  1. Another thing to consider, with synth edit creations in particular, is CPU consumption. SE is notoriously inefficient. I went to a website for an emulator of some really cheap synth, like a NES or SID chip, or something. Consumption on an Athlon XP 2000+ was something like 12% :P

    That's the main reason why I tend to ignore SE creations like the plague. Some worth keeping though. I think I have a couple in my collection :)

  2. It's not 'nigger,' it's 'nigga,' a word you'll hear all too often around black people. They use it the same way surfer-boys use 'dude.'

    So what happens if the KKK adopt it, will the black people stick an 'h' on the end? Will "niggah" be the new non-racist connotation? Please, do me a favour. nigga = nigger. You either think it's a racist word or not. If you want to use it then fine, if you don't, that's fine too. But lets not go around kidding ourselves here.

  3. lol, this brought a smile to my face. The production was good and, although the vocals sounded a bit ameturish in the way they were recorded, that kinda helped its personal feel that I think hip hop benefits from. I thought it was a lot of fun. The cheeky chorus particularly amused me. It reminded me a little of Outkast actually. :)

    Addressing the song's contravsersial aspect for a moment:

    To be honest I get tired of bad language in general more and more now. It's the sort of thing I grew out of when puberty stopped and I think it's a bit sad that most artists, but hip hop rappers in particular, still think its *cool* to swear. That said, I didn't take exception to the word "nigger" specifically. Like Pretzel says in his intro, it's not the word but the person who uses it. There are plenty of words around that describe black people, just as there are plenty of words to describe everyone else. I hear that the yanks refer to us brits as "limeys." Rather amusingly, and somewhat ironically, Nelson Mandella caused a bit of a problem with his continuous use of the word "coloureds" to describe black people. Media types were scratching their heads over the best way to quote him because "coloureds" along with "niggers" is on the list or racist words not to be used by the media.

    Personally I look forward to the day when we emerge from this pc garbage and remember what racism actually is. Then we can throw these words around without all the racist angst that accompanies them.

    Cyanide is pretty nice for the price. :) I could not find a use for it in my type of music, but electronica mixers will probably.

    Yeah, I just inserted it (v2) in one of my tracks that I wasn't happy with the sound of. I think it's an improvement, but I'll see tomorrow after I've gotten the sound of it out of my head.

    There are quite a number of cool plugins there actaully. I downloaded a few of them :D

  5. yay, something that's not techno, chrono trigger or FF! :) Managing to keep all three of those out of the piece deserves a pat on the back. :D It's a really tastefully done piece, this. The evolving pads at the begining are great and support the piano really well which I was pleasantly pleased with. Most remixes I hear using piano usually suffer from the "midi" effect, with not enough effort put into the performance. But this sounds like it was played or sequenced by a pianist who understands dynamics. There was a moment where I'd have liked to have heard a stronger cresc though.

    The transition at 1:50 from new age to orchestral was interesting. I wonder if there should have been a brief pause here for dramatic effect, or some other form of anouncement. Either way, the music is excellently arranged. I guess this is where the greek sound starts to creep in. I'm not entirely sure what Greek music sounds like, but this sounds more like it as the tune progresses. :P

    It's all tastefully done. Subtle, but with enough punch to give it emotion. I don't know if it wasn't just a little too restrained though. It did feel like it was holding back. The balance here certainly works, and it certainly pays to stay within limits rather than go over the top, but I wonder if it might not have had more passion if the crescendos were just a little louder and more reinforced. Perhaps our hero who's in love is just a little too shy to admit his feelings just yet ;)

    Either way it's a great remix, one of the best recent submissions I've heard here for a while now. I have a spot for GL's music anyway, but Freemind has really added an element that was really complimentary.

  6. A nice effort. Everything fitted together well and the producing was pretty good but the tune did nothing for me, I'm afraid. I found it quite predictable and shallow. There were moments that didn't flow very well, like the transition from bass to lead at 0:30. Other parts were rather more successful and felt quite good. The powertools thing was a nice idea but it felt a little restrained. If he'd really gone all out, complimenting the power tools by screwing up the rest of it, he would probably have sold it to me better.

    A nice attempt, competently mixed but with few surprises, it felt like it was tentatively mixed. Plunge in at the deep end and I think it'll do your music the world of good :)

  7. Yeah, I enjoyed this (listening to it now). I usually get put off by the overused house beat but I don't really notice it so much in this mix. Of course I love the vocals, I knew I would as soon as pretzel mentioned them - I'm a sucker for that sorta thing. They add a great deal of fun to the piece. Incidentally, Coutney Pine also uses Street Fighter vocals in one of his tracks so you're in good company :)

  8. I agree about the flute (if that's what it is - it sounds more like a piccolo to me). The trouble with samples is that they often allow very little in the way of expression. I think this is one instance where a synthesiser would have been a better choice. Don't forget to add velocity either. It's sounding a bit sequenced the way you have it.

