I like the instrumentation for Bonetroussle, although the staccato strings could work better one octave lower. I'm not that fond of the horn harmonies in the beggining, they sound weird since they play too similar notes. The entrance of the bassier brass at 0:42 is great, adds so much energy to the piece.

The melody at 1:11 sounds very unnatural. I don't think anyone would play it like that TBH. Add some legato or something there.

As Hank points out, the transition is very medley-ish but it doesn't bother me really. It could be stronger but it's not a dealbreaker in my opinion.

Love the xylophone at 2:05 although I'd switch the octaves between the strings and the melody here.

The transition to Megalovania is way too sudden, much more than the previous one. Piano is an interesting choice for the first melody. I think it works.

Overall I feel this sounds pretty good, although I think the bass is lacking. You have some solid percussive instruments but there are like no instruments really filling the bass role and that's an important role for such a rhytmic mix like this one. Xylophone is the standout IMO.

More bass? The instruments I have playing bass are low bassoon, trombone, base trombone/tuba, piano, and low string, not to mention timpani and bass drum. However, an increase of volume for said instruments may be needed, I guess.

When I was working on this, I kept finding myself turning down some of the brass because it just sounded too loud. As for the spot at 1:11, I messed with that one spot so much and couldn't get anything to sound better than what I ended with. As for making it legato, I can see how that would work, but it's a bit more difficult to add legato to a VST instrument on FLStudio11. If I was using something that creates an actual score, that would be a different story xD

I just went back to lower the pizzicato strings an octave at the beginning.... and it sounded really muffled, like you would have to do some serious tweaking with the instrument to make it sound less garbled.

  2. It's been a while since I've made anything but here I am, back with something new from my brain. I love Undertale and its music so much that I decided to make a nice little medley with 3 of my favorite songs from the game which represent 3 of my favorite characters as well: Bonetrousle for Papyrus, Spear of Justice for Undyne, and Megalovania for Sans. I worked on this medley off and on for several months, tweaking parts here and there and adding other things. It originally started as an orchestral remix of just Bonetrousle but something told me to make it into a medley and here's the final product. Please enjoy and let me know what you think! :D

  3. Very nice work! I'll co-sign what Kat said.

As for submitting to OCR, looping is likely a no-go. Sounds like it loops around 2:00. Writing an ending sounds like a good idea. Two minutes is on the short side, but with an ending I feel the piece would probably feel like a complete whole. I'm no judge, but I would say you have plenty or reinterpretation already otherwise, with the rhythms & feel of the parts et cetera. Also, the production approach may make it more difficult to meet the OCR bar for production, but then again there's stuff like a posted mix made with Korg DS-10 if I recall correctly, so I don't think it's impossible.

So I'd say arrange an ending & ask for a mod review :) Nice work in any case!

Thanks! Honestly, I wish I could get my hands on some real orchestra sounds. Unfortunately, I'm not lucky enough for that. What I have is pretty much the best I can get unless someone can tell me where I can find even better sounds that's not a real breathing orchestra ensemble. xD

  4. Whoa, you've got some serious arrangement skills :P

You "translated" the original to orchestrated version perfectly.

I've never played this game, so I am "unbiased": I like your version better.

Btw, what sample lib do you use?

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I used a VST called Edirol Orchestra the I used on FLStudio11. It has a large selection of orchestra instruments.

  5. Final Fantasy IX is my all-time favorite Final Fantasy game and, in my opinion, has the best music. Listening to this just made me want to play FFIX again and I really wish I could. The music you made sounded great. It was beautiful to listen to. My only wish is that you had made some changes to "The Place I Will Return to Someday" (which is the song you hear on the title of the game). You made them sound exactly the same. I'm not saying it's bad, I was just really wanting to hear something a little different. The second half of the song was my favorite. I loved the tune played when first arriving in Terra. There were plenty of similarities, but you definitely added in some of your own flair. Overall, this was very enjoyable to listen to and I hope you keep up the great work. :D

  6. Any feedback? K. Your mixing and sound design is pretty basic. Nothing terrible. Nothing stellar. It sounds like a very conservative take on the source, essentially a midi rip. Can't be sure, not familiar with the original. For a remix on youtube or pretty much anywhere, that's fine. If you have any ambition of getting it posted officially on ocr, though, it'll have to be your own arrangement.

Kudos on remixing a fresh new game. :D

I definitely agree. When I made this, I wasn't intending it to be too different from the actual song since the tune is still fairly knew and not too many really know the original. This is mainly a different style of music and a faster pace with few differences. Overall, I was just messing around with different sounds for this and I wasn't intending to go any further with it. Despite that, many have still enjoyed it regardless. ^^

Edit: Also, I should mention that when I made this, there were no MIDI versions of the song yet, at least not to my knowledge. I believe I started making this around 2 weeks after the song was added to the Kickstart for Yooka-Laylee. Everything you hear, bass and melody wise, was all done by ear which wasn't easy, I assure you. :P

  7. This is pretty awesome. It has a very PS1-era feel to it, like some of those soundtracks that went for "orchestral", but not "played by a live orchestra". Everything about it feels right. I especially like how the writing seems to match the samples perfectly. It feels very organic, not forced. Excellent work.

