I agree: even though the range of sources is a bit more constrained this time, it's still a few dozen non-obscure titles that actually have music, and there's always option B. Plus, even if two pairs pick option A, and pick the same title, they're not going to do the same thing with it. The PRC doesn't have a problem with that, and even in Darke's tournaments, two people are forced to use the exact same sources.

WillRock pointed me to the criteria here since he has a dilemma on his hands, and I took a look at it - that second criterion is near impossible. There are 0 songs on OCR that satisfy that criterion for reference - that's an incredible hole, and I would think it isn't for lack of trying. I can't even find a game that would satisfy it.

Don't you mean the first criterion?

I found a small number (less than 100) of NES games that were released before then by searching Mobygames, but technically, I guess those were FamiCom rather than NES releases... maybe. They'd still count as home gaming titles though (it's called FamiCom for a reason).

I have a question about the criteria, since trism came to me with concerns, and i've seem to come up with a bit of a hole in the criteria requirements which makes it VERY hard to pick a source.

Be based on a source or sources from a console or PC game (not arcade game) released on or before October 18, 1985 (the launch day for the NES in the U.S.

Why aren't arcade games allowed? I've noticed that basically all the notable games released before the date in question were in fact released on arcades (donkey kong, ice climbers, mario bros etc) and they are very important parts of video game music history. As a result, if people who don't do chiptune style music, and don't have a vast in depth knowedge of games before this date, (which is most people) they've got to look into alot of obscure titles, from consoles they probably don't own (like C64 or famicom), only to find out that the games that are familiar to them were either released after the date you've picked or were in the arcades. Yes, you can still remix SMB, which is what I reckon all these people will end up doing, so you'll probably end up with at least 3 SMB overworld theme remixes, since its by far the most obvious choice and no one is going to be bothered enough to do the trivial research required to look into anything else :P

I understand the release date rule, but the arcade rule just seems to make things harder for everyone involved and rules out some important and historical games for no reason.

Sorry if i'm being awkward, but your criteria seems very hard to hit for some people depending on their skills and personal styles. I'd suggest criteria thats a little less "specialist" next time :)

EDIT: Bahamut actually beat me to the post, I was just asking some people to see if my concerns were valid.

Any of the NES launch titles qualify: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_game_console_launch_games

There are also a number of Atari and Colecovision games with solid (if limited) soundtracks, and a substantial number of PC games. Moon Patrol is one such that does in fact have an OCR entry already. If I were participating, I'd probably pick Pitfall 2.

Or, there's always option 2.

Oh, I see the confusion. Not only arcade (I thought that was clear when we mentioned SMB). The reason is that games like Dragon's Lair showed that arcade games had no real limitations as far as what they could produce. Anything that had both an arcade and a console release counts, as long as the track in question appears in the console version. Ice Climbers is fine, and a great choice.

Ah great. Thanks for clarifying! :D

Well, it seems that tomorrow is the cut-off date for me.

I just graduated high school yesterday, and need to head off for a 'post-graduation-trip'.

So, here's hoping what I turn in is okay! :D

Ectogemia has honestly been the best.

He's really helped a bunch, and what's more, he's the nicest dude ever.

Thanks a bunch for holding a compo like this MindWanderer, you're really onto a killer concept! <3

Well, I had been told this past weekend was supposed to be of the 4-day variety. Instead, we worked 8- to 10-hour days all weekend. So the bad news is that I haven't gotten my ideas even coherent enough yet to submit a WIP. :/

The good news is that the meager work I've done is still more than I've accomplished in about a year, and I have a clear enough idea of what I want to do with it that I won't be dropping the project altogether. Also, the work I did have to do could pay some dividends shortly. I was on the group helping prepare decorations for our dining facility for Thanksgiving. I helped design and build a pretty sweet (pun intended) gingerbread village that could get me selected onto a competitive culinary team, which would just be awesome. (And get me out of Alaska for a while.) Fingers crossed!

Best of luck to the rest of you, and I'll be sure to keep the thread posted when my remix actually gets somewhere.

:( That's too bad.

I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the mixes though!

Trying to think of a name for mine...

Sucks for us listeners. Although I'm really happy for you that your hard work is paying off!

Actually, I'm really interested to see what music gets produced from this one; it's bracketing a time period that I've never really had the time to look into the music of, right before I started gaming on the old IBM my dad had in the basement when I was growing up.

I had a ridiculously busy couple of weeks with work and kids and whatnot which prevented me from getting anything done, then on Saturday night when I actually had some free time my laptop went completely haywire and wouldn't let me open an explorer window, let alone my DAW. I reckon I've found the issue; a corrupted wav file on my desktop that Windows was trying to generate a preview that was essentially creating a very local denial of service attack ha ha. Here's a PSA people; friends don't let friends use dirty wav files.

I had that problem once and it took me forever to figure out. It's unbelievable how an OS can let a failing preview generation of a corrupt file bring your whole machine down to its knees! :whatevaa:
