What's the deal on remixing remixes?

I haven't seen and Killer Instinct "Killer Cuts" remixes anywhere - and I'm wondering if it's taboo in the community to remix someone else's remix"?

For instance.

Though I am not certain of OCR's stances on accepting remixes of remixes, Dwelling of Duels held a Re-Cover Month last August; artists were tasked with remixes songs by previous DoD participants. And Prince of Darkness remixed SnappleMan's "Dead Batteries" off the Sonic 3 album back in June '10. So it's definitely not taboo.

You might be mistaken about the kind of remixes ocr is about. We write our own arrangements and produce them ourselves, and typically don't use any of the original audio, the same goes for a lot of vgm remixers in the scene. I could be mistaken, but a quick listen to the example you linked didn't reveal anything drastically different from the original, so there's no reason to remix the remix. Can't speak for the entire remixing scene, but that's how I see it.

To turn your question around, why would anyone remix a remix when they can remix the original? :P

You can remix any track thats made specifically for the game. If the track is a remix of a non-video game track, but the remix makes it into a video game, its a no (exception is tetris).

However, to my knowedge, the judges allow you to pick the precise audio that you're remixing as long as the original was from a game. Say if you chose to remix the Dark World music from Super Smash Bros Brawl rather than the original from a Link to the Past, I assume they'd let you since the two are distinct versions in their own right and could influence the writing process of your remix. It might be worth another judge coming in just to clarify tho, just in case i'm wrong :P

How about Shnabubla doing a piano cover of zircon/sixto's "Subterranean Kamikaze" from TMNT 4?

In the end I suppose it would come down to the talent of the artist(s). And just because something does not qualify for the submission standards doesn't mean it couldn't be posted in the Workshop forum.

Can't post ≠ taboo. Can't post = doesn't meet site guidelines/requirements.

Well...

5. Submissions that are revisions or new versions of existing, posted ReMixes will only be evaluated as additions, not as replacements, and must be substantially different. Revisions are not encouraged and may be held to higher standards.

So, you can, but it still has to pass all other standards AND stand apart enough from both the original source material and the arrangement being arranged. That includes little-to-no direct sampling of the original audio, i.e. you can't do traditional remixing/sampling.

If you were to base something off an existing VGM arrangement that's not an OC ReMix, similar rules apply, but we do have at least one.

(GarA)Sooooo, If I did Epic Melodic Death Ska versions of all of Mcvaffe's remixes they would still pass?

(GarB) Answer: No they wouldn't because you suck Gar.

No really, this might be a good idea for a future compo. ;-)
