic, while orchestrating it. Stays pretty true to the original material, except for the counter melody, changed tempo's and -slightly- altered melody.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy.

  10. Actually, I do know how to play the Piano, as well as a few other instruments. Composition on the other hand was never really a strong suit of mine, but I might give it a shot some time. Doesn't it usually require very expensive hardware and thousand dollar software to get involved though?

My impression was that most people who make OC grade remixes had several thousand dollar equipment setups with all the trimmings.

  11. Thanks for the support and the understanding. To be quite honest, I kind of expected some flame when I posted it, so that wasn't a big surprise. After the first few posts, its nice to know there are people who understood the point I was trying to make (or at least politely disagreed) :). To answer a few questions that got raised in the thread though.

#1: The reason for the focus on Chrono Trigger is because Square has demonstrated time and time again they will not orchestrate the majority of Chrono Trigger themes. All of the Final Fantasy games have had their orchestral arrangements, however Chrono Trigger had that little mini arranged disc (the '99 OST) and the jazz arrangement, a lot of which I thought was utter crap honestly (the rendition of Magus's theme killed my inner child). Anyone looking for orchestrated themes for this game just really has no where to turn-- which is a shame when the music leans towards orchestration that much. As you said, the statement can really be applied to any game.

#2: I never said the other songs 'pissed me off'. On the contrary, I love a lot of the songs on the site, even the ones that are out of context. Its just that theres a certain degree of pleasure in hearing the familliar tune done in higher quality. Why else would there be several versions of One Winged Angel floating around that mostly remain true to the original theme?

#3: Why make topic titles provocative? Attention draw mostly, and I had planned on making it a true statement from the argument, which I sadly failed to do.

#4: As to Mogrothir, The Trial In Concert is actually one of my favorite remixes. I do like Calamitous judgement too, its a great song. I just have very fond memories of Chrono Trigger (first RPG) and have long since been waiting for an orchestral rearrangement to come out.

I do plan on sticking around, this seems like a fairly nice forum, and I finally got around to registering.

  12. I do see the point. After going over the submission guidelines, I see what you mean about the remixes not necessarily having to stick with the original concept. With that being said though, I just find it strange that when the original concept material is so rich (and orchestral versions of these songs so incredibly lacking), one would think there would be more of them. Also, I'd like to point out, JJT that I never said 'This is what should be on the site, everything else is garbage', or at least thats not what I intended (and in doing so, I agree that defining what a chrono trigger remix is is a tad pretentious, so I apologize). Rather, what I intended was perhaps a motion to encourage more of these remixes because there is such potential in the music.

Edit: On side notes, I actually happen to like your Enter the Frog remix, I have it on my iPod. Like I said, there are a lot of great songs in the section, and I didn't mean to imply they were in any way bad. As to Vig's comment, I never said 'rehash', rather, a rearrangement that maintains the original concept. Again, something like Jeremy Robsons philaharmonic suite for Final Fantasy 7 demonstrates what I mean.