    The arrangement was really great. The whole thing was tight and produced really well too, I thought, although the piccolo may have been just a little on the loud side. It flowed really nicely throughout - I particularly liked where the vocals came in - but I was a bit disappointed about the ending. It sounds like this is a demo that's been ended prematurely. Maybe you ran out of ideas in the middle of the song so just resorted to using fade-out tactics =P. It would have been nice for it to have come to a more definitive conclusion instead. Maybe you could have it end in the syle of a jig? Might be apropriate given the time signature and the folky style :)

  9. Oh sure they have their uses, they wouldn't be used so much otherwise. We're just saying that it's easy to use it inapropriately. It's pointless reaching for a compressor when all you need to do is lower the level of your fader. If you want to apply a characteristic to a sound, and you think a compressor will help you achieve this, then by all means use one. But just for the sake of it? This is bad producing.

    It's also worth remembering that some compressors automatically apply make-up gain which will keep the level of the output equal to the input. So you'll still get clipping anyway if you don't turn down the fader.

  10. Ah, that's better! Listening to it on my hifi. Well I have to say, the guitar synth fooled me, but never mind that :P

    It's a great track but the lead guitar has too much presence. I'm guessing it's because of the thousands of processors you seem to have used on it. It's very sharp and heavy on the mid and high freq. It takes over the whole mix. The bass gets left out and I can hardly hear the kick drum for it. You might want to apply some mid-range cut with an eq and maybe process the kick drum too.

    Otherwise, cool stuff :D

  11. Another cool remix. Unfortunately I can't really apreciate it, or coment on any aspect of it very easily, since I'm listening on computer speakers. Anyway, I'll be back with my own system in a couple of days and this is one track I'll be making sure to download straight to my hdd. I'll post more thoughts once I've had a proper listen :)

  12. I'm not sure what to make of this. Those cymbal hits could go as could the bassline. They are unnecessarily trancy and make the song sound a bit unsure what it's supposed to be. There's nothing wrong borrowing from different genres but they should still complement each other and I don't think that the bassline works with the rest of the piece. I've never been a fan of the rather unsubtle way trance music reaches its climaxes anyway and if I were taking elements of trance to put in my music the cymbal hits are something I'd be sure to leave behind.

    The cymbal hits aside I really enjoyed the percussion in this and the performance of the music was good too. I presume that at least some of it was played rather than sequenced. It certainly sounds like it had the human touch. If I was going to be picky I'd say that the epiano is not quite up to the task for a lead role but that's a fairly minor point.

    All in all, I'd say this was a nice piece but, although I applaud breaking restraints and mixing across the board, I don't think the trance elements worked so well here.

  13. I've been trying to move over to linux recently, with limited success. It all hangs on me being able to connect to the internet and my modem isn't very well supported. But I sense the linux music scene is on the horizon now and I want to get in on the act!

    I think the most promising program for me, at the moment is Rosegarden. Like you say, it had a host of dependancies that prevented me from installing it last time I had a try. When I've got some free time I'll give it another go. I'm also looking forward to see midi implementation in Ardour, which looks really good but, at the moment, is only really well suited as a harddisc recorder.

  14. I think I've got the general jist of it now and I'm starting to see where the electronica style comes from :P

    It's a fun piece of software and I think it'll be fun for chiptune like music, but other than high aliased "digital" sounds I'm not counting on doing much else with this. I'm not about to take Cubase back to the store anyway! ;)

    Writing melodies is surprisingly easy and fun, but I think it's real limitation comes in the form of automation. Unless I still haven't found the feature that allows you to calculate smooth changes in, say, filter cut-off, it's pretty limited from that point of view... unless you don't mind typing in every single midi value, that is

  15. And a Buzz tutorial would be very nice. It seems to be a very powerful program, but I've never really taken the time to get into it. I'd love to see a tutorial that shows you how to make a complete song (that doesn't suck) from start to finish. If anyone has a link for such a thing already, please post it.

    Buzz comes with a tutorial. I was using it the other day. Well I've heard so much about it that I thought I'd better dl it and see what it's all about. It seems like quite a fun little tool. Not quite sure where it'll fit into my music making process yet though :)

  16. Reading the build up to this, I was expecting something boring and repetative so I'm quite surprised at what I heard.

    This absolutely has a sense of progression and climax with the chimes and piano sitting back in the mix at first, providing an ostinato, and some variation over the top, slowly moving to the front where they eventually dominate and finish in a dramatic climax.

    I thought this was a well realised ambient work. Personally I think it would have benifitted from some bass and maybe even a meaty sawtooth, again to fill out the low end and help out the strings on crecendos.

    But the arrangement itself I think was great and the attention given to the instruments that were present really payed off.

    gen adds (15/12/03): It's funny how ones perceptions change. I listened to this again today and now I fail to see where the bass and saw that I recommended would go :P

  17. A really nice, tranquil piece. I particularly like the care taken on the flute patch to expressively add tremolo, vibrato and pitch bend.

    The only possible complaint I might have is that the drumkit sounded hard panned. This is probably because I was listening through headphones though. Not the best medium for analyzing a stereo mix :P

    So yeah, ignore my false alarm ^_^

    Nice work on this. I think it's acomplished everything that could be expected of it :)

  18. Can I suggest that some threads are made sticky, since they often come up again and again. The FL Studio thread can fall into this category, although it usually gets enough posts to remain on the front page. But also a thread dealing with sf/sample requests would be highly appreciated. I'm sure other members can also think of threads which should be sticky...
