    [Pokemon G/S/C] Route 29 3-Voice Piano Fugue

    Hey Remixers!

    Long time listener, first time caller. I'm a classical pianist by training and decided to arrange a fugue for piano based on the theme from Route 29.

    For those who aren't familiar, a fugue has a couple of rules:

    1. The fugue subject must be the first thing you hear in the piece: the subject here is the Route 29 theme and appears and reappears in many voices throughout the movement.
    2. Voices must enter one at a time, each with the subject. This is a three-voice fugue, so there are three distinct lines, no more.
    3. The second entrance of the subject must be in the dominant. The third entrance is back in the tonic. If there are additional voices, continue to alternate.
    4. These elements make up the exposition, or start, of the fugue.
    5. After the exposition, rules break down a bit, but common features include development (a repeated musical or rhythmic pattern which often modulates to a new key), a pedal point in the bass leading up to the climax, as well as a pedal point at the end of the piece. Everything else is free game!

    Here's a shitty MIDI export of my arrangement—please ignore the recording quality! I'm looking for feedback on the composition itself. I want the writing to be solid before I practice up the real deal ;)

    Even if you don't have a classical background, I'd love to hear thoughts:

    • Are there any parts that delighted or surprised you? Where and why?
    • Does anything feel "off"? Tempo, key changes, rhythm, overall structure...
    • The fugue is quite short. Are there any sections you'd like to see expanded or revisited?
    • Are there any other Pokemon themes you imagine that could be quoted within this fugue?
    • Anything other thoughts?

    Getting Started with VGM Composition in Logic

    I'd like to start learning how to create chiptunes(?) in Logic. The question mark is because I'm not sure if the style I'm aiming for is technically chiptune. I want to create something along the lines of Mother 3, or like the tracks here (http://knifecity.bandcamp.com). I've been playing around with YMCK's Magical 8bit plugin but it seems too limited for the range of sounds I need. I'd like to use Logic because I'm familiar with it, but the stock sounds are too lush.

    My questions are:

    - How do I get things to sound game-like without going full-on chiptune? (Tips about finding and editing samples)

    - If you create music in this style, how did you learn? (Point me to any awesome resources)

    - And can anyone share a completed Logic file with me? (So I can poke around and learn)

    Piano Arrangements

    Hey all! I'm new to the community but I've been enjoying OCRemix for many, many years now.

    I'm a pianist and I've been getting more into composition lately. There are so many piano gaming transcriptions available on the web, but most of them are terrible—with all the parts condensed into one horribly typeset, unplayable file. Bleh.

    What I would like to create is a collection of well-arranged game themes for piano. Something along the lines of Karl Harmdierks' repertoire, but more expansive and more frequently updated.

    My question is... would recordings of these arrangements be welcome on OCR? I don't know exactly how remix-y/inventive pieces are supposed to be here, or if there's a limit on number of submissions, or if arrangers are supposed to submit a diverse set of styles. I'm not transcribing the songs verbatim, but I'm also not taking the music so far as to be unrecognizable. (As an example, right now I'm working on a jazz rendition of New Bark Town & the National Park theme, since they're similar harmonically and aesthetically. I'm reharmonizing some stuff and taking the melody into 3/4 near the end, but the rest stays pretty close to the original, just arranged pianistically with good voice leading and whatnot. I'm also working on turning the Route 29 theme into a three-voice fugue. Don't think I've heard any Baroque music on here, heh.)

    Anyways, once I worked up a decent number of these arrangements I'd create a site dedicated to sharing them with others.

    Really excited to get involved with the community here. :)
