  1. I kinda dug FFIV and can see why they're making a sequel to it. It had a medieval, magical charm that I haven't seen in any of the others in quite the same way. It's hard to describe, but something about it just had its own magic about it.

  2. When DJP does electronica/orchestral (okay, when doesn't he :P) you know the results will be good :) Some of the volume levels seemed a bit odd to me... the skipped notes in part of the melody did too (just cuz I was used to hearing it the other way). But the variation made up for that. I like the solo around 2:30ish though. Fade-out was a bit too long.

I think it coulda used a bit of extra production (which is usually your strong suit), but not bad :)

4 out of 5 nice works!

  3. Pretty nice :) A bit minimal perhaps-- I would've liked to have heard Destiny bit more involved in the composition, as if she added a few Eldamar-ish/Dream-of-the-Innocent-ish touches it might give it that little extra layer of depth that would've put it over the top and just made it totally epic. However, what she *did* do sounds beautiful as ever-- nice work from both artists!

  4. I shall paste my review from-- that *other* place! :P

Get your heads off the Titanic theme, people :P Though this remix *is* to the remix world what Titanic was to the movie world :P

Ah yes, now that I actually *have* listened to this wonderful little piece, time to review it. No point in saying what's been said musically, though, so I'm going to do what I do better and review it more from a more emotional/psychological standpoint (and get my usual, like, 1% meta :P Yay!)

When it starts off, by the time the vocals kick in, it reminds me of snow falling... maybe tears. Maybe just falling in general. Falling in love, falling into desperation... just falling and letting everything go. And whether that falling leads to something good or something bad... well, like you said in your writeup, it depends on one's state of mind. It's very releasing, though, and the perfect beginning to such an emotional piece-- it's no wonder it's affected so many of the reviewers so deeply.

The main melody, whether it's the cello (?) or the piano or the flute, but especially the flute, feels like hope, or looking back on a memory, or a dream... something good; something warm-- possibly even joy itself. It feels the most warm around that 2:16 - 3:10 or so. But then that are other parts, like the section right before that, where even the flute feels sad. Like a longing for something not obtained.

The saddest part is of course the vocals, but a lot of the backing, like the piano, really give it that extra depth I think you were shooting for. The way the piano echoes sometimes, or hits the same note repeatedly like it does, feels like ripples the ocean. Like those tears or snowflakes hitting the water. Really a good idea for adding depth to a piece like this. If it were lacking even one of the elements like that one or the strings flowing in and out the same way the vocals did at the beginning, it just wouldn't have the same depth or reach that it does. You accomplished what you set out to do :P And I wouldn't have *added* anything either; there's just the right amount of stuff going on.

The ending, of course, trails off the same way it began. Was there emptiness and sadness at the beginning, filled by hope and warmth in the middle, but then it just left or dies away again in the end? Or is that just the satisfaction and peace of mind that comes with obtaining that dream? There's no one right way to feel about this mix; it could be played at a wedding just as easily as at a funeral. And I think that's what makes it the Stuff of Legends-- there's something in it for everyone.

But undoubtedly, the entire piece is very reflective. Very introspective. And if you don't love it, you don't have a heart :P

  5. I think Nobuo Umaro would've been a better name.

Phoebe: "...and guess what we're gonna call it?"

    Rachel: "Relaxi Taxi!"

Phoebe: "Uh! The name was the best part!"

Rachel: "I came up with it!"

    Phoebe: "YOU DID NOT!"

    Rachel: "Huh?"

Phoebe: "No, you came up with Relaxi CAB... that's no good!"

Rachel: "First of all, it's not Relaxi CAB... it's Relaxi Cab. Like Taxi Cab."

    Phoebe: "Oh. That IS better."

I like the comparison someone made to a mad scientist's theme in a cartoon btw :P

  6. Very nice COTMM :) When I heard it sounded like something like between what you would do and Gray would do, I *had* to hear it :P

You guys make the best background/introspection remixes ever, and this isn't bad, though the drums did distract me a bit. I kind of wondered why this particular track needed that much percussion...

Have you ever heard tracks like Aphex Twin's Stone in Focus? Doesn't have to be too orchestral or substantial to be powerful :) I like your work muchly, though, and this is no exception. I especially like where you were *trying* to go, even if it didn't quite get there for me. Will stay on my playlist quite a while.

  7. I think my favorite thing about this is the choir sample... some of the best I've heard :P

It's easy and enjoyable to listen to... I'm not sure there's enough here for me to call it your *most* enjoyable piece :P It's certainly up there with your best, but the GL stuff I personally like best is the stuff I can just listen to and zone out and go to a happy place :P There's a little too much "impact" here for me to do that, so I'm a little torn between listening with my ears and listening with my heart; it's hard to do either completely here. Though again, I looove the choir sample :P And it certainly shows progression of your ever-improving technical skills.

Also, maybe there could've been a bit more going on here; a few new instruments to spice things up and keep it fresh.

    8.4/10!

    :nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework:.4

  8. I think anyone with complaints might need the full version to get the full *effect* :P It really is immersive, like a little world in its own. Occasionally an SGX track *does* seem to be an uninspired, slightly messy compilation of very good *technical* skill, but this shows true inspiration and creativity as well. It's a rush and very pleasing to the ears. (And judging from Kamikaze Noodle's post, other parts of the body as well.)

  9. This work is nice ;)

just barely makes 8/10-- as easy as it is to listen to (for the first three minutes), it's a little repetitive and doesnt have a real ending... boy, that's a long fade-out, too :P

Where's the variety? :P It's certainly long enough to have some. Hmm... no, I'm demoting you to 7/10, I can't listen to it more than once without getting bored and uncomfortable :P

    :nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::evil::evil::evil:

  10. I still don't understand all the hype about this piece, maybe GL's other new age stuff just appeals to me a lot more than most people, but this one just didn't seem to sit as well with me as a lot of his other stuff :P

But my comment from the WIP was,

It could use a bit more fleshing out, and maybe a little EQ work on those higher frequencies, and the composition in general probably doesn't flow as smoothly as some of your other works. But it is an enjoyable listen and it certainly shows a lot of talent and professionalism.

Not my personal favorite GL piece, but :nicework: nonetheless!

Can't wait to hear that Gray/Freemind Battle of Olympus collab get up here! Now that's good eatin' :)

  11. I actually didnt care much for the drums, particularly at the middle-- a little loud and short on my speakers; almost out of place. Some of the instruments feel a little "short" and overly fluctuated too, at least early on before i got used to em.

The feel and composition of this mix is just about perfect, though. Quite positive (people make more positive remixes! ;)) and yes, has enough gusto to go around. Reminds me a bit of a couple of Orkybash's and a few of DJP's works, but with a style all its own.

If it has a personal connection as you mention in the writeup, you're probably a peppy, smart, and carefree individual-- a free spirit, I guess? :P

  12. Hmm, I expected it to pick up somewhere within the first 3 minutes and it never did... the intro coulda been a bit shorter. The piano (if nothing else) felt like it hit a few wrong notes too...

When it finally did pick up, it didnt build much and just died back down a minute later anyway, and then had a minute long closing...

Kinda like going to see a movie where the previews and credits are longer than the movie itself :P

But you still get points for a promising and unique start.

7 nice works out of 10
