  1. Yeah my dude spits the truth. You can beat this game beginning to end in an hour, but I can think of 4 times in that hour that the experience just blew my hair back. I agree it's an experience, almost an art piece. For the love of all that is good and holy though, play this cranked on either your best cans or better yet a full sound system. Just turn it up. And then go buy the soundtrack on Bandcamp because if you're reading this at all you're the type of person who will want it and I felt a need to give the dev money somehow.
  2. Wow David. 21 years I've been coming to slash lurking on this site. Downloaded every SINGLE mix posted on this site between mid-2003 and mid-2009; like Hu said above, OC ReMix was absolutely the soundtrack of my high school and college years. I bought my first MP3 player years before the iPod to store more mixes than a CD could hold. This site has always been home to some incredible artists, and oh the memories. I remember when Jillian Aversa was Jillian Goldin. I downloaded Shariq's first mix the night it was posted... I was floored by Relics of the Chozo, had it on repeat for weeks. I remember unMod and I was there when it shut down. Years and YEARS of reading the Coop's 'Twas' every Christmas lol... Good times and bad lurking about for 2 decades. But I want to say in no uncertain terms that I think you, David, personally, have done some incredible work to not only legitimize game music as the art form it is, but to create a place where hundreds could find like minded people to hone their craft with. Danny Baranowsky, Big Giant Circles, Brandon Strader, Joshua Morse, Andy and Jill... the list of folks composing or involved in audio engineering and games specifically goes on and on. Not that any of them wouldn't have been successful without what you created here, but you were responsible for planting the seed that began this amazing community. I'm still not a musician, doubt I ever will be. But from the moment I downloaded your very own 'Sunken Suite' in 2002 and heard what could be done by musicians who loved a song as much as I did? That changed my life David, in some small way, it really did. Thank you for that. Thank you for 24 years of sharing your best with us, thank you for what you've created and the legacy you've started. Here's to you, your family, your free time and your next mix. We'll be waiting for it. Cheers brother. :)
  3. Yo can we talk about this though? https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/12/a_merry_hyrule_christmas_album_blends_zelda_classics_with_beloved_festive_carols
  4. Those are cute! Woulda liked 'em for my wife anyhow. Meanwhile, in other news, I'm almost at the end of Mass Effect 2 for the first time, and you all did some BANGIN' work on that soundtrack. Not only that, I'm pretty sure it's one of, if not THE best paced/written game(s) of all time. Props!
  5. Yeah... I mean I have NO musical skill and I could make a dubstep mix. The basics of it certainly aren't that complex, but if you take the time to really work with the song beyond LFO's and bass drops, amazing things can happen.
  6. Just wondering what people round here think of dubstep. I've hear it referred to as "technicians, reproducing other people's sounds and amplifying the bass." True, most dubstep I've heard is a remix, and true, dubstep doesn't seem to have a ton of tools in its arsenal. Oscillators and bass drops. But this site is kind of about remixes anyway, isn't it? You might like it, you might not. But damn if it isn't the most amazing experience in the world to get blazed out of your mind and put it on your surround sound system. Anyway! Talk it up. How do you like it?
  7. I know. Larry talked me into changing it in a moment of weakness.
  8. I know right? Hey Bob... I just... Just go surf until you find something we can cram Mel Gibson into, okay? Lemme know when you got something. The movie may not be that great, I just LOVE the concept behind how it's happened. With the right military advisors it could be okay, but I mean... it's marines going back in time. Suspension of disbelief. As to who I am, that is a question few can answer. I most commonly prefer the title "Lord of the Lurk." I've been here 9 years, sometimes I post, most times I don't, often I browse. I tend to show up for periods of a few weeks and disappear for years, but I'm always here.
  9. So, in what I would consider a shining example of the so-called American Dream, Warner Brothers has picked up the movie rights to a comment made on a Reddit post. About a month ago, a user asked the question, Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine infantry battalion or MEU? To his credit, instead of taking the (one might think) obvious path and bombing them to hell, he placed specific limits on the resources available to the Marine unit. A user by the name of Prufrock451, who happens to be a 2 time Jeopardy winner and technical (read:encyclopedia and tech manual) writer, responded. And responded. With a pretty epic story treatment, that follows the rules laid down by the OP. Evidently studio execs got wind of it and picked it up. I for one think the whole situation, as well as the story idea is (are?) pretty awesome. In other news, how the hell have you been OCR? It's been a long time!
