  1. Here's an updated version: https://www.box.com/s/833ef06664d6c9eea677
  2. https://www.box.com/s/1133bbd920a6af8ab3eb Right now it has a bit too much reverb and the mixing is a little off, but mostly I'm looking for composition and arrangement feedback. I'm interested in how the song makes you feel and what sort of atmosphere you are getting from it.
  3. I actually have all of the melodies of the original in this remix, they are just pretty well hidden in by various tweaks. Also the genre is kind of limiting in nature. It has to be repetative. I haven't gotten around to adding all the little sounds and changes that make the songs more enjoyable so I will be getting to that. I don't know about adding more of the source to it without it clashing with the style. The mixing still needs a fair bit of work, but I'm at a difficult point. All I have is a decent pair of sennheisers and some decent but crappy creative computer speakers. I need something with more bass range clarity so I can keep that clubby thump but have the range to mix properly.
  4. Added some more to it. Did some slight mixing. http://soundcloud.com/kylethedarkn/progressive-house-stone-tower
  5. I noticed a surprising lack of Progressive House Zelda music. So I'm making some. Here's what I go so far. https://www.box.com/s/fac72a647b7e637e9540
  6. Sorry for the double post, but I wanted people who already viewed the topic to see that I've updated the song. Changed the part that came in at around 0:41 seconds, thought it didn't hold together too well with the rest of the song. Here is the update: https://www.box.com/s/899fef6f1b3e6116d703 Orchestrated it on headphones, still need to touch it up but here's the rough mix: http://www.box.com/s/81579419506e0c3878dd
  7. Spent a good solid 8 hours yesterday just working on the composition of this. Writing and rewriting the same chunk for hours. I think it all paid off in the end though. This is a work in progress so right now the song is just using Microsoft's midi rendering synth, but I plan to use fancy pants samples when I finish the song. http://soundcloud.com/kylethedarkn/encountering-destiny Update: https://www.box.com/s/899fef6f1b3e6116d703
  8. To me the music is far more important. This song still invokes the same emotions to me now as it did when I wrote it in midi and played it through the Microsoft Midi Synthesizer, just like it would do the same in 8-bit. Don't get me wrong a good mix and good production sound good and enhance composition and arrangement, but production is just the cherry on top of the delicious ice cream. Just look at pop music for example. That stuff is produced out the ass, but it's practically worthless as music in most cases because there's no focus on emotion via the composition and arrangement. Although, I would probably at least attempt some sort of good production quality beyond what I normally do in my music if there were any way for me to learn how to do so. As of now none of the mixing/mastering tutorials I've found have been worth a damn. They all give these vague ideas about mixing and mastering without explaining how to do any of them. For example I don't know how many times I've seen you have to use EQ to cut out a space for each instrument. Well that's fine and dandy and a good concept, but how do you actually implement it without causing it to sound horrible, and what if you want multiple instruments in the same frequency range. It's all a huge pain in the ass, for such a slight difference. That being said, if somebody was willing to mix and master my tracks professionally I'd definitely jump on that. But it's not very important to me.
  9. Wow, awesome review Rozovian, and you managed to not comment on the production. Thanks to everybody for the reviews as well. I agree for the most part, and I have to say I wasn't really shooting for a genre or anything. I just started going at it and that's where I ended up. I definitely agree with a lot of what's been said and am going to work on the track a bit. I'll be sure to post back here when I do that. Also here is a link to the mp3. Sorry bout the .wav I just like frequencies. http://www.box.com/s/mkd7an758qaa8m39jg4l
  10. This is a piece of music I wrote for a video game that will never be released. The feeling I was going for was that of ruins being overgrown by vegetation and being re-inhabited by wildlife. Think of crumbled giant pillars covered with moss and surrounded by mist. Let me know what you think of it. http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/463577 Though I do ask that you keep in mind that production quality is minimally important to me. As long as you can listen to it and hear the music the mixing/mastering isn't much of a factor for me.
  11. Alright, so this is a remix I made a while ago that I've always considered submitting to OCRemix. Before I do any work touching it up at all in terms of mixing and stuff like that, I'd like to get some feedback on whether it's far enough away from the source music to get approved. Now I always have a hard time posting here because of the bias you guys have towards dynamic well produced music that seems to overwhelm any notice of any composition. So I ask nicely, that you keep the focus on the composition and the arrangement and completely ignoring the production quality. It's minimally important to me, and I would only do any real work on it if I thought it might get accepted to the site if I did. http://soundcloud.com/kylethedarkn/song-of-storms-remix
  12. The VSTs I'm using are 64bit Kontakt Players. I have to upgrade soon I think Core 2 Quad just isn't good enough anymore. :/ And yes I do have ASIO, but it doesn't help much at all, and it's annoying to switch back and forth to and from.
