So, now that the Highlander server is no longer needed, I should shut it down?

Too bad it didn't happen a few days ago, or we could have kept the CS:S server. Then again, NO ONE used the CS:S server during November (according to stats).

Oh right, I booted the CS:S server to steal its IP for the TF2 Beta server.

I beleive that atmuh has requested the use of the highlander server for his team.......

It's time for the great Steam Treasure Hunt!

Personally, I think this is ridiculous. The only way to get the best TF2 hat from this hunt is to complete every objective in this treasure hunt. And most objectives involve owning different games.

I figure I have a large enough Steam library that I might get one or two of those hats, but definitely not the third.

I wouldn't say this is any more ridiculous than pokernight at the inventory. In fact, I'd say it's less ridiculous. Because chances are if you get some of these achievements, you're legitimately interested in the games you own. It likely isn't going to be a reflection of who is willing to pay for items/hats (unlike pokernight), but rather a reflection of your interest in other games. Of course it doesn't hurt valve to have people who're insane enough to actually purchase enough games to unlock hats, and those insane people deserve to pay insane amounts of money to complete their collection. So it's win win!

I do find the name of the last hat amusing though. While its certainly displays the player's wealth.... the respect part is fairly ironic.

Right but anyone and everyone who bought that $5 game, and any other promotional hat game during its repective promotion, have demonstrated to valve that this is an extremely valid marketing scheme.

• If Sam&Max's pre-order numbers are blown out of the water while that promo was active (and they were) then maybe people will be willing to pay for a game that isn't even a stand alone title.
  

• If copious amounts of people buy an otherwise worthless game for $5, then maybe they'd be willing to dish out more than $5 for potentially well developed games.
  

• Then if enough people do that, maybe people will spend more than $20 for a worthless game. (and or a game that needs help selling)
  

Etc.

This isn't ridiculous. It's a glorified TF2 mannconomy shop. And it's in no poorer taste than the shop itself.

Side note: I know people who own R.U.S.E. because it looked good.

A required update for Team Fortress 2 is now available. The specific changes include:

- Added the hats for The Great Steam Treasure Hunt.

- Fixed a bug that enabled players to weapon switch away from the Iron Curtain during spin down.

That Treasure Hunt thing is...interesting. It was one thing to spend $4 for an amusing poker game that gave me five items, but I'm not about to go out and buy multiple games I have little to no interest in just for the sake of getting a hat. I already have two of the objectives by default, so if I luck out, maybe I'll get enough from Half Life 2 and Portal to get that first hat.

Pictures of the first two hats were added to the TF2 Wiki, but apparently the third hat wasn't in there... unless it's seriously going to look like a giant question mark.

The difference between the first two hats is that the treasure chest is closed on the first and open (with a particle effect of coins spilling out) on the second.

It's actively benefiting the other team and preventing your own team from progressing, so yes. Feel free to /slay anyone you see doing this.
