Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post, but this is a bit of an "art" project to me. I've been making a VGM "Fake Book" (it's like a compilation of charts with rhythm notation, chord charts, and two monophonic voices harmonized in a typical jazz arrangement style), and I wanted to share the progress with OCR in case anyone could get some use out of it. I suppose, in some sense, this is my "visual art project" relating to game music. It is a labor of love, so it is incomplete but entries are always being added to it. I'm in the phase of adding the finalized products to the book (many pieces are already transcribed/reharmonized and just lacking final draft) and would love some feedback from the community. I'm not making the whole book available to the public, but I'd like to share some excerpts and see what you think! Table of contents: I've included a .pdf file of "Dark World" from A Link to the Past. You'll notice that my sheets are made into two main sections: "Head" Think of the top line as the main melody, second line as optional harmony/counterpoint. "Vamp" The top line is what most of the accompaniment is providing in the source recordings, but re-voiced/re-harmonized in some instances that I found necessary. I didn't just sit with these pieces and add "7"s to every chord to make it "jazz". The basslines are an attempt to make a 1-1 transference of some bass lines if I find them particularly iconic (it may not be up to me to judge), but may be simplified in some places for "ease of use". The notes are written with an "X" instead of a traditional note-head because I wanted these to indicate rhythm as well, not just pitch. There are chords notated above the top line of the "Vamp". I believe them all to be accurate and have taken some liberties (but nothing too out there) where I heard implied harmony. I was mostly looking out for improvisers and guitarists. The idea was to have the pieces as informative as possible, while also making a clean and comprehensive chart that is easy to sight read. You can take this info and rearrange it for so many mixed groups! Here's the Great Fairy Fountain as a jazz waltz. Just got a new bass VST so finally I have all 3 (piano, bass, and drums - the triforce of jazz). This style is really fun, and I like to think I've gotten a little intimate with this sound lately. I'm trying to take a pretty traditional trio approach here, mostly influenced by the trio album Red Garland's Piano. A somewhat obvious influence for the waltz is Bill Evans. Taking some notes from past submissions about structure problems. I think this one has that all fixed up and has a pretty clear structure. Hi, everyone! On August 31 from 6-11pm EDT, five VGM jazz groups are teaming up to bring you FREE PLAY, a free, international music festival that will be streaming on Twitch. Super Mario World 'Super Mario's Sleigh Ride' Sorry about not getting to the late Christmas Eve mixes earlier I've been with my family and playing with all of my new stuff. Now, to the ReMix - What can I say? It's just some REALLY well done live video game music action It's really fun to listen to to. The OneUp Mushrooms cover several Super Mario World tunes here. It's a must download Super highly recommended. I respect these guys a whole lot. I've always dreamed of playing live video game music with some buds, and these guys fulfilled my dream, but for themselves. It's all worth it, though!

A WIP of this remix, originally this was a jazz quartet version, but it was getting dated (and albeit not that good) Now, a jazz trio + hip hop elements, this melody is fantastic. Use of block chords in the beginning, followed by some close voiced chord movement by the second chorus. Going to work the arrangement into a solo section and then back to the head. Hello OCRemix! I made a megaman 2 remix of the password theme. I got the idea from my tutor who's helping me out with all things music theory and production. I thought I would also post it here, and see if any of you would enjoy it or have some advice for a budding remixer/composer. What I was going for is an improv session with the source material while trying to go into different places as well with it. I don't see too many remixes or covers for the Virtua Fighter series. Maybe I'm the only one that thinks the music is awesome haha. I spent a lot of time burning through quarters with this one at the arcades and on the Saturn. Anyways, any critiques or comments are always appreciated. Peace

Sup everybody. So I wanted to try out some new sounds and make something more chill than I normally have. I pictured a star lit sky when I made this. Maybe it could be used for a platformer/side scroller with a night stage or in outer space. Arigato simply means thank you in Japanese as I found inspiration from other artists to make this. Peace.

I remade the ending credits theme from the original Marvel vs Capcom. Not a remix but not a cover either so I called it reborn. I'm also not submitting this here. Hi, everyone! I recently completed an important phase of a long-term jazz/vgm arrangement project that I have going on called The Hard Modes. I wanted to share it with you all and get your feedback. I premiered 7 arrangements at a live show a couple of weeks ago and recorded the show using a Zoom H2 recorder as well as a no-frills camcorder. I'll be posting the tracks individually over time, but if you like what you hear you can always check out the other parts of the set through SoundCloud or YouTube (though we didn't capture 2 of the arrangements on video). First up is my arrangement of Austin Wintory's I Was Born For This from Journey, which was actually the last tune of our set. Some notes: The sound quality isn't great on either medium, but the sound recording sounds better than the video. That's me on tenor sax! The throwback near the end of the tune was a surprise even for the band; the spot just called for an open solo. My original arrangement was inspired by Ornette Coleman's work, although to get the work together for the show we had to simplify some of the sections a bit, which is why I labeled this a Work in Progress (ultimately, the arrangement should be freer than it is--we'll get there!). Finished up a 2nd video using footage from our recording session from late April. This time we play Shoji Meguro's "Beneath the Mask" from Persona 5, which is both a favorite of ours to play as well as a crowd favorite from our shows. Over the last year I've digested more of Meguro's catalog than any other video game composer--I'm excited to have completed this particular work and released it for your enjoyment. Also, similar to my "Corridors of Time" arrangement, I snuck in a quote from another one of this game's tracks, as well--let me know if you catch it!

Hey, everyone! Late last year I posted some live clips from my VGM/jazz group, The Hard Modes. Since then I've written a bunch of new arrangements for the group that we've been playing locally, and about a month ago we recorded some of our repertoire. I wanted to share the first of the bunch with you--the beloved "Corridors of Time" from Chrono Trigger, written by Yasunori Mitsuda: I never really intended to arrange this tune, especially because it seems like a lot of people cover it (and cover it well!). But, I kept hearing it while I was at MAGFest this year and was infected by the groove so much that I felt like I had to give making something unique a shot. The resulting arrangement is pretty straight forward with the exception of some harmonic variation and the incorporation of 3 additional Chrono Trigger melodies therein. Ahh, Secret of Mana, the game that made me want to become a musician at the tender age of seven... it was my introduction to prog-rock. This one's not done, but is far enough along that I felt comfortable sharing. I was going for some mildly-psychedelic jazz-rock, to set the mood for chasing rabites after dark (and maybe a few cocktails). I haven't made an intro or outro, and the middle part is kind of lacking at the moment. Also, the mix was done on some low-end headphones while my nicer ones sit atop the ever-growing fix-it pile. I'm sure my complete lack of jazz background is apparent with that horn arrangement, but I'm learning as I go. I need a break from this one for a couple days, but I hope to finish it up and mix it by this time next week. In the meantime, please enjoy, and don't hesitate to leave some constructive criticism (or just be brutal if that's your thing, it's all appreciated). Thanks! Follow the white rabite

Debuted this arrangement back on 9/30 with my jazz/VGM group, The Hard Modes (I'm playing sax). I counted it in a hair too fast and ultimately rushed the melody--the groove definitely could have benefitted from us laying back a bit more. My excuse is going to be that this was the second-to-last tune of the show and I was amped up from how the night had gone to that point Also, fun fact: the groove was influenced by Bernard Purdie's work on Steely Dan's Home at Last.