  13. @Modus: They are correct in tune. I'm sorry, I should't have said it was an epic journey. This is meant to loop, not really to be a stand alone one time song. I meant this might play during a part of an epic journey in an area you might go through. As for the melodies, of course they are in A Minor if the song is in A minor. XD A minor being all the white keys on a piano with an emphasis on A? I could do a key change, but I don't think that's really necessary. Also, as you may have gathered. I'm not into the whole theory thing. And while I'm at it aren't melodies supposed to maintain a general similar feel in a song, since when are they supposed to be drastically different? XD I do appreciate the feedback though. Edit: Also would like to mention, my song is at the point where my computer can handle no more instruments, maybe one more. XD
  14. Could you explain that in non theory form? Also, they weren't meant to be melodic variations, but completely different melodies. They only sound similar because they are the same instruments playing. "The lead string would sound better if it stayed on key" What does that mean? A key refers to the scale right? So staying within the scale would be on key? If so the strings are always on key.
  15. It loops once yes...but each different part is completely different...The only thing that stays the same is some of the instruments. What wouldn't be a simple song then? Are Zelda songs simple? If so, then I don't really care if my song is simple.
  16. How do you mean simple? This is a pretty complex song. Lot's of stuff going on. Much more so than many other songs I have heard and produced.
  17. Pretty much finished, but I'm willing to take suggestions into consideration. This is an orchestral piece I made as a sort of epic journey/menu screen sort of thing. I would love some feedback on the general quality of it, how you liked it, and if you could see it in a real game. Thanks in advance. If you feel like voting on it on newgrounds that would be nice as well. http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/425208
  18. Messed with the mixing slightly again. Worked with the drums a bit and various other little things. Sound better than before? http://www.box.net/shared/hblelk30tm
  19. Oh, I know the methods of doing it, I can just never get the specifics down.
  20. I think you mean I'm not an arrangement asshat. Also messed around with the mixing. Not sure how to give space to that many instruments at one time, so I'm not sure this is any better. But meh, we'll see. XD I'll be working on the arrangement later as well in addition to adding some variation to the drums. http://www.box.net/shared/acmy48avjj
  21. Sorry, production asshat, is the term me and my friend coined as someone who takes production quality more seriously than compositional quality. Also based on what you've defined complex on, all of my synths were complex. All of them had multiple oscillators, envelopes, LFOs, and filters. So I'm not sure what the heck I'm supposed to change, besides varying the filter on the synth or some changes in volume there's really nothing more I can add to them. I will go over the mix and touch it up a bit, but I don't see it changing too drastically. I will post back when I have it closer to the final mixing I would probably expect.
  22. Alrighty, thank you. I can already see we have different philosophies on music, but I will still take your advice. I'm not a production asshat in the least. Midi can sound just as good as a full orchestra to me, similarly a fully produced electronica song will sound just as good in 8-bit. XD That being said, my sound equipment is either 30 dollar Creative 2.1 computer speakers, or a pair of sennheiser HD 280 pros. Besides a little refining, everything sounds well mixed and in the right "place." I like simple, but just for knowledge sake, how would an LFO change the sound of a synth, it would really only just add a little variation. Also if you could, can you show me the difference between what a simple synth sounds like and what a complex one does. Last two questions. What is wrong with exposed bass? and What other way is there to introduce new instruments other than just adding or removing them after having a fill or break? I mean some instruments I filter sweeped in, but other than that I don't see any other way.
  23. Well the core of a song is it's progression. While the melody is also important, it can be changed and you can still keep the feel of it. Basic/Newbie meaning what? 15 oscillators too few? XD I'm not sure what you mean at 1:32 as nothing new comes in there, and there's nothing relating to a chorus. Also the drums right now are pretty fillery. And I'll work on the other fills. Also, thanks for the replies, but production quality isn't a concern of mine too much at this stage. I'd like more feedback on the song itself. The melodies, the rhythms, the harmonies, that sort of thing.
  24. I was asked to create a remix of a song from Majora's Mask and I chose to do Stone Tower Temple(Surprising Huh?). In the process of writing it, I've decided, that in addition to getting general feedback from the somewhat knowledgeable OCR community, to try and maybe turn this into OCR quality. Here's my one main gripe though. I don't want to change the source material so far, that it completely loses the feeling and meaning of the original song. I want a remix, not a reinterpretation so much. That being said, I'm not opposed to some changes, just don't suggest changing the original chord progression or anything like that. XD Without further adieu: http://www.box.net/shared/qoy7dq5xk7 Update 1: http://www.box.net/shared/acmy48avjj U[date 2: http://www.box.net/shared/hblelk30tm So with that posted, feel free to leave comments and critique, good or bad. Personally, I'm really liking this remix.
