Help finding a sample

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to name a sample that I keep hearing everywhere (or figure out how to make it / where to find it.) It is used in like 99% of hardcore techno songs...

I'll just try to provide some examples

- The synth is basically used throughout the song, but at 0:44 the chorus synth comes in, and at 1:26 it gets really fuzzy (is that just a low pass filter used?)

- 0:33 is where the synth comes in (again with only low frequencies) then at 1:00 the chorus synth (without a low pass filter) comes in.

So basically, I've played with 3x Osc to try to get it, but my knowledge of sound engineering is like a baby's.

I would appreciate it if anyone who knows where I can get this synth or how to make it with basic FL 8 plugins .

The first example is a simple saw wave. It has some compression on it to give it a punchy attack, and lots of effects like reverb and delay, but it's not really filtered much. The timbre changing at :44 is because of a band-reject (or "notch") filter with an automated cutoff. At 1:26, it's a different synth entirely. The new synth is actually a LOT of saw waves, maybe somewhere between 6 and 11, layered together in unison. They are VERY VERY slightly detuned (~0.5 to 1.5 cents) and have a very fast LFO applied to the coarse tuning, with minimal depth.

:33 is a classic supersaw. It consists of lots of layered saw waves (unison), except these are detuned much more, more like 20-30 cents. At :33, the sound is heavily filtered with a lowpass filter, and an envelope is on it controlling the cutoff of the filter. The cutoff is then raised as the buildup continues.

First you should familiarize yourself with the basics of synthesis. DJ Redlight has a tutorial on this in the Guides & Tutorials forum. Then, get a vst like Synth1 (free from kvraudio.com) which will help produce this kind of sound. 3xOsc is not good for it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok so I got too excited when I heard this song, and after playing with synth1 (which is my new favorite thing ever) I still am seeking an answer to a question...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a19Kw_NltSI

:24 - 1:10

So how does the synth sound so "clean" from :24-:36 ? I can tell it is under a lowpass filter which is slowly as it gets to the unfiltered synth at 1:10.

My question is, how do I get a saw synth to sound that clean - when I run it under a lowpass filter (using Fruity Free Filter) it sounds more like I am underwater than I am cutting off high frequencies.

As I play around with Attack and Release I can tell I am getting closer to the sound, and as I am typing I am still messing around and getting closer so maybe I just need to keep trying stuff out?

Any hints or shortcuts?

Which synth? Bass or lead? I'll assume lead... Get the main sound you want ready, then just set some envelopes, amp should have 0 or very low attack, short decay and zero sustain and release. Now you can edit the Filter envelope and try something with the cutoff dropping in a similar envelope. Try that out, but I'm no genius with synth programming.

The 0 sustain and release and low attack and decay is exactly what I'm looking for for the initial lead synth! But as the lead gets more unfiltered, it sounds like the decay and release are getting looser. So how would I make a decay or release automation clip with Synth1 or can I not?

I firmly (yet humbly) beg to differ!

Okay, maybe other synths (and other producers) can do better. But 3xOsc is more than capable, if you use it right! Did you know that "Fat mode" essentially gives you 10 note unison on each of the 3 oscillators? That's 30 saw waves at once!

"Phase Randomness" is absolutely essential for any supersaw sound with 3xOsc...

Dark side of Hyrule is jammin!

(full track, as seen in FLMC9)

Thx for the 3xOsc tip, but Synth1 is initially much easier to use (at least for me right now).

well then. That's what's most important! I always found the lack of a "reset this knob to default" feature annoying about synth1, but it's definitely a neat synth, and it DOES do all sorts of neat stuff (ring modulation, FM, LFOs!) that 3xOsc doesn't.
