installed/played sonic 4

aaaaaaaaaand it sucks

I downloaded the demo on XBLA, I just wasn't that impressed with the game. I don't want to tear it apart, mostly because I'd like to see SEGA keep trying to go into WHY we liked the original games in the first place. But for some reason, it just felt slow for some reason...

That's just me....

I was a bit disappointed with the music of the casino stage. The nighttime stages were always my favorite. (sonic2 and sonic cd (american st)for sure).

I wish Sega wasn't so damn masochistic with their best IP's. Sega was going to buy Fighting Force from eidos and label it the next Streets of Rage. Thank God that didn't happen.

So what do you think Sega will ruin next? Shenm-oh wait. Jet Grind Rad- Golden A- Toejam n'- hmmm.

I guess the only thing thats left is Panzer Dragoon. The one game that didn't suck but made up for its not sucking by not selling.

I grew up with the origional sonic games sonic games. sonic has been my favorite video game and character since I was a kid. I think Sonic 4 is great. as far as the music, it has very close to that origional feel (after all the music was composed by someone who composed a few tracks in sonic 3 and sonic & knuckles). my only real complaint is the physics. needs a lot of touching up. also I agree that sonic feels a bit too zoomed in. another problem is the the small amount of levels (though the changes from each act almost make up for it... and after all, it is only episode 1!)

heres what I would rate the game

graphics.......8/10

art............9/10

physics........3/10

classic feel...7/10

music..........8/10

over all.......7.5/10

remember people no matter the quality of the game, as bungie says about halo3 to mlg community ''it not Your game'' altho it could need improvments.

Don't you mean "it could use improvements"?

Regardless, I won't go into Sonic 4 with high expectations because the only Sonic game I could consider "growing up on" was Sonic 3 and then straight to Sonic Adventure when I was the age when I could actually understand what I was supposed to be doing in a video game. I'm willing to give it a shot though.

'

EDIT:

BLECH. I don't care much about the graphics, but the game play does not feel like classic Sonic at all. It's too slow, the homing attacks get in the way of everything (like if you go to jump while in spin ball and there's a spring around, instead of jumping he just goes to the spring and probably hits the wall that was in the way.), as others said, the zoom is way too much.

Levels needs to be much more grand. It literally takes less than 2 minutes to complete an act.

I know that most of the people here hated on it, but I really enjoyed the demo -- regardless of some smaller issues here and there, they have nailed the overall feel of what makes Sonic fun, at least for me. I also really enjoyed creative use of the homing attack to extend spring jumping sequences (bounce off of multiple enemies in a row, etc).

I also really like the music to the first stage, though I'll admit having a preference for Gecko's Genesis synth version. That's nostalgia getting in my way though and I acknowledge it.

If Colors is of this high of quality or a step beyond, then I think Sega will have finally brought Sonic up to speed (pun intended) with modern technology.

I prefer to judge a game purely on its own, without any of that nostalgia bullshit clogging my judgement.

That said, the same simply isn't very good at all. The momentum is screwy; I don't like stopping in mid-air for no apparent reason, and uncurling from ball form EVERY TIME I go off a ledge or jump is horrible. The air dash is wonky at best and downright lethal at worst, and the music is just so uninspiring (aside from Mad Gear).

But worst of all: why is Sonic so SLOW?

That said, I kinda like the special stages--it has the right amount of challenge without being terribly frustrating.

it isn't a marked improvement

it's still glitchy

the camera is still awful (just in a different way)

and the only improvement they really made - the fact that sonic doesn't say anything with that awful, awful voice - is overruled by the music being terrible (the music being, at times, the only good thing about previous sonic games)

after listening to people's opinions build up, I have decided that the worst thing about the game is no longer the music - it's how people are still

STILL

convincing themselves that it's worth something simply by virtue of it being a sidescroller

basically this game turns out to be shitty but every single sonic fan is going to see a single modicum of improvement from the last game whatever it was and use that to justify actually purchasing this overpriced piece of junk

sega is going to take that as 'continue to make sonic games, don't really need to make them very good'

and they're just going to keep pumping out shitty ones

way to be a part of the problem

I strongly disagree, the physics as opposed to older Sonic games are really terrible. The homing attack is really buggy and the differences in what you can do in spinball with what you can do running are very different from Sonic 3.

Also, it feels really slow. There is too much zoom, which makes you THINK you're going fast but you're really not. If I had to compare to Sonic 3, he's running pretty slow. I've just recently been playing Sonic 3 over and over, so I had that mindset, and when I tried to play Sonic 4, it felt really weird.

I'm not saying this is a bad game or anything, but if Sega was going for a classic feel, they have a long way to go.

Did anyone of you ever consider the fact that it isn't possible to emulate Sonic's genesis physics when the game isn't on the genesis? Just look at NSMBWii. Did Mario have his physics from the original SMB? No. Point me to a platformer that feels exactly the same as an old one, but uses a different game engine, different console, and different graphics.

can you explain to me how you came to this conclusion

I'm trying to go through it logically in my head but unfortunately there isn't anything wrong with mine
