ChronoNet - Chrono Trigger: Undersea Palace

I'm not entirely how I managed to make something so good, but this is definitely my best ReMix yet.

This time, I attempted to make something that's more-or-less pure dubstep.

With the new theme that I introduced with version 5, the name of the ReMix will be chaning. As of version 5, that is planned to be either 'Chrono-net' or 'Chrononet'.

Enjoy!

I think the drum is buried a bit. There is a bit too much compression at some point. But the structure is cool. And the sounds well chosen.

A better drum track could enhance the whole by a lot.

Keep at it. thumbs up for 2:14!

Thanks for the advice. I was afraid the drums were a bit muddled. Is it all of the drums, or just the kick ? When you say better drum track, do you mean arrangement wise, or production wise?

I'm pretty happy with the arrangement. I can't say it's finished, because I'm sure that I'll get ideas for it while I work on finishing the whole thing.

I'm not sure about the production. It sounds pretty good on my headphones, but not so much on my speakers. They're not monitors, so I'm not sure which is more reliable. It would help a lot if I could get some advice on the mixing. Is the bass heavy enough? Are the drums loud enough? Too loud?

I'd say there's too much sub bass content relative to actual bass content. You really can't hear sub bass that well, so you need a real bass to hold down the fort.

What's happening is that you have a sub bass sustaining under a rather thin wobble until 1:58. What I would suggest working towards is thickening the wobble and rolling off the subs a little bit to compensate for the louder 60~120Hz. At 1:58, the notes just sound kinda dissonant in a weird way. It feels like two different keys to me.

The kick is pretty good, but maybe the snare could be less smacking/clap-like and more thwapping/tight/snappy. I think clap-like is fine though if it feels stronger.

To me, the mastering feels too loud though. Not in the sense that it's literally too loud, but in that it's kinda overcompressed.

I lowered the Sub Bass a bit, and boosted the Wobble Bass. It sounds a lot better now. Thanks for the help!

For the snare, I saw what you meant about it sounding a bit thin, and I layered a few more samples in there to give it some more punch. I want something that has a tail to it, though, so I kept the original snare sound too.

The section at 1:58 I had used wobble bass samples, but neglected to tune them properly for the section. That should be fixed now. Thanks for calling that out! I totally overlooked it.

Regarding the dynamics, I had some minor compression on the master channel. I got rid of that for this version, though.

Okay, so things *are* sounding better. Something that still kinda bothers me though is that the snare now sounds noise-wave-like. Could just be me, but I'd like it to have a different sample for the tail. Perhaps some transient shaping might help, where you'd increase the sustain of the sample manually. It depends on the sample, but then you don't have to pick a sample that already has a tail to get a tail. If you are short on samples you like with that kind of description, you get limited on your choices for layering.

In general, I think the production sounds good now though. The arrangement, I think, feels kind of cookie-cutter. The buildups resemble 'traditional' EDM buildups. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I thought I'd let you know. The flow of the arrangement seems to just be: something -> buildup -> main -> buildup -> something -> breakdown -> buildup -> main -> buildup -> something. That's a lot of buildups. :P (3:05 is a copy+paste of 1:17.)

Overall, the loudness of things stay kind of consistent, and the buildups don't really feel like they're crescendoing. It could be the low end. I feel like the dynamics of this stay relatively constant as a result. Nothing sticks out to me as a climax except for 1:58, sort of.

I'm taking it in a bit of a different direction now, I think. I got inspired by '

' by The Others. I liked the evil computer/terminator feeling, and although I'm not sure exactly how much of that made it into my remix, I have a goal in mind now.

I'm probably going to be changing the name since I was never completely happy with what it was. For now, it's tentatively 'Chrono-net' or 'Chrononet' - I'm not sure which - but I think that'll probably stay.

I know that the transition from the interlude to the finale isn't very good, and suggestions would be great, but I did want to get a new version out sooner, rather than later so I can get some feedback about the direction that I'm taking it in.

Man, that track by The Others, pretty f-ing awesome. It's rough, nice beats, plus it has that unpolished rough-around-the-edges underground sound to it, which I love. Awesome track, really. If the Prodigy were making dubstep back in their Music for the Jilted Generation days, that's what it would sound like.

Undersea Palace does have some similarities to the Terminator theme, which I have exploited to some degree in my Chronodyne remix. I would say that you have done a good take on the arp - it reminds me of Marylin Manson's Resident Evil theme.

My main issue with your remix is that aside from that arp-like pattern, I have a hard time recognizing the theme. This alone would probably be a dealbreaker for the judges. Dial back on the departures from the theme, and you can have something very enjoyable on your hands!
