I've been thinking about this for months, and I think I've gone as far as I can without shelling out for some decent software. But I have a question: looking at the different versions, I'm not sure if I want the Fruity Edition or the Producer Edition. Which should I get? I'm leaning toward Producer, since I'll always be able to "grow into it." But old habits die hard, and I'm still ridiculously cheap. So I'm also wondering if I could get away with buying Fruity. Just how advantageous are the advantages, and can equivalent features be gotten for free with different software? Would I be able to upgrade later if I change my mind, rather than paying full price for the next version up? Your thoughts are welcome. Flexstyle Posted February 14, 2011 Share Posted February 14, 2011 I made the mistake of starting out on the Fruity version when I first bought FL Studio, back at version 6. While you can indeed simply upgrade, I'd recommend just spending all the money right now--the Fruity version is, in my opinion, a crippled version of FL. Nabeel Ansari Posted February 14, 2011 Share Posted February 14, 2011 Getting Fruity means you have no Slicex, audio recording, Edison wav editor, MIDI or Audio clips in playlist, envelope automation, (not as important stuff now: ) SynthMaker (if you're into that sort of thing), Vocodex, and Convolver (for "high quality" reverb effects). English: You're screwing over your workflow if you don't get producer. Even electronica music uses audio clips (maybe you freeze tracks or process recordings of other samples online) and without clips you're basically confining yourself to a simpler but more obsolete, less flexible, and outdated form of writing in FL Studio. Download Version: No $50 Image-Line Cash Voucher Boxed Version: No lifetime free updates (buy each version of FL Studio or buy Lifetime Free Updates with your $50 voucher) I would go with download, I'm not entirely sure, but you can check Image-Line's FL Studio Homepage to compare box to download. Zephyr Posted February 18, 2011 Share Posted February 18, 2011 It's definitely worth it to go with Producer off the bat, you won't get a satisfactory experience with anything less. Whether to go with XL is your choice, but go with producer at least. I'd also recommend download version, it's worth it for the unlimited updates. Here is a link to the official site with a comparison of what is included in which version: https://www.image-line.com/flstudio-feature-comparison/ As a last note I completely agree with the others in avoiding the fruity edition of FL Studio, audio clips are essential for music production and so is recording for a lot of genres. If you want something cheaper that is fully featured, check out Reaper, though it isn't as good for producing electronic music, it has everything you'd need and is better for recording at the very least.
