I also agree with DarkeSword.

I'm glad we're trying to make Sonic not do what he was originally meant to do: run through the damn stage as FAST as possible. A big-ass battle sword? I'll play Zelda if I want to slash shit.

Amen. Why does Sega HAVE to make Sonic's adventures so damn complicated? He went from trying to save his little animal friends from turning into robots and just collecting rings and emeralds, to saving the city from a giant mutant jelly creature, to saving the world from a giant crashing satellite stuck on the ass of a giant monster, and so forth...

I think if they produced a game that pretty much went back to Sonic's old roots from the glory days of SEGA Genisis, but used the graphics processing power of today's generation of gaming systems, they could completly turn the Sonic franchise around.

In other words, simply toning down the epic scope of the games and making it more of an adventure rather than a doomsday scenario. ...Though to be fair, the Death Egg presented a similar doomsday scenario to the space station. Well, except about the part of the giant monster.

...Seriously though. Adventure, not self-serious epic. That's what we really need.

Believe it or not, I think that's what they tried to do with Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Heroes was just whatthefuck, and I lost my faith after that. But the Sonic Adventures were a serious attempt to bring Sonic into 3D, and personally I don't think they were bad. The mere fact that they tried innovation beyond running through a level was enough to interest me.

Imagine if Sega had never gone 3D and instead churned out Sonic games that were like the previous ones. They'd be derided for same old, same old, never taking chances and trying new things. Unfortunately, they've hit the opposite extreme.

This is true too. While I'm certainly a big fan of the old 2-D outings, truthfully, Sonic's leap into 3-D was inevitable. Fan demand would've led to it one way or the other. Whether we would've gotten a better product is debatable.

And yes, Sega gets credit for trying new things. I don't fault them for trying Sonic Heroes, for example. I do fault them for not polishing it. I don't fault them for trying the epic storylines Adventures 1 and 2 used. But in the long run, it encouraged poor, unbelievable "extreme" writing. Really, the issues all stem from terrible quality control.

There are three methods to creating great games from ideas: Trying new things, reinventing old ones to make them seem new, or polishing existing ideas to a mirror sheen. The problem is, all three paths require quality control, care, and attention to detail; something that Sonic Team has shown to lack since the beginning of the 3-D era, and has continued to slip on since.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of situation. This is especially true if the company is all about the bottom line rather than putting out a good product. And let's face it, in the real world, the bottom line matters most. For better or worse, Sonic has enough brand loyalty that he'll continue to move games until he's dead and buried underneath a concrete block. Only thing we can do is to hope that Sega suddenly remembers the idea of quality control and exercises good judgment in fixing what's broken. ...It may happen.

I've been pretty disillusioned with Sonic games nowadays... it's like they're trying too hard in one way while not trying hard in another... I guess that I'm speaking of when they make their products look good, but they end up tasteless like plastic fruit.

It may have something to do with the staff. Shit, if I made a game, it would take time, but peeps would be busting nuts on the release dates.

You sound like someone who should make their own series. Idk if you are good at programming or art, but hey, take this as encouragement.

For anyone who thinks that Sonic hasn't been in a rut the past few years, I'd like for you to explain the travesty called Sonic 2006.

I really don't trust their games these days as they're usually rushed and end up with exciting glitches like boosting into your own bullets from the motorcycle or taking damage just by driving a hovercraft, jumping into an enemy only to fall to your death, breakdancing to death whenever you run into a wall during the mach speed section, and numerous stages that can take 15 or more tedious minutes.

You're both wrong, because this whole thing's a hoax. It will be revealed that this game is actually a sequel to Sonic Spinball, because it's combining Sonic with this...

For some reason I find Sonic with a sword in his hand really stupid, but think that a dual-wielding Knuckles is pretty awesome. Yeah, I guess I'm biased somewhere in there *knocks on head*.

So judging from that awesome post NeoForte posted updating us on some of the gameplay elements of Black Knight, it'll play like a regular 3D Sonic...except with a sword, no? Hmm...interesting. I still don't think giving a weapon to a hedgehog is a good idea, a lot of people, with this argument, usually refer to the disaster that was Shadow the Hedgehog. *sighs* First the werewolf, now a sword? Why can't Sonic just be...Sonic?