Wow, thanks a ton for your awesome feedback. I put a lot of work into this and I feel very proud. I just wonder if it's worthy of possibly submitting it to OCRemix. I would think that if I do, I should probably create an ending to the piece instead of making it repeat.

  8. When I livestreamed Shovel Knight a couple weeks ago, I had the main theme of the game stuck in my head. Because of that, I ended up working on an orchestra version of the theme and I feel it turned out rather well for what it was. I know many don't like repeats that much, but for this, I wanted to hold onto the illusion that you're currently playing a version of the game with this playing as the main theme. So instead of just ending if after 2 minutes, it will repeat once and then fade out. As always, feedback and thoughts are greatly appreciated. :)

  9. Well, repeats are fine, but some variation on the repeats goes a long way. I find that sometimes repeats can help bring a sense of familiarity to the piece, whereas a piece that continuously changes could feel too unpredictable.

If you can find yourself happy with what you make as you make it, I think that'll help you take the time to polish it more.

I completely agree. Thanks for the feedback. :)

  10. It's not too bad for a few days, early on in your music composing experience. The mixing sounds alright, but the instrumentation is pretty simple, and the arrangement has a bunch of looping (copy+paste). I think you could work more on having more nuance to your sounds and thinking more outside the box when writing your arrangement. It's really close to the original, and doesn't add that much new. Keep at it!

Yeah. I tend to get a little impatient when I work on something. I attempted doing that with the Shovel Knight orchestra piece I made, but I still ended up doing a repeat in there. It seems the only time when I actually make a full song is when I do some kind of medley.

  11. I like the overall remix - IMO the drums and the low sawtooth-y synth are a little high in the mix, kind of overpower the melody synth in the first section. But I think this would be awesome with one or two level adjustments.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I noticed this one has gotten over 200 more views within the last 2 weeks. 2 weeks ago it was sitting around 110 views. I appreciate the feedback. :D

  12. Alright, so it's been a long time since I've been here on OC Remix but I thought now would be a good time to come back with some of my latest remixes to see what others think. Starting off this time is a orchestra medley of the battle themes from Final Fantasy 1-9 so I hope to hear your feedback and thoughts on this medley that I put a lot of work into. Please let me know any thoughts you guys have! :)

  13. Listening on my good headphones, I personally don't notice anything too out there, but that's just because I'm not an orchestral person. I don't think I hear anything weird with EQ or clarity though.

So does your earlier statement still stand or did your good headphones change everything? XD

Though I do believe you're right where the flute arpeggio was a bit on the loud side so I'll definitely tone that down and made add my own flare again when the Pachelbel part comes in after Goldenrod city. And does the Sunken Ship really have the same song? I haven't played R/S in a long time XD

  14. Mmm... this is quite a pleasant, pleasing remix. I love the combination of Pachelbel's Cannon with the source-- this is a great concept and I think you should keep running with it.

I have to agree with timaues' concerns about the full-on Pachebel theme towards the middle of the song though. The build-up, instrumentation, passing the melody and counter melodies between the winds, and everything is great during this section, but I would steer away from overtly quoting that melody. Also, I'm not certain that kind of thing would get past OCR's judging process, if that's your aim; the Pachelbel chord progression is totally fine, but doing a complete shift away from the video game source into a remix of something non-VG (at the climax of the song, no less) is probably pushing it.

Production-wise and sample-wise, the orchestra is pleasant enough for me. The woodwinds are stronger than the strings, imo, which is good since they often carry the melody and are relatively exposed out in front of the strings. Really, it's nigh impossible to make 100% real-sounding orchestral music without recording the real deal, so there's always room for improvement here. But I think this is really good and doesn't need much tinkering, with one exception: the synthy string melody at 2:51. That one sort of ruins the illusion for me. It's a fine idea, writing-wise, but the sound needs some tweaking to reach the standard you've set with the rest of the song.

Lastly, the second half of the song after 2:30 feels a bit meandering to me. I don't have an issue with any of the individual sections (on their own, they're written nicely and sound great), but in terms of overall song structure, it feels like we're on a bell curve, with the climax right in the middle. It's not necessarily "wrong" to structure your song like that (and there are some cases where it's really effective), but I think in this case it lessens the impact of the sections which follow the climax, because the song never quite matches that level of energy again, pleasing as it is to listen to.

This is really good work. I spend a lot of time in this post nit-picking and talking about improvements, but it's not indicative of my over all impression of your remix. Over all, this is great and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing!

I really appreciate your input of both constructive and complimenting words. I understand what you mean on the bell curve and you might be right. I'm not the greatest when it comes to quality despite being able to compose really well. Though with the song how it is, I believe it's still more than enough to have many people enjoy it thoroughly as a hole so if I do tinker with it, it won't be anything drastic except perhaps changing something in the Pachelbel portion in the middle when it comes in, perhaps change up the second half with my own idea, or maybe through another Goldenrod bit in there. I don't know yet :P

  15. Hey. It's been a while since I've put anything up here. Nice to get back into the rhythm of things again. Anyway, this song is an orchestral remix combining Pachelbel's Canon in D with Goldenrod City from Pokemon Gold/Silver as well as Oceanic Museum from Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. I made this a long time ago with more bells than anything and I made many changes to it to come up with what I have now. I hope you guys enjoy it. I'm wondering it I should upload this onto OCRemix. Let me know!