  10. Ahahaha I am a LURKER. :P

  11. You poor bastard. I went to ODU for about 3 weeks before I told them to fuck themselves. Anyway, you're obviously not in Rhode Island anymore, so welcome to the 757. Don't swear on Atlantic Avenue, stay the hell out of Portsmouth and avoid the tunnels all the time but especially at 3pm, that's when the squids are getting off duty. Better to stay on campus and save yourself 2 hours in a backup. My best advice is to get out of Hampton Roads while you still can. It eats souls.
  12. You are correct and I stand corrected.
  13. I LOVED this movie. Went to see it with my girlfriend twice. For those of you that weren't aware and are comparing it to the Little Mermaid, the similarities are because Glen Keane was the lead animator for Rapunzel. He was also the lead animator for Ariel, and the supervising animator for the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas and Tarzan. The man has a God given gift to put more emotion into a character than any person has a right to. Find any Disney movie with his name attached and I guarantee it was one of their finest. Add to that the fact that Alan Menken (Aladdin, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) did the music... and you have near perfection. Aside from all that, the animation is nothing short of stunning. It easily rivals some of Pixar's finest work. The fluidity, the detail, the physics, the lighting... everything is spot on. This movie was a throwback to the glory days of Disney in the late 80's and early 90's. The music was so good that my gf and I decided to use the song from the lantern ceremony (The one they both sang) in our wedding. This movie has that intangible HEART we so want to see in animated movies and so rarely get anymore, and all I can say is I REALLY hope to see more of this from Disney.
  14. I shall break my 6 month lurk to ask: Did something happen to kLuTz that I'm not aware of? Why is he unable to submit this himself?
  15. Okay, so I haven't had a chance to listen to the album yet. I'll be doing that in a minute when I jump in my car, and I'm rather excited because I haven't really listened to ANYTHING from this site since about mid 2009... so hopefully this will be my triumphant return. But I wanna take a minute to say that the ARTWORK for this album is unbelievable. Oftentimes the web designers and artists for each of these releases kinda get lost in the fray and never get their proper due. But the artwork for this album is the best I've seen over 17 releases here. GREAT work. It's beautiful, imaginative, and well executed. I'm a whore for production, and this is just a cut above. Great work on the design guys! I'll come back and gush about the music later.
  16. I like how NO ONE looked at that picture and thought "holy SHIT I don't have that kind of time." *Returning to lurk mode...* "Down periscope!" "Down periscope, aye captain!" "Rig out diving planes!" "Rig out diving planes, aye captain!" "Close vents!" "Close vents, aye captain!" "Blow negative!" "Blow negative, aye captain!" "HELM, take us to LURKING depth!" "Lurking depth, aye captain!" *ping...* *ping...* *ping...*
  17. Atmuh, that chick in your sig definitely looks like Michael Jackson. Hmm.
  18. This project may actually be TOO legit. I'm excited for this beast.
  19. I bought a Secret of Mana cart off eBay last year that ended up having a dead battery. I did manage to replace it though, and now it saves fine.
  20. I say we have a MONTH long Festival of Shenanigans to celebrate, BEGINNING on December 11th. In which someone somewhere works some streaming internet magic and streams all the mixes that have been posted ever for a full month over IRC, in order of posting. Then we can dip into the party as we please and sample the deliciousness.
  21. Honestly, I found WoW to be much more fun when I was playing alone. I was on Stormreaver, and it was very rare that I found a group that was actually enjoyable to play with. There was one specific afternoon in Stranglethorn Vale (I think that's what it was called) where I led a group of 5 grinding for some manner of Gem, and that was HUGE fun, cuz everyone knew what they were doing and they weren't pricks. But generally, the egos were huge and it was a huge circlejerk of "my class is better than your class" or "why aren't you geared with THIS" whenever I grouped. So I played to level 62 and just quit because at THAT time at least, it was about impossible to solo anymore. And because burning crusade was out, the original endgame areas were EMPTY. Like the east-whatever where you go to do a bunch of quests for your pally epic mount. I was the only person in the whole area for days because everyone was in Outland.
