  1. Alright, nice vocals! Solid backing from Flexstyle creates a great soundscape here, however there are parts that sound a bit empty, and I think that creates a strange feel to the song. Particularly the part leading up to "you gotta help me fix..." (basically the whole part from "You see sky...") just sounds too quiet and completely out of character for the song. One other thing I'm not a fan of is the note you lead off with when you sing "...siiiiiide". It just sounds off to me... maybe intentionally to make it sound more interesting, however for the chilled feel of the song it doesn't sit right with me. Try pitching it up a few semitones and/or doing a different vocal harmony there, and I'd definitely change the pre-chorus mixing to something a little more prominent and you should be good to go :)

Those parts of the song you mentioned are exactly what I didn't get time to touch on. Got this up and running in 3 days, and with New Years, and deadline, some stuff had to fall by the wayside. But rest assured, it'll be one of the first things I do.

Also that note you were talking about, I know what you mean... it's a little more exposed than it should be - another thing I didn't have time to address. I completely flattened that note in Melodyne to sound almost entirely robotic, however when I recorded it, it had a lot of dynamics to it. I may re-record that particular part of the vocals, or I'm thinking a bit more verb on it would do it wonders. I'll be sure to fix it though.

Thanks for the feedback! Definitely food for thought! :D

    MM9 'Wily 2 - We're the Robots'

    MM&B 'Cold Man' -

So this is my final track for the Wily Gauntlet 2011. It's a bit different from my previous entries. This time I went for a moreof a pretty, down-tempo, chilled vocal electronic ballad.

I've done some pretty heavy vocal processing this time around - I wanted to go for a more Eiffel 65/E.S. Posthumus sound in the vocals - it lends itself quite well to the mood of the track. This is not complete yet. Transitions need a lot of work still, the chorus needs some amping up and drama still, but yeah, it's a full length track so far.

I was running out of time this round, so Flex came up with an awesome Bubbly synth solo in the middle of the track for me, as well as doing some really lush trance-style pads for me for the chorus and middle sections. THANK TEAM M8! Verses use the chordal structure of 'We're the Robots' but the vocal lines and the synth solo are a heavily modified take on the main melody of the Cold Man theme. Also, Both source tunes have been pitched up 2 so that it sits in the sweet spot of my vocal range.

Also, thanks again to Jason Covenant for giving the track some volume again! Thanks man :D

I really hope you guys like this. The lyrics aren't as cheesy as my previous entry for the compo.

So yeah, a lot of work still to to to polish this up, but all the basic elements are well and truly there!

    Here's the lyrics:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Broken ties...

    Broken ties...

    I see black and white-

a part of the great divide.

What is plain for you to see is not so easy for me.

You see a sky, and I see blue.

I see a river running but can't wade through.

What hits my eyes won't hit my head.

    You gotta help me fix

    Broken ties.

This disconnect I'm feeling has got me reeling inside.

Can't handle my emotions, so help me

    'Cause baby tonight - Woah-oh

    We're running out of time - Woah-oh

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for taking the time to check this out! Lemme know what you think!

And Happy New Year EVERYONE!!! :)

  3. Done and submitted. I left a breakdown in there pretty naked, but otherwise, it's decent enough. I'm really happy with it, and considering the little time I've had this week to spend on it, I'm actually surprised that it's turned out so well. Flex gave me a hand with the mix, so it's feat. Flexstyle this week :D

Get ready for a pretty chilled down-tempo ballad with some pretty Eiffel65-ish vocal processing. Can't wait to hear the rest :D

  4. My track should be finished tonight. I'm so stoked at how it's turning out. Be scared...

    EDIT:

Also, here's the lyrics for my track. Just because, well, just 'cause ;)

    Broken ties...

    Broken ties...

    I see black and white-

a part of the great divide.

What is plain for you to see's not so easy for me.

You see a sky, and I see blue

I see a river running but can't wade through.

What hits my eyes won't hit my head.

    You gotta help me fix

    Broken ties.

The disconnect I'm feeling has got me reeling inside,

Can't handle my emotions, so help me

    'Cause baby tonight, oh-oh

We're running out of time, oh-oh

  5. Curse you, Rexy! You took my... BLAH BLAH BLAH... AND you have an incredible mix to boot.

I concur on the incredible mix. Truly my favourite this week. Amazing stuff - it could possibly be my favourite mix of yours ever.

    EDIT:

My mix for this round is coming along nicely. Since it's my last mix on my own, I'm throwing in some nods to the previous mixes in the comp, all with some Eiffel 65-ish vocal processing and a more more down-tempo, contemporary sound. Not a LinnDrum in sight, but it's still melodic as ever.

I'm really excited about this round... REALLY EXCITED!!! :D

  6. Yeah, really you guys have done a great job! It's hard enough to arrange and produce a song in a week, but then to go and write & record vocals on top of that, I can't even imagine.

Same goes for Brandon & Rexy, AMT, and Xarnax42 and some of the others who've done vocal remixes for the compo so far!

Thanks! I am also stoked at what everyone has done. I've got so many mixes that I adore out of this whole thing from EVERYONE, that's it's kind of overwhelming at just how much awesome music has just appeared week in, week out. And we've still got more to come! Brilliant.

Oh and I've heard Flex's mix for this week. WOWSERS! It's so, sooo good. BRING IT ONNNNNNNN!!!! GRR!!!!

  7. Don't understand all the complaining about this week's Wily Theme. As arrangers you should all be pretty chuffed; this theme has an incredibly simple melody and chord progression which lends itself really well to basically anything you want to do.

Was thinking the same myself - I would have been cheering if I were able to do this weeks mix. Would have fit my cheesy tendencies to a tee :D

  8. It's out now, and it's amazing.

Picked it up for my Xperia Play for $1.99, and I'm quite literally stunned at the quality and care taken in porting this game over. Feels kinda surreal having Sonic CD on my phone.

Both Soundtracks (with new looping points for the tracks!) ...

    Leaderboards and Achievements...

    Widescreen graphics...

    60fps Special Stage...

    Just so, so great.

    Fantastic stuff.

  9. Just saying, this deserved WAY more votes than it got in this particular WCRG round. The vocals are just...chilling. That's the only way I can describe it :D

I can't say I have any criticism to offer...it's got sort of a lo-fi quality to it but it just works SO well for the song itself.

Can't wait to hear the finished product :)

Geez man, thanks a lot! That means a whole heap to me! Glad you like the vocals - I'm so uber-happy with the way they turned out in this track, it's not funny! :D

Cold Man (Mega Man & Bass SNES):

    Wily Tower 2 (Mega Man 8 PSX/SAT):

So this was one of my entries for the Wily Castle Remix Gauntlet that I got sounding pretty good, but didn't QUITE get to finishing. You'll notice that from listening to the WIP. But I reckon it's at about 80% done, and though it sounds a little basic in parts, I'm working on that.

    BUT! GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

I've asked Level 99 to do some guitar for me, and being the busy (and totally awesome) guy he is, agreed to feature in this track with me, with a solo and everything! So YAY!

So I'll be posting any progress we make in here. Just bear in mind that the WIP above is pretty much fully mastered, so any subsequent updates may not sound as bombastic as it does until it's done.

But it's at a very close to complete stage at the moment, so it's sounding pretty decent I think.

The track is very much equal parts New Order, and any 80's synth-pop/euro-disco outfits you could think of. Lyrics are PURE CHEESE, and not at all game related. Also used some fantastic Linn LinnDrum samples I found for the percussion, and most of the synths are either Juno 106 and Yamaha DX7 samples. Also, stole a little sample from the Jap/Euro Sonic CD to use in my transitions. My good friend Jason Covenant provided some mastering wizardry to make it a little louder than I had it earlier, too, so thanks for that man! :D

I've pretty much taken the Wily Tower 2 theme from MM8 and adjusted it to fit over the main chord progression Cold Man theme from MM&B. So it's a relatively even mash-up of the two themes. Vocals are done and dusted, so they won't be changed. They MAY feature in more of the track, albeit in a chopped up, altered form, but the main vocal sections are done. I'm also gonna vary the percussion up a bit, but I'll wait till I get some guitar before I do that. Might add some 80's toms, cowbell and PERHAPS some claps. Maybe :D A little more instrumentation, some polishing of the transitions, and work on the arpeggio's is on the cards too.

    Lyrics are HERE:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    VERSE:

I'm saying that it wasn't ever right.

I find myself repeating things a thousand times,

and I'm tired of never getting through to you.

    (Oh oh oh oh)

You couldn't care where this road will take you

Could build you up, or tear you down or maybe break your fall.

But I'm up against walls you build to keep me out.

    CHORUS:

    I'm falling (I'm falling)

    I'm falling down(I'm falling)

And I can't waste my time on you.

It all feels wrong when the trust is gone.

    You're calling (you're calling)

You're calling out my name, but it's too late.

    So goodbye.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyhoo, lemme know what you think! :D

  11. Slightly off topic but related to my voting- AkumajoBelmont, do you have an album of these 80's synthpop songs? Because I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Also, voted! Looking forward to the new round :D

Nah, I don't... But I've seriously been considering doing a remix EP of a few songs... I'd love to do a few more tracks in the style... Its a style I grew up listening to a lot. I know its cheesy as hell, but yeah, I'm not worried, as its fun as hell to do and it has its place. Like I said, I grew up listening to all this stuff, so for me its a normal and legit as anything out there. But yeah... EP on the cards I think :)

  12. Don't forget about Unsung Heroes. That's basically a description of the entire project is underrepresented RPG game musics.

So there's two separate issues then: regular mixposts vs. album mixposts, and not having enough mixposts from obscure games. The latter is always an issue but people will inevitably remix what they want. There will always be more folks remixing Mega Man 2 and FFVII than there will be DarXide, Rad Racer II, or Stunt Race FX. AND we have PRC for that stuff as well, which I fully support because it challenges people to work with things they might not have heard otherwise. DJP's idea is a good one as well.

I only really chimed in to plug VROOM! :D
