  1. Best interpretation of this game track that I've heard so far. I really like it, it's mellow and your original bits really help keep the theme from being repetitive.

One thing I've noticed, is that I've not yet seen somebody try to keep the original rhythm from the game. The original is a waltz... I wonder if you could successfully to an electronica mix in waltz time. Up for the challenge?

Maybe it's just me, but doing a waltz mix is a pretty original thing, it might get you more attention. ;-)

Whatever you do, keep up the good work.

  2. I really like the original stuff from your intro. Very catchy, and the composition just feels good. Great rhythm.

I could barely make out the theme from the game. Man, I love that game, and that track form the game is so memorable. It would be great to hear what more you could do with it.

Even so, the sound of your mix is so awesome, I'm gonna keep this in my personal collection. The first 3/4 of your song feels like an intro. Mind you, a really great, catchy intro that I almost wish you wouldn't change. To be honest, you wouldn't have to bring in the game melody any earlier if you made the song about 3x longer and then really played with it.

That's my suggestion as a non-musician. I'll be following your progress on this one.

  3. I think this is a sweet, original mix from a cool track.

My only suggestion is that I would use a different instrument for the primary theme. The high-pitched electric piano thing is a little irritating. I think you could get away with the repetition using a different instrument.

  4. I've always loved this track from Sonic 2 and it's nice to see it mixed.

Based on the similarities in the theme, I honestly imagined something a little more like River City Rammstein (http://djpretzel.web.aplus.net/songs/River_City_Ransom_RiverCityRammstein_OC_ReMix.mp3) but I like what you've done. Going on the heavier side probably wouldn't hurt, though. :-)

I say keep it up, I love this track and while I would personally like a little more heavy depth, I think it's pretty solid as is.

  5. Thanks for working on a mix for this very memorable LOZ:TP track, it's coming along.

I agree with some others that it feels a little stale and has a lot more room to experiment.

I think you have a really great opportunity at 2:28 to really escalate the mix to a new level. Perhaps make it a bit harder and fuller. I like the experimentation you've done with the drums in this track, and it shows you're willing to give the song a bit more of an edge. Now I'd suggest you really take it to the next level and make it slam. The piano is a really strong instrument and you can throw this thing into a full, heavy beat and it'll hold its own. Then, throw some other instruments in to harmonize and I think the composition will feel a lot more complete.

  6. Wow, what a hilarious take on this typically majestic tune. It's fun to listen to this enigmatic song take a turn for the dumpy, waddling, fat penguin feel that the chiptune has given it. No offense, it struck me comedically on an emotional level, and that's better than nothing. :)

I agree with the other critiques in that you need to do something to make the theme feel a little less repetitive. Instrument / harmony changes, maybe have the theme take a break every now and then.

I think ultimately, the awkward instrumentation and repetition can work for you, but you'll have some work ahead of you.

Two (of my personal favorite) tracks come to mind:

    http://djpretzel.web.aplus.net/songs/A_Boy_and_his_Blob_Cyborg_Blobby_OC_ReMix.mp3

This track has a much less appreciated and much less dramatic main theme than the Secret of Mana song, but the composer has done ... FANTASTIC things making it never feel repetitive.

    http://djpretzel.web.aplus.net/songs/Doom_2_Oldskool_Demon_OC_ReMix.mp3

This track has dumpy, waddling instrumentation as well as a repetitive theme, but makes it work in a way I never expected.

I think in both cases, the composers have made sure that the melodies aren't repeating too often, something that may be solved in your track by slowing it down a bit... as I'm not a musician I can't exactly tell you how to fix your attempt, but I hope these references to similar, but more successful, tracks will help your remix grow.

Personally, I'd love to see your very original take on this classic game track come through full development.

  7. I'm a huge fan of kirby music and I think you've done a great job capturing the free-spirit feeling of the games' music.

I like the first track enough to add it to my personal collection. I'm not a musician, so bear with my critique. I think the song could be made more catchy by really playing off the melody with some stronger instruments. Currently, and it's quite possible that this is deliberate, the melody is a little muted / muffled by the jingle bells, and those strong, catchy kirby riffs feel like they get a little lost.

The style of the second track is paramount. It's got a great Cop Movie feel. I'm not in love with the trumpet samples, and while the organ is a cool atmospheric instrument, it's hard to feel like it belongs as the primary carrier of the melody. I might consider using the organ as an accent instrument, using it for a bridge or something, or for harmonies with a stronger instrument. Maybe think about using a piano to carry your theme. Of course, these are suggestions from a non-musician's standpoint.

And believe me, I never thought I'd hear Kirby this way. It's original and totally transforms from the Kirby style.

  8. Hey, first off, thanks for remixing Deus Ex music. There's something about that game's music that's just... fantastic. It's great to hear some music from that game. And a disclaimer: I'm not really a musician, just a music appreciator.

My first impression is that the song feels a little repetitive, with the bassline carrying through the most of the song without changing up.

However, I don't think it would be right to get rid of it... that's one of the things that makes it Deus Ex. But there may be a few things you can do to get it to work in your favor. Perhaps make that background a little more subdued once the techno riff drops in, or just increase the volume on that.

I like your work with the drums... increasing in intensity but not so much as to ruin the mellow mood of the song. I really love the "break" from the bass line at about the half-way point of the song, and that may just be a testament to how that bass line isn't really working in some ways. But still, that bridge is really great.

So, after analyzing my own feelings here, I think really working on that bass line will really improve this track. But that's not to say I don't like it; it's mellow and carries that futuristic Deus Ex spirit.
