Best part of MAGfest? Winning a Neo Geo CD from OCAD!

Naw, that's not it...

Getting to play Tron for the first time in MANY years! I totally loved that game when I was a kid.

Naw, that's not it either...

Actually, the best part of MAGfest is getting to hang out with such a wonderful group of geeks that are a hell of a lot like me. You have no idea how good of a feeling it is to meet people that are genuinely glad to see you. It reminds me that I should be more social instead of locking myself in my cave for weeks at a time. I may be turning 37 next month but getting to hang out with all of you keeps me feeling young.

Dude that was you? I had no idea! I jokingly said "someone's about to steal that" on the way up the escalator. I thought you were some random non-OCR person or else I would have like, introduced myself, and stuff. :-P

ridiculous registration line

Yeah that kinda pissed me off too. I was like, yay! I'm in line for a badge at 2:30pm that gives me plenty of time to catch Josh Whelchel's panel at 5pm. Boy was I wrong.

MAGFest is over now :(

First I have to admit, I had more fun at MAG 8 than at MAG 9. The reason was mostly timing: MAG 8 really started with the New Year's Eve party, I was able to be there all day every day for the entire time, and I didn't miss a thing; MAG 9 was competing with other stuff I had going on at the same time and I had to miss chunks of Thursday and Friday. But other than that, it was just as awesome as always.

The bad:

  • Not as much concert variety--it was like 90% metal this year
  • Timing, like I was saying earlier

The good:

  • A_Rival and The Megas
  • More arcade game variety
  • OCRemix and OCAD panels
  • Parking (I FOUND PARKING IN THE HOTEL'S LOT ALL 4 DAYS, HAH)

The awesome:

  • Stevo, Brushfire, and Dyne all helped me out with getting some extra badges for Jenner & Anand. Really guys, thanks a ton.
  • Getting to see all the folks here, of course, and especially those of y'all I got to meet for the first time
  • Stevo's after-MAG wind-down party
  • Restaurants--both Kyoto Sushi (thanks for taking my suggestion) and Busboys & Poets (thanks to Amy for the suggestion)

The WTF:

  • Stevo I did not spend a decade studying Japanese so that I could translate FF7 porn!
  • Then again it's not the first time I've done that...
  • (EDIT: Video now has captions)

See you guys at MAG next time, and hopefully some of y'all even sooner than that!

By the way, next year I'm going to try to organize something ahead of time for dinners and Sunday lunch, so that it doesn't take us so long and folks can plan ahead (by 'ahead of time', I mean like 1-2 weeks in advance so we can get headcounts, reservations, etc.). I'd like to do Busboys & Poets again, and Kyoto Sushi again, if folks are up for it. Once we get word on if MAGFest 10 will be in the same place, we can start getting that together. KF

One of my favorite things was this ...

Captured on my alesis field recorder.

WHAT THE Rubber-Ducky-icon.png!

I didn't know you were recording this! That's AWESOME! That live performance completely took me by surprise too. I especially liked Vinnie's performance! Hehe. Did they record a video of the OCR panel? o.o

edit: I love Larry's enthusiasm XD!!

I plan on making a fuller, detailed post later when I'm not so tired (I got home at 4:30AM ish last night) but I just want to say that magfest was an unbelievably awesome experience and I enjoyed the (sadly) few moments I spent with you all.

As I said to Brushfire after we left the hotel, someone needs to come up with a way to be in four places AND sleeping at the same time.

EDIT: Also, while I'm here, I have to give props to Brushfire for making this trip possible for me. You are an unbelievably awesome dude; thanks so much.

I found this picture of Brushfire in his Pimp Ash costume, on the off chance that anyone managed to miss it.

Also if anyone saw a Spy running around with an Engineer mask, that was me. Hi!

Awesome, loved that getup.

...and...

Hi! :-o

I agree, sir. Both in the need to be less hermetic than a certain Ol' Ben, and in the awesomeness of reveling in fellow MAG geekery. I don't usually feel terribly comfortable around people, but MAG's atmosphere definitely lightens the pressure. :-)

Hey guys.

I just got home and I am beat.

My highlights were:

*Finally meeting Shnabubula. Sam is a good friend and I'm super thankful that he came out to this year's Mag. He even played me some Tori Amos and FFVI on piano and is an amazing dude all around. Also he has the highest fucking liquor tolerance ever! lol

*Getting to hang with Liz once again, and getting to doll her up!

*Hanging with Matt Pollard. He's a pretty cool guy and doesn't afraid of anything... Especially booze drinkin' leeches *_*

*Sumeet punching Ari in the gut in the stairwell :J

*Lukas and Ari "wrasslin'" in A_Rival's room.

*Meeting Beatdrop. Dain is about one of the most refreshingly jaded-seeming individuals I've met in a long time. I mean that in a good way.

*That weird talk between Sam, Liz, Alex, myself, and Dain during the last leg instead of sleeping.

*Getting Jade extremely drunk. She was hilarious. The next day was a bit rough for her though lol...

*Basically bar-tending for everyone and their mother regardless of what room I was in or what drinks were available. I vaguely remember by the end of the last night, I was just handing out straight alcohol and getting compliments on my mixing abilities.

*wildfire making ME a drink for once!

*Getting to hang with Jade and Abadoss in our room. Despite our original want for privacy, you guys were very nice, fun, and polite roommates and I enjoyed it.

*Korean BBQ w/ melody and co.

*Getting to meet Hiroki Kikuta. I liked him, and I like his POV on things, even when he's getting asked some friggin' off the wall weird questions.

*Randomly getting to hang with Doug on our flight home. He was on our flight randomly but it was delayed, so he was put on another flight, and we were put on yet another flight... Then his new flight is delayed and he is put back on our new flight, and we got to sit together drinking booze and playing more video games :D

*Doug and Sam's duet. I think what I liked the most is that everyone there was just really enjoying themselves.

*The party at Stevo's... Things got extremely... interesting by the end.

*Stevo and Val's engagement is a beautiful thing.

*Meeting Shariq with a soft roll of the r.

*Meeting new people like mp, donut, sumeet, pablo, Velocifero, that hat guy, that irish guy, dragon avenger... And hanging with my old crew...

*Niraj loving/respecting everyone... a LOT... starla and Rama being chill as always... Stevo being a great host... Dhsu, always running into him and it's always "Hey there"...

*NOT losing my glasses lense.

Dislikes:

*Losing my ID

*Ari losing his wallet at the Korean restaurant

*A pretty bad hangover most of day 2

*Our booze almost gone on the first night

*THE ELEVATORS!

*Jamspace crud at the end :(

*strike # 2

*parking :(

I probably forgot a lot, but overall it was a great second Magfest for myself (and Ari) and I am sad that there wasn't enough time to hang with everyone, but there's always next year!

I know... It definitely was a tad unusual to see folks at MAG as dressed up like this:

:)

They looked awesome though! And actually, Jade, Velocifero, and I were chatting with Dale North Saturday night, and he suggested that at some point, MAG should do a black tie affair one night with dinner in one of the panel/ball rooms for anyone interested. I think this is a fantastic idea.

The entire trip was so incredibly amazing. MAG 6 and 8 were fantastic of course, but it just feels like this was the best one yet. Seeing everyone again after the 6 month gap since Otakon was great, rooming with Shariq was boss, meeting folks in person for the first time like Jade and Wildfire was awesome, and having Hiroki Kikuta draw a nutsack on the back of my Secret of Mana cartridge was exquisite. Glad Shnabubula was able to make it to this one! I can't WAIT for M10.

My pictures are all up on Facebook now, though there's a couple of them I'll have to manually lighten later on. My camera is brand new, and while it's good, I clearly didn't have time to figure out the best settings.

Yes please to a MagBall. I'm always looking for an excuse to dress up nice.

So many awesome things.

Got to jam with Prince of Darkness, DrumUltimA, prophetik, couple random good drummers, audio_fidelity, Brandon Strader, Aislean, norg, Stemage, Kirby Pufocia, Adam Henry (stemage's bro), diotrans, and a couple random dudes who were amazing at their respective instruments.

I tried doing some vocals with varying degrees of success, I performed for OCR, got an abominable picture commissioned for the OCAD panel by one Kevin Bolk, did the ThaSauce panel becuase I am on the radio station.

I only played one game of magic the gathering during the con, what the hell. haha. I also had a great time seeing some of the bands particularly metroid metal and powerglove. And I hung out with some of the metroid metal dudes a bunch. Which is interesting kinda.

What a scattershot magfest, but so fun.

Tequila - never again for me.

It made me... :lmassoff: and then... :sleepzzz:

hahahahaha

I still love you! You kept mixing me drinks and I couldn't say no.

I recall this and freaking out in my head that Dale North took the time to speak to us and be EXTREMELY friendly and awesome overall. I was super impressed. What a nice guy! His idea is fanastic and I'm definitely up for it as I love to dress up in pretty things and nice make-up! ;-)

Crap dude, I thought I met you at MAG VII. I guess I mis-read back then when you added me on Facebook a loooong time ago (before I deleted it and started a new one.) I met a lot of people there and the time spent was brief. I have grown out of my shyness and grown/matured a lot since then. I've become much more social and open with people. Especially with this community because they understand and accept me. :)!! It was also my short honeymoon so bLiNd and I spent a lot of time together. If it was the first time we met, then it was friggin' incredible. I see us being very close! ^_^

I did get at least one very persistent creeper talking to me and it was pretty uncomfortable, but not nearly as bad as what was mentioned in that thread. This is definitely something that needs to be watched for, and I know it can turn off a lot of girls from a con like this.

I hope you let this guy/girl know they were being a pain, rather than passively enduring. No matter who it was. Don't mean to stereotype or accuse, but I notice that some of the same women who complain about these situations dare not speak up IN the situation itself. Not blaming, just saying a bit more assertiveness can go a long way.

Oh, Vinnie and Amy did look slick, no doubt. In my book, 'unusual' or 'odd' does not correlate to 'bad'. :P

Dunno how I feel about a fancy dinner party -- but I must agree, having such a picture from the Fear of Angels brainchild himself.... incredible! It was sweet enough to see him in person and listen to his deep-sea trance.
