OCR00030 - Contra "AMEN Reflux"

Contra 'AMEN Reflux'

This is an "old school" djp mix so of course it has the flanging/warping instruments and whatnot. Back in the day I could spot a djp mix a mile away as they all had this very distinctive sound to them. Since then djp has branched out and really improved. Still, this mix pretty good! Kind of has a "disco" flavor to it like his Space Harrier mix, which wouldn't be my ideal choice for a genre, but it still is a pretty good mix!

Actually there are two different codes, infinite lives, and 9 lives per continue. Both are on sale @ GameSkins.com (I've got the Konami code one)

I downloaded this mix a while ago, but never really got around to listening to it. Strange, as I'm a HUGE Contra fan (I got a plug-in amp for my Game Boy just so everybody at school could hear the Operation C Contra goodness oozing from the speakers, and also got threatened a lot as a result.) I like it. It's not a straight up note-for-note beat for beat mix, which I usually prefer, but there's definitely something to it that keeps me listening. Not really the sort of mix where you can hum along even though you've never heard it before. I could definitely see myself using this mix as one of a few that I use to convince my friends (huge gamers, themselves) that there is actually some merit to game music. Download it, you IDIOTS!

I didnt really like this remix.

The instruments were to "unclear" warped? and disted.

the hihat was the most irritating sound.

i mean there was no relaxation.. the kind of nostalgia kick you usually get when you really recognize and love an old song..

to fuzzy and blurry instruments

i went kinda dissapointed when listening to this..

probably the worst remix dj pretzel has made..

all his other is high quality goods..

but this . i dont like

DJP's older stuff has a sort of, "cartoonish" sound to it. Like some kinda crazy all over the place effects processing, and interestingly matched synths. Pretty much all of his old mixes had this sound and this one's no exception. A pretty bland reinterpretation that doesn't really feel like it takes any risks and uses some pretty lame synths. Thankfully, DJP has gotten a lot better nowadays.

I don't know why but this remix just kinda grabs ahold of me and won't let go. I wasn't too sure about this song when I first listened to it but it's grown on me and wierdly it's one of my favorite remixes. It's just so wierd and wacky and stuff that it has it's own charm to it.

8.7/10

As a whole, I did not really get into this song as much as I did some of the other Contra remixes. It is a bit off, but still pays tribute to one of the most memorable songs ever the NES era. If this remix were done on the fly or just for plain fun, I can see why certain liberties were taken. I personally would stick to the original sound file.

Though DJP has come a long way, this is just a fair warning to other Contra enthusiats who might have unrealistic hopes as this being one of the greatest remixes ever.

it makes me think of the similar DOOM track, and at the same time the METALLICA track that both songs seem to have stolen from. it's still unoriginal, but it shows big influence on gaming music from metallica. where else would you get trax kickass enough for DOOM and CONTRA?

This one is kind of uneven; there are some great parts (the scrathing at 1:35) and some that leave me scratching my head (the looped laughing at 1:22).

Synthwise it has the entire kitchen sink thrown in, for good or for ill, and there is plenty to listen to. It's creative enough, but I think it needed a bit more focused direction.

I liked it. There, I said it. As far as bringing an awesomely complex melody into the larger-than-life over-the-top style that was the original OverClocked Remix, this is a huge success. It may represent a more juvenile direction, especially in retrospect, but for me this is fun, infectious videogame music turned up to eleven.

You need a selective palatte for this sort of stuff, maybe. But to me, this is still strong on all fronts, almost ten years on. Doesn't hold up to the output of the site nowadays obviously, but I consider that an irrelevant observation. More than worth a chance.

I can't unhear the Brentalfloss version whenever I hear the original theme. But this isn't bad at all. This is the kind of ReMix that grows on me and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I liked the scratching bits after the looping laugh, but not so much the laugh. All in all, one of the better early OCR's. Long live the Konami code.

Aw, Contra, or Probotector if you happened to be in Europe. So many fond memories of trying to beat this game. I never did know the cheat but then I was like 5 years old. The soundtrack is just fantastic and so its great to see that this series has had some remix love. The track is pretty good and the arrangement defintely gives a fresh feel to the source. I'm not sure the style is quite my thing, but theres a lot of energy and it defintely keeps the vibe of the game. The ending is just amazing. That final motif is expertly placed. A fun and zany mix worth checking out if you're a fan of the game.

Oooooh yeah that twisted my ears in the beginning. Actually this whole thing was kind of abrasive, not one of my favorite DJP jams, sorry friend. But it evolved into a pretty creative doodle of the source. Even when the instruments aren't super fun to listen to and the dynamics are nearly nonexistent, at least the notes being played are arranged in a very cool way.

It's just funny how some of these first mixes, including a lot of DJP ones, use these strange instruments and are this weird genre of electronic music, a specialized sound you really don't hear outside of the VGM realm, besides some Newgrounds folk. It's just very distinctive for me and I can't for the life of me figure out why it stands out that much for me. Iunno
