So, I'm trying to catch up on some theory, and other fun stuff I don't know much about. But I threw this together because (at the time) I didn't see many crisis core mixes around. That, and I ran into one techno type mix of this song when I thought to myself: "This should swing..."

Notes on March 31 work: I'm hoping this is close to what Gario was talking about. But I had some interesting junk happen. This plays in Em triads i, VI, III, VII. I changed part to EM, but the diminished vii sounded wrong, so It's a minor 7, which gives A# I, vi, iii, vii. It really puts it more in B there then E. Anyways, big headache figuring that out. I'm much better at something I can hit with a stick...

1) Changed trumpet solo and major chords around. Kept having to remind myself 'don't think in flats, stop thinking in flats' I tried to make things more subtle around the key/chord change.

2) Boosted piano volume and dynamics, as well as did various little things with volume.

3) Bumped my own thread. Again. No replies in a week. :-(

Okay, got some feedback on IRC. Newer version here:

Changed strings slightly, at least in the area of attack, not much with overall articulation yet. I'm only half sure of what I want to do, mostly an attack change.

Various volume automation added to help with dynamics.

Little tweaks and stuff.

Still could use feedback here too:tomatoface:

Hey, I remember this! First thing's first, please add some sort of name to the files vs. 'v1, v2, v-it's-over-9000', etc. It's not a problem for most people, but I like to hold on to older files of WIPs and compare the progress, but these are replacing your other WIPs...

Then again, it's a deterrent for creepy collectors like me, so maybe you'll want to stick to your naming convention...

Oops, I'm an idiot, you've got the source on your first post... I read the second post and thought it was the first :P

Onto the music...

If I recall, one of the issues that you were having before was that the harmonies never changed from the original. It's the case in this version, as well. I'd recommend expanding the music by writing some new material for it harmonically. It sounds OK where it's at, but the harmonies are used for four and a half minutes, so I start to tire of the sound eventually. I'd post what I said before, but that would be too frickin' long for the regular reader :sleepzzz:. In short, I suggest some strategies to expand the harmonies used into something else... Try using some of that to compose new material for this (or make up stuff without referencing that PM; it may have been a little unclear what I was trying to say in that :P).

The sounds are cleaner on this version than your last one. The samples are a bit sub-par, though. I'd suggest finding better samples.

I like the arrangement and the use of many different instruments. You seem to have a knack for writing interesting textures and symphonic colors.

In short, very nice arrangement, but it doesn't overcome the lack of harmonic variety. If you fixed the harmonies and used some better samples this would be a very nice piece!

Thanks, harmony is still something I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around. Time to spend at least a day reading up on the subject.

I'm not entirely sure what to do about sub par samples, the trombone and trumpet have reverb on them and tube leveler, The strings just have the reverb; so I wonder if it's something about the leveler...

I had changing the chords suggested to me, but I've been lazy the past few days and haven't done much with this

I'll edit the ID3whateveritis tags on the mp3s I guess. The crap I gotta do for some people...

Added french horn part to help out the trombone in the middle.

I added an automation to the strings to play with different values. Right now it's adding a weird effect to the beginning, but I'm considering using it to go between soft and hard attacks in places as well.

Various little transition fixes and volume changes.

I put a tag and name in the MP3, but it's still 4:35 seconds long and ends at about 4:00. I must have done something to make it think there's more at the end :banghead:

4) Got rid of the 30 second silence at the end. It was rendering nodes on my volume envelopes.

5) This still seems rough around the edges for some reason, but I can't put my finger on it...
