jeez folks, stop selling people new software and instead try to answer the question at hand.

does your midi keyboard have knobs transmitting midi cc? i can atleast rightclick on the "patch" selector field, select "link to controller" and then move a knob on my midi controller.

you can then browse through the patches with that knob; the trouble is, there's 256 patch slots in the software while midi sensivity is only 128. so you only get to select every other patch with that method.

    well, it's better than nothing.

slightly related news, the next FL version will FINALLY get a 64 bit compatible soundfont player! not joking. how crazy is that.

    Edit: it's out already. oops.

sorry for taking so long to get back to this.
thank you!  unfortunately my keyboard doesn't have any knobs i can use.  and yeah i'm using the fruity soundfont player.  the computer i'm on has FL studio version 12.

maybe i'll try one of those alternate soundfont players. it's too bad i don't have money to just get a better midi controller.

  2. Completely ignore what the last dude because this song is friggin awesome i downloaded it a day or two ago and can't stop playing it because if i do i'll start thinking about and have to go play it truelly one of my all time favorites especially the riff at 1:40.

Heh, I added that riff mainly to lessen the chances of the judges saying "NO NEW MATERIAL; I GIVE IT A NO", but yeah.. it did turn out to be a pretty decent riff didn't it? EDIT: Nvm, I assumed you were talking about the melody that first appears @ about 0:58 . I suppose the word you were looking for (for 1:40) might be "jam" or something similar. xD

Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it! =)

  3. Hey, all! The maker of this remix is here once again to say thank you so much for all of your comments (including the criticisms about the phoniness of the samples: it's quite true).

And thanks for helping me get them to label the correct tunes used too! I was wondering if it'd ever happen. =D

And to Noir, zomg, that's awesome. I'd love to perform it with you some time live! Hehe.

    Very much obliged, everyone. =)

  4. Thanks for the info Zephyr. It sort of works, but I'm probably not getting how to actually do it in FL. I think I finally decided what my best option is; mark the keys on my keyboard that fall into the scale I'm playing in! Not the most orthodox method but hey, it works. Good thing I know how to type so I don't need to see the letters :nicework:

Don't do that. Just practice scales until you know the keys well. Any shortcut you take will only ingrain bad habits.

  5. For TL;DR, skip to * below.

Over the years, I always took pride in that long after the N64's time, while many people had sticky, loose, broken controllers, mine were still in great shape.

Until recently in my life, I still had multiple good-working N64 controllers. I found a new girlfriend and our N64 collections merged. We moved a few times. We're down to like one of her now kinda good 1st party controllers and one of mine, also my fully-functioning but shitty as fuck 3rd party controller with stubby arms.

Now we're in a living situation where a bunch of people are playing Nintendo 64, and we have the only good controllers.

I've talked my friend into getting a few so that people don't have to be using ours too much.

Ours are now finally showing the first signs. The noticeable white build-up, the slightly uneven resistance in different directions..

    *

So anyway, the point of this thread though is I wanna ask:

It seems like it's hard or impossible to find reasonably 'new' quality 1st party controllers. It does seem like it's possible to find controllers ranging from slightly worse than ours to slightly better than ours, in a sort of random grab bag kind of fashion, over the internet anyway.

I'm weighing my options as to whether I should:

    A) Order some 1st party controllers that claim to be in great condition over the internet.

    B) Go on a journey to far away vintage video game stores, where I can inspect and feel any controllers before buying them.

    or

    C) Are any of the 3rd party controllers which are still available new-in-packing, good enough to be worth it? Are the joy-sticks similar feeling but better working than Nintendo's? Do any of the controllers have an overall shape close enough to the original controller that I won't vomit while trying to use one?

(This © is one of the most key questions here, because it's hard to get reputable reviews on some of this crap.. [it also happens to be the only part of this entire post containing question marks...)

  6. If you really want to be ridiculous and roundabout, alter the pitch seperately after exporting (in Soundforge or something or even Edison), but before exporting, divide your project's BPM by (1+the % you're increasing the pitch by).

    e.g.

    bpm / 1.5 (33% slower)

    pitch * 1.5 (50% higher)

    = 50% higher, same speed

To actually answer your question though.. if you like being able to quickly turn up the pitch of an entire project, you're probably SoL at least with FLStudio. For one thing, you'll never get the master pitch knob to affect audio clip tracks.

  7. Well for starters using roman numerals is bad because in this particular case i read VI7 as you wrote (in A minor as you were using) as F7 not Fmaj7.

The same goes for the i/VI that you wrote, i read this as Amin/Fmaj (An A minor chord over a F major chord). If you were to write to show something being in inversion and being in the bass, for that chord you would write VI6 to indicate that it is in first inversion.

Thank you for that. Those are perfectly logical reasons.

To prophet, I've no qualms with this, with the fact that his using roman numerals may be not the best way to state it. But again, he added a clarification right after, in his initial post, naming all the chords in the sequence.

Thus I fail to see how his post did not contain all the necessary information to communicate his progression and stand by the view that you were a bit needlessly pompous and harsh with him.

  8. And LA mix probably isn't gonna happen.

Getting an upright piano moved in here at some point within the next month, but lord knows I can't find my god damn microphone stands and probably forgot most of my arrangement idea anyway. (though I did make notes...)

But yeah, probably not gonna happen.

  9. the whole point of theory is blindly following instructions that don't make as much sense as you'd like.

This is where you're wrong, and where our disagreement lies.

You treat functional harmony as a static, universal doctrine that dictates how and why certain chord structures sound appealing. This is incorrect.

Functional harmony, and music theory in general, are post-incidental studies and ways of describing discussing or analyzing music that has been written.

Theory is the study of music, and particularly its tendencies and progressions it has gone through, throughout history and in various cultures.

the chord structure is primitive. i suggested a way to make it more auditorily interesting.

A chord is not primitive or civilized. You suggested a way to make it more obviously lead to from its penultimate chord to its final chord. Whether a smoother transition is better than a more contrasted transition is not a matter of objective universal fact. It's up to the composer, and to think in every musical situation, there is only one correct compositional choice, would lead to the kind of musical blandness and sameness that we had in the Classical era. >.>

For the record, the specific example in Flying Battery Zone (I can't believe you people, have you never played Sonic?) does in fact use your version. It is in A minor and the chords from the section in question are: FMaj7, GMaj, E7, Amin (GMaj)

And that's very nice that you've done musical things. All that assuming you're the only credible person here though.. talk about pompous. I myself have written a CD of piano compositions, and in fact have sold several copies (I haven't gotten around to making another batch though, life's been hectic). Many of the tracks are on my Soundclick of ye old.

I'll just try to leave it at that and not go into the detailed story of my musical upbringing and at what age I did what things etc., because if I were to turn this into a who's-the-bigger-musical-prodigy epeen contest, I'd have my head just as far up my ass as you.

i'd like to think i know what sounds good and what doesn't.

Music theory doesn't tell you what sounds good. This is a disturbingly common misconception, made by people to whom it would be in their best interest if true, due to lack of a good ear. It (music theory) tries (keyword: tries, often succeeds, but is in fact not a proper science) to explain, after the fact, why things that got used and reused in a certain era of music, sounded good.

Your ability to tell if something sounds good should not come from your musical training. It should come from your ear.

Most of the people I've ever come across who were particularly rigid and verbose with their music theory, happened to have a terrible ear.

I haven't been studying music theory in quite some time now, but I assure you I went through all the theory training you did. 50% of it was crap then, it's crap now. If there's something that doesn't make sense in music theory, I will shove it down and rise above it. It started when I taught myself 3 against 4 using a simple math problem, after my piano teacher of the time taught it to me incorrectly. Now it's laughing at people who've never touched +III chords because they think it's not allowed to go anywhere. Speaking of which, if that chord is so horrible, why force yourself into it by only allowing harmonic minor?

To be honest, I'm still not clear on what the deal is with your whole "chord progressions are in harmonic minor" thing. Why? You said something about always having a V-i cadence. That's retarded. v-i is a cadence as well, and anyone who blocks out their ability to hear that because Bach didn't use it, is retarded.

If you have the time to listen, tell me how primitive my chords in Reminiscence are. (Just don't be unfair and judge it by the first minute and 20 seconds when it's just switching between the two chords for the intro =p).

  10. Guys, I just finished reading this thread, and.. Christ.

I knew exactly what he meant. Technically incorrect or not, I don't get how you guys could not have understood. The chords played in my head as I read them. His numerals told me quite clearly what chord progression he was referring to. I wasn't wasting time obsessing over rote-learned music theory rules and ideologies.

And prophet, you're like.. suggesting improvements to his progression and implying it to be primitive, basically. Your alternative, and it being better simply on the principle that it is closer to the functional harmony used by composers of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, is debatable to say the least.

And to speak of chords "not existing.." I almost laughed out loud. If your rigid system of labeling chords doesn't permit composing in natural minor, that's its problem.

Understanding music requires more than blindly following instructions and being condescending.

That being said, sorry, OP, none come to mind at the moment.

It looks like you've got a lot for the time being though.. haven't you had enough FMaj7 GMaj Emin Amin? heh

p.s. no one uses augmented chords? i guess you haven't listened to music in the past 150 or so years...

EDIT: Actually Brian, I just remembered one...

  11. What video card interface do you have? AGP? PCI-E?

I was under the impression I have both PCI-E and PCI, though maybe I misread.

    http://emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T%20Series&model=T6410

    http://www.computerpoweruser.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/c0501/09c01b/09c01b.asp

I definitely have PCI-E at least.

And yeah, Dhsu, I've got 1gb in there atm. Betwixt 2 cards, and it's got 2 slots, so I'd need to be replacing one of them.

Budget is whatever is good enough to be worth it for an amount small enough that I won't feel too guilty asking my girlfriend to pay for, lol. 25 is about right.

  12. I have an emachines computer with an Athlon 64 processor and the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset. So I've been just using the integrated video from that.

I'm looking to replace it with something not necessarily marvelously better, but just something used off of craigslist or such if it comes around. Just something that would have the upper hand simply in that it is an actual dedicated video card.

This being said, I don't know anything about video really.

For starters, I have this card available to me for $25: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8968067&st=graphics+card&type=product&id=1217029964768

    Worth it or not?

My main use for this is World of Warcraft. With my Radeon Xpress I get 18-25 fps on average with the video settings set mostly at minimum. It'd be nice to be able to up the settings just a tad and get above 25fps consistently.

Thanks. (and thank you to those who responded to my monitor thread too, I'm in the process of getting a replacement)

  13. This problem has been bugging the hell out of me for the past few months. I've been playing WoW, and I'm not sure if it happened before I started playing, but I don't see how it can be related, because it happens regardless of whether or not WoW is running.

    The problem is this:

Every 5-20 minutes or so, the screen will fade to about 2/3rds or 3/4s its original brightness. This permeates the desktop and any programs I might be running. After anywhere from a matter of seconds to several minutes later, it will brighten back to normal.

I am not using a laptop or anything. I have an Emachines desktop http://emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T%20Series&model=T6410 with built in ATI Radeon Xpress 200, connected to a Sony Trinitron Multiscan G200 crt monitor.

I tried about 30 dozen different Google searches, and have not been able to find anything like my problem on the internet.

Anyone have any clue what's going on?

  14. You might want to grab a super gameboy if you can find one, there was a place at a mall near where I live which had a few of them foing for about 5$ a piece and I picked one up.

They're kind of cool to have when you want to play links awakening DX on a big screen with a nifty border. Though not supporting Gameboy color games always made me sad.

Also, Super Metroid is a good one, a few years ago I went out of my way to buy a copy online for like 12 bucks and i think i got my moneys worth out of it.

Actually I was thinking Gameboy Player for my Gamecube. Seems like the better choice just from what little I know.. Unless there's something about it that sucks. Cause I would like to have the option open to play GBA games on the TV as well.

I haven't gotten too much into Metroid games in the past.. though I know Super Metroid would have to engage me more than the last one I played, Metroid Prime 3 for Wii. I had some disagreement with the controls. And I'm one of those left who still admire the (almost) lost art of two dimensional gameplay.

You might want to check Videogame Price Charts for price comparisons. The prices are just averages culled from eBay, Amazon, Half.com and a few other sources if they have it. The places you go to could be using that as a reference, but at the very least you have a barometer to determine if you're getting ripped off.

    Awesome. Thanks. =)

EDIT: Average price of Chrono Trigger is $39. I may have to rethink how badly I want to own that.. I've got $75 but most of the other things I want are cheap and I'd like to bring home a lot. =D

  15. RPGs tend to cost a hell of a lot more.

They did when they were new, and they do 15 years later.

Good to know.. I'm not into too many RPGs. The only one I would probably buy (depending on how much it is) is Chrono Trigger.

I didn't end up going to a store yet. I had a tooth extracted and I'm waiting for it to heal.

To give an idea why I need to go on a shopping spree.. I grew up with no summer jobs or allowances, and only ended up owning some of my select favorite games (plus some random filler ones).

My line-up as of right now (of prior to GCN stuff) is this (there were others, but they were lost in various ways):

    SNES:

    Super Mario All-Stars

    Super Mario World

    Super Mario Kart

    Zelda LttP

Secret of Mana (somehow I ended up with it.. technically it's my brother's but he doesn't have his own SNES)

    N64:

    Zelda OoT

    Goldeneye

    Super Mario 64

    Mario Kart 64

    BattleTanx

    Star Wars Ep I racer

    Star Wars Rogue Squadron

    Cruisin World

Pokemon Snap should still be around somewhere..

    GB/GBA:

    Pokemon Red

    Tetris

    Zelda Minish Cap

...seriously? That's all the GB games I can find at the moment. Unless you wanna count "Snoopy's Magic Show" which sucks balls and I have no memory of how I ended up with it.

Among games I seem to have lost (or in one case stupidly traded away) in the past are:

-tons of random GB games (including all the Mario lands..)

-Zelda Link's Awakening AND a replacement Link's Awakening DX which I also lost

-Duke Nukem 64 and Zero Hour

    -Majora's Mask

    -Pokemon Stadium

There's probably one or two SNES games I'm missing, but I can't remember. My SNES collection has always sucked. I didn't get it until long after its time, after I already had my N64. I had already played through most SNES games I've played through during rentals, so my collection has ended up being basically Zelda and Mario.

Speaking of Zelda and Mario, of my dozen or so GCN games, like 2/3rds of them are Zelda or Mario something.. It's funny. like 4 mario games and 4 more zelda discs as well..

    Sorry for TL;DR.

I'm still trying to figure out which games I'm gonna get.. I do want Duke Nukem back even if it's a shitty game just cause I liked it, but I'm a little reluctant cause I last saw it just months ago and have hope it could still be in a box somewhere. I thought about Megaman X.. but now I'm thinking the PS2 Megaman collection is probably the way to go for that..

Partly I'm just planning on browsing and being surprised, but any recommendations are welcome.

  16. Can't be more than 10 dollars.

It's been a while since I've been to those stores.

There's also Game It Video which may also have vintage games.

Haven't been since it used to be Game Square. So I don't know if they changed their ways.

Yeah.. that's what I'm inclined to expect the prices are. I'm just a bit confused because my brother once purchased Secret of Mana for $40. Was the shopkeep just an asshole or is that just a really expensive game for some reason?
