  1. Made changes based on Rozo's feedback. Hosting on LANDR now since they don't compress things the same way Soundcloud does. Let me know if the link doesn't work as expected and I'll re-upload to soundcloud.

EDIT: just realized landr sharing requires viewers to have an account, so I’ll reupload to soundcloud today

    EDIT2: Soundcloud:

This is really interesting! Very glad to hear a remix of Sanctuary Fortress. There are not enough MP2 remixes. V4 sounds much better than V3. It still sounds a bit compressed (?) or something. I'm not sure what the term is, but it sounds a little closed in. I really love the arrangement. Are you going to submit this for OCReMix consideration?

    Great job!

Assuming I feel confident enough in it, yeah, I plan to!

I'm also super inexperienced w/ mixing so compression and whatnot and dealing with stereo spread is gonna be a loooong process for me. I'll get there though!

A nice touch up job already! Excellent. I especially enjoyed the addition of the melody at the 1:50 and 3:40 marks, it complemented what you already had there nicely. The bassy synths at 2:35 were a good addition as well. The source is stronger, and the piece is coming along well. Cheers!

thanks! i'm still not happy w/ the composition yet but it's getting there!

    anyways, new version: v3

Hmm... KEEP WORKING ON THIS ONE! The vast scope of your arrangement's deviation from the original is inspiring and enthralling. Dub-step elements, pure electronica aspects, and that classic high synth... sure, it's rough and unfinished, but it's the start of something cool. I will admit that the source gets largely buried at a number of points, but I can still tell what it's based off of. Make the transitions more cohesive, maybe add some more continuation of instruments to make it feel unified as a piece, I think you could make this something really neat. Good work, and looking forward to it's advancements!

I'm super attached to this one and really want it to succeed! I'm determined to get it to OCR's standards eventually.

Here's v2! Drop has been changed to feature more of the source melody, added extra chops and sounds, changed the drums a bit. I think that's enough to warrant a new upload lmao

Let me know what you think!

(note: i gotta sidechain a lot of shit lmao)

  5. First time here in a loooong time! I had this summer free before heading into my last semester of uni, and for some reason really wanted to dive into music stuff in my spare time. Using Logic now instead of FL!

    SOUNDCLOUD LINK

    v2

    v3

It's totally un-mixed and un-mastered. I guess right now I'm mostly asking for arrangement/compositional things before I head in and mix it. also, if any of the synths could use work, let me know that, too!

    Thanks!

  6. See, when it comes to writing it all--I can hear it in my head, but I lack the knowledge of how to make it sound how I want.

I'll watch some tutorials or something and see if I can't replace the parts where you're like "NOT THIS AGAIN" with something less repetitive. c:

Expect an update late today or late tomorrow. :)

  7. So I'm playing around with the vibrato and can't seem to make it sound natural enough to bother with it? Can someone help me out there? I'm using Sytrus in FL, cause I'm cheap and can only afford the default VST's xD

I was just using a tiny lfo on the volume, and then I was like 'oh my god this isn't working' and kinda added that same wave on everything out of rage xD So, tips?

So, the volumes of each of the instruments aren't in sync with one another for a good mix--I'll work on that tomorrow.

And then I need to work on making each synth more expressive with vibrato, reverb, and delay--got it.

    Thanks so far, guys! :D

  8. Beginning synth feels exposed. Some more atmospherics would be good.
K, I'll definitely try to add some of those.
Synth at 0:36 feels very loud and exposed. You need something more here, and turn the lead down a lot. Part at 1:06 feels quiet and weak compared to the loud synth that comes before, when it should punch you in the gut.
Okay, so yeah I'll turn down that synth for sure. Do you think just that would help the contrast between :36 and 1:06? Or should I add/change something else?
Would like to hear more bass freqs in the center. Your synth bass is spread out very wide. Just my personal feeling, though.
I'll try playing around with all that, see if I can make it sound any better.
Lead synth on the whole doesn't feel very expressive, some vibrato could easily take care of that.
I never really thought of adding anything else to that synth, but now that you mention it, vibrato could be a nice touch. I'll definitely tweak that.
I feel overall you could beef up the track with more layers. As I noted earlier parts of it are too sparse.
Can you like name all those sparse parts? Knowing me and my personality I'll probably start seeing the okay parts as being to sparse and I'll end up changing things that are okay :P
Just my impressions. I think this has the makings of a good dubstep-ish type track once you finesse it.
Thanks so much! I'll take all your criticisms into consideration when I go back to edit it next.
  9. Oh my gosh, this place hasn't changed one bit :D

I have had the opportunity to work in school on some music, and that just so happened to result in me remixing the Red Brinstar theme from Super Metroid, which has always been one of my favorites.

Please critique harshly--although I've been playing with FL for a long time, I'm still a beginner and would love to know what I could fix to make it better. :)

(also Rozovian if you still frequent here I'd love to hear your criticism :))

    Remix: Silt Disposal

    Source: Red Soil

  10. This is gonna sound noob-like, but arrangement/interpretation is just really hard for me lately.

When I first tried my hand at mixing, I didn't have many options for sounds, and I just used what free stuff on the internet that I could actually figure out how to use. That stuff is better than what I do now.

Arrangement is hard for me anyway, though. I see a good track and think how good it is. I sometimes feel like I shouldn't screw it up by changing it, even though that's pretty much the goal of remixing (not screwing it up, but arranging and interpreting).

I feel like when those first chords come in, the synth there really fits. Like a lot. Other than that, they're really just generic and plain. Barely any effects at all.

The drums are just ACID drumloops that came with FL. It's the same sample over and over again, unfortunately. Drums are not my strong point. Anyway, this drumloop seemed to fit the best, and once I heard it I didn't really want to change it.

So, tl;dr: I'm not good at arrangement, my drum samples are rudimentary, and my synths are plain.

  11. It's been almost a year since I last posted here, mostly because I felt that everyone else was better than me, and that I could never get a mix to turn out the way I wanted, and I didn't want anyone in a music community to know I couldn't do music. But after a while of deciding on what to do, I shoved my pride down the toilet and made a thread. Yaaaaaaaaay....

So without further ado...here. I hope you guys don't mind it being hosted on MediaFire--my site's server (not really a server, but whatever) ran out of space, and I'm not going to clutter what it still has with WIP's.

I'm kinda stuck when it starts looping again--I don't know what else to add there. Also, the synths seem to be too generic, but I synthesized them myself, so I'm proud of that.

    Constructive crits? Rozo, I'm waiting...

  12. Alrighty, I need LOTS of synths. I just can't seem to synthesize any of them myself, on any synth. So here.

I need the ambient one from this, and also the bell-like one (possibly a gamelan?):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxJFXvyCu3M

Both the ambient instrument and the bell instrument (the one at the beginning):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJmEvhOZgjE

Any and all help would be REALLY appreciated!

EDIT: I use FL9, and if you're giving me a preset for a synth, the synth better be free!