  22. March 4th, 2007: I pick up a free WoW trial. This was the beginning of the end. March 7th, 2007: I pay for 6 months of WoW. April-something 2007: I buy burning Crusade. May-something 2007: I receive a WoW Rewards card and accrue a further free 6 months while paying for college. December 23rd, 2007: After a month trying to get my epic mount and 4 level 70's leaving me alone standing outside the room I need to enter to get said mount, during my 7th full run of wherever the hell it is Paladins get their epic mounts... my sense of fun begins to waver. December 26th, 2007: I type /played into the chat box for the first - and last - time. I am informed that I have spent 31 days, 19 hours playing WoW. I reflect on the fact that I have spent a month of the last year garnering fame and fortune in a world that does not exist. I reflect on the fact that I will fail nursing school should I continue. I calmly resign my position as co-guild founder of Crucible of Souls, and Karthantos fades from Azeroth one last time. Fast forward to today. I'm an emergency room nurse making 28 dollars an hour starting, saving lives, and I have a girlfriend. I remain one of very few human beings who has ever TRULY beaten WoW. All that said, it was a hugely fun game while it lasted, but for me, I only enjoyed soloing and playing with people I knew well in real life. Only very occasionally did I ever assemble a group that did not feature at least one asshat. EDIT: After posting this, I decided to Google my old guild and see what came up. The first result was a WoW spell called the Crucible of Souls Missile. I pulled the name for the guild out of my head in 2007, it wasn't connected with the game in any way. Now here's a WoW item with the same name, which seems a surprising coincidence. Can anyone shed some light on what the spell is and where it came from?
  23. As many times as I've played that game, it never occurred to me clearly what an anti-hero Cloud is. He is redeemed towards the end of the game, after he and Tifa find themselves in the Lifestream, and he finds new confidence, but it never really occurred to me what a fuck-up he was as a character. Now that someone points it out, I think that's definitely what kept me playing. You want to see him (and hence yourself) succeed in the end, but events beyond your control keep making it more difficult and taking you off the path you were on, sidetracking you. So by the end, killing Sephiroth is more than a boss fight. It's a personal vendetta not just for Cloud, but the player. You're pissed at him because YOU want to succeed with Cloud, and this piece of shit has to DIE. I've never been more actually emotional during a boss fight than I was when I kicked his ass for the first time. Great take man, thanks for making me think in new ways.
  24. It's pretty and clean Dave, I like it. I never really used the sidebar, and most of its info is now contained in the dropdowns anyway. The only thing I would point out is that for new people coming to the site, I feel the site may be becoming less and less "surfer friendly." I think many people land on the homepage with really no idea who we are, and the only hook they may have initially is that they want to download remixes for a specific game. I personally feel it's pretty important to give them quick access to a page containing those mixes. Now of course they can access that through search. But what I feel is important for making people stay is the cross referencing that goes on by having an alpha page. It presents a (usually) large number of mixes without being overwhelming. It doesn't even need to be available on the homepage, but I definitely think it should be present on the "list all remixes alphabetically" page, otherwise people are relegated to clicking through a list of every mix on the site, or making their best guess what page number "G" would be for example. That needs to be more bite sized. Now personally, I haven't used that alpha navigation in years, but that's because I've downloaded every mix posted since 2003 anyway. But when I was new to the site, I used it incessantly. It was hugely fun to just click a letter and find out what treasures were within, what games I didn't even remember that sparked my interest. It was like a game. Initially, I focused down on mixes for games I knew, but it was really cool and expanded my horizons to have that alpha navigation. Because I would be on the S page for example, to download Super Metroid mixes, and while scrolling I'd run across Secret of Mana and go "AWW YEAH! I loved that game! I can't believe I didn't think of that one! I'm getting some of these mixes too!" So there's my two cents on the alpha nav. Everything else looks beautiful as far as I'm concerned, and while I remained a neutral country in the Great Sidebar War of 2006, I like the extra space. Great work Dave.
