  1. Its a great track, very nice. I'm just not a fan of the organ from 1:17 (good instrument but could be implemented a bit differently IMO, maybe slow it down to match the rest of the beat...?). Going on my MP3 material.

    Uh...what? There is no organ in either of those tracks, and I don't know if you're getting the piano or one of the pads whizzing by there confused with one. I guess I assume the former.

    Anyway, third take. Added much more treble to most of the instruments (I hadn't noticed I left the high end neglected), and brought the kick and such up a wee bit more.

    To quote the rejection email, it apparently needed "a stronger, more varied beat", "some fuller instruments" and for me to "fix up the production some" before resubmitting it. There was also the big bold "sound quality (e.g. sample quality, sequencing, mixing, processing, recording) is poor." I'm in luck, though, because apparently "our workshop forum might be able to help."

    That would be you guys, yes?

    Since take one, I tried to make the percussion a bit more punchy and a wee bit more varied. I'll probably redo the different pattern at 1:17...that's starting to come off as awkward to me, the more I listen to it. Regarding "fuller instruments", I EQ'ed some of the stuff differently, pads and bass mostly. The bass and pads are also now layered affairs (had previously all been Omniphere, now there's an Alien 303 and Sylenth backup, respectively.) Yeah, I know, the one synth lead at 1:01 is a bit quieter now and could stand to use the same treatment.

    Anyhoo, I haven't been here in forever, just thought I'd throw this out and see if anyone had anything worth saying on the matter before I leave for another year.

  4. Can I ask for an extremely vague one?

    There was a hit used regularly in the N64 Bomberman games, an industrial sounding "hit" (I don't really know if it's a hit or not, but it sounded like it. N64 instrumentation is not my specialty).

    It's mostly seen in area five, that floating battlestation.

    And I'm not asking for it specififcally, just a hit with that sort of sound.

  5. No, it's not the wrong section. I just want to know if any of you people think this would be worth polishing or I should just drop it.

    It got some decent ratings from the general-purpose internets, but you guys are normally way more...

    ..specific, I suppose, with what's good and what's not. I just recently got a decent microphone and a keyboard, and I get a new rig right before this semster starts, so I could feasibly begin trying to make a Remix for the site. If you think this would be worth the time to polish and submit, say so. Or, if you think it's crap and should be burnt by fire, say so.

    Unoriginal title for great justice. It started as (and is little more than) a midi from a bunch of Zelda stuff I was playing on a church organ, hence the sloppiness.

  6. There's no way you'll be able to do much with only $500. At very least, you'll want a decent sound card, a DAW (FL Studio, Reason, Live, etc.) and a pair of studio headphones, and then you'd use a soundfont player to use some free orchestral soundfonts, which will be somewhat limited unless you're *extremely* good (i.e. paying a few hundred for orchestral samples will make a big difference in sound quality unless you're absolutely amazing at arranging for orchestra and have great production techniques). That's also assuming you have the time, knowledge, and skills to sequence an orchestra by hand. I'd recommend a MIDI keyboard besides that, especially if you would rather play your notes into the computer as opposed to clicking.

    There are threads in the remixing forum that talk about each of these pieces of equipment; check them out to get a better idea of what you should be looking at getting.

    Is it worth the time investment to make orchestral soundfonts of a decent quality, or is it better to just buy something?

    Like, I'm getting a mic in the mail soon, a good one. And I play almost every brass instrument around, and some percussion/organ/etc. Would it be better to try and make the soundfonts or buy samples?

  7. You're in for a world of pain, then ;). Recording probably hasn't been cheaper before in history (unless you're doing stuff with a 4-track or just writing down the notes).

    I didn't know that. And I suppose I can always try recording to a laptop somewhere with better acoustics than my house. Or outdoors, maybe. I'll experiment when/if I buy it.

    "Induction microphone"? There are only three general types of mics... dynamic, condenser, ribbon.

    Cheapest way would be a $5 crappy PC mic. You don't want the cheapest, you want something that is at least halfway-decent. I suggest: Samson CO1U USB condenser mic. High quality, no other gear required, hooks up directly to your computer. Use a free program like Audacity.

    Well, thanks for giving me a response. Although the $80-$140 price range seems a bit steep. Right now, I've just got a mic from a Nintendo VRU, so it'd be a lot better.

    I had poor wording. A dynamic mic works through magnetic induction. As does a ribbon mic. I was mostly thinking that was what I needed. I'd seen ads for mics that went on the bell, but they were pricey.

    As far as acoustics go, would I need anything else? (I understand this is n00b looking, I mean- Since I only play brass instruments, should I have it directly near/inside the bell and muted, or something else?)

  9. What is the cheapest way I could get a decent recording of myself playing a brass instrument?

    I was thinking of an induction microphone, but those are really pricey. And I'd use one of those mutes with the headphones and jury-rig it to a microphone jack, but then I'd need to buy three (for different instruments).

    I have some crappy microphone gear, is there something I can make? Or does anybody else here have a suggestion?
