Underrated Game Soundtracks

One thing I have noticed with video game music is that only certain video game franchises are recognized as having great music (mega man, final fantasy etc)

Basically, what games do you guys have with great soundtracks that you feel didn't get the attention they deserved?

I'll start by saying silver surfer for the nes - the game was way too hard, but the music was one of the best soundtracks the nes had to offer.

Wow. That Silver Surfer song was bad-ass!

U.N. Squadron does not get enough love here. The songs weren't terribly long or complex, but damn are they catchy! And they really set the mood of a Top Gun type game. I was so excited when the Smash Brothers played "Enemy Airforce" from U.N. Squadron at MAGFest

Lemmings 3D: the only game I've bought for the soundtrack (although the game is not bad). Skip forward to 8:03 to hear my favorite song in the game:

But the whole soundtrack is excellent, a lot of great songs. Planning on remixing a track from it pretty soon.

Journey to Silius' soundtrack is pretty damn good from the songs I've heard from it, especially for the NES. Makes me want to play the game.

Tim and Geoff Follin did the music. No wonder it's so awesome.

I am such a sucker for good 8-bit music, I think this is the only place that doesn't think that's insane.

I'm a bit of a fan of the music from the original ecco the dolphin and tides of time. (not the CD/PC version)

Edit: Here's an exampley

Most people seem to only know of and remix the CD/PC/Game Gear version's of the ecco games, which is really disappointing to me, because I prefer the original music. (original music fits the game much better in the case of megadrive vs cd...)

Here's one for Tides of Time

Tekken 2.

Seriously.

Tekken 2 had the best soundtrack in the series (Well, I'm only familiar up to TTT)! I was disappointed when they changed the music style. Yoshimitsu's theme is so beautiful, but so is this:

One time I stayed up all night working on a high school art project and all the while I listened to the Tekken 2 OST (I think I had headphones rigged up to the PSX or something like that).

One game that is virtually unknown is Spider: The Videogame. Great music and a bizarre storyline, "The mind of a genius. The body of a spider. A mortally wounded scientist accidentally implants his consciousness in a nano-tech marvel-a cybernetic spider. Now shrunk to the size of a bug you must fight to stay alive.".

Awesome soundtrack!

Then again, it is Capcom we're talking about, and most of the time the music in their games is pretty good. There's exceptions of course, but most of the time, they deliver the value in both gameplay and audio.

I love 8-bit music, I just respect it a lot for some reason, it doesn't sound bad quality to my ears at all, doesn't grate on them like with some people. I just love it, and the lack of fancy instruments meant that they actually had to make the music really good. Too many people these days hide behind their fancy sounds if you know what I mean.

My favorites so far are Journey to Silius and Silver Surfer.

I'm surprised these aren't up here yet, however maybe it's because they aren't under-rated, they've gotten plenty of praise over the years.

Here's my somewhat out of nowhere contribution, I had this game as a kid, and while the music isn't amazing it's fun and made the game enjoyable, I use to play it all the time.

Well, video game music as a whole is a good listen as the majority of it is based on a strong and memorable melody which has a knack of sticking in your head when you hear it. Also the simplicity of it makes it easy on the ears on my opinion. I have actually tried to compose with in 8-bit in the past, and its a very different way of composing, as you have to make do with such limited hardware. You don't have to worry to much about mixing so all your energy I find goes into the arrangement.

Anyway off-topic...

Another underrated soundtrack

Edit: I just have to say that the spider music is awesome :P

shadow madness, there weren't many tracks that i could find on youtube since shadow madness isn't widely known, however its one of the most underated games of all time cause of its graphics however it did provide a dark atmosphere which the soundtracks blended in so well that you could say the music fit perfectly into the game's theme....

edit: god even the battle themes were epic and dark or shallow

embeded doesn't work for second video, so you'll have to click on the video and get directed to the actual site on youtube to listen to it

One of the first remixes I ever downloaded from here was "Feena Flow" from Ys... and all these years later it's still the only Ys remix on here. Ys, for crying out loud!

And really the same goes for all of Falcom's games. The quality of the Gurumin soundtrack really surprised me... still no remixes yet, even though it got a US release. :(

Even their really obscure games have awesome music!
