The People's Remix Competition 451
PRCv19-13

Hello everyone and Welcome to the People's Remix Competition!

In PRC449 it was TheVideoGamer who won the round. He picked the source for this round.

On 7/10/2022 at 1:35 AM, TheVideoGamer said:

Why is the music in the Ape Escape series, sooooooo gooood!? Like every track is just a winner, i absolutely love it. Minus the 2nd one, which is also good, but more of a conventional video game score. Still though, i can't get over how every track is just...awesome. I ended up making a list of sources from 1st to 3rd, and i still don't think that's enough. I ended up picking this one, because it was the one i was ended up returning to quite frequently, and also i didn't want to spend ages choosing a source. Believe you and me, the next time i win, i will be sending more Ape Escape sources to be remixed, because this soundtrack does not get enough love.

It's just very weird and creative music as well. We have a mixture of that 90's ethereal ambience, mixed with very thick but very light jungle breaks. Some tracks are very goofy sounding, almost like it belongs to some cartoony world. The tracks vary, but they all have essentially the same Jungle/DnB outline in all of them. It's really the melodic content/arrangement that dictates the style/sound. So some tracks sound cold, some sound mechanical, some sound dreamy, some sound goofy and cute, and of course some tracks have a series hard edge to them, akin to rock music. I settled for this track in particular, because not only did i like the very sparse cold wintery sound, but because it gave us a framework for essentially us to make it our own, to add some new idea. It's a semi-black canvas basically. I also picked it, because it was the easiest to create the MIDI for XD.

I've already submitted an Ape Escape source before, so most of you might already know the game i'm talking about. Plus i don't want to bombard this with soo much text. Essentially it's a monkey game, where you capture monkey's using a variety of tools. Enough monkey's will allow you to move to the next stage. Considered unique gameplay at the time. Although i can only pick one Ape Escape source, rest assured when given the opportunity, more will come soon.

Anyways, i think that's enough from me, i hope you do this one justice!

GAME: Ape Escape (PS1)

A bit over one year ago, in PRC429, there also was an Ape Escape round: https://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC429

The deadline is Friday July 29th 2022 at 10:59 am ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT), check the link https://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC451 for the exact time left. Make sure that the song is uploaded to ThaSauce or that there’s a download link posted in this thread. Two days extra.

You may enter as many mixes as you like and work with as many people as you like on each mix. You are free to create a second ThaSauce account for that if you use ThaSauce, it's needed to be able to upload a second remix if you use ThaSauce. Of course you can also upload it somewhere else and put a download link in this thread.

Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted in this thread.

Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they receive a free first place vote added onto their score.

The winner of this round may select the source for PRC453.

TheVideoGamer can enter with a bonus song and has a double vote.

You can find the full rules list at this page as well.

GOOD LUCK!

Welcome to the voting stage

The mixing stage is over. This round has 3 songs and a bonus by TheVideoGamer. The following people compete against each other:

Hleet

Souperion

To vote, do the following:

Visit https://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC451 and listen to all the entries

Scroll to the form at the bottom of the screen or click PM.

Fill in the entries from first to third in the ThaSauce form or fill in your top 3.

State a reasoning for it.

Participants are encouraged to vote and leave feedback. They get a 3 point bonus, but they are not allowed to vote for their own track. They should fill in their fjrst place and leave the other boxes empty (or fill in TheVideoGamer.)

Always look in this thread to find out who's the winner of the round after the voting stage instead of only looking at ThaSauce for the results.

TheVideoGamer has a vote that counts twice.

You have until Monday August 1st 2022 10:59 AM ThaSauce time (11:00 UTC, 12:00 GMT) to vote.

If you vote by PM make sure that your top 3 is clear. I prefer something like this:

(To)

(Subject)

PRC ## Vote

(Message):

1: (remixer A )

2: (remixer B )

3: (remixer C )

It's results time

TheVideoGamer entered a bonus song.

Souperion got 5 points and gets the last place wooden spoon.

And the winner of PRC451 is Hleet with 6 points.

Hleet, you are the winner again. You may pick a source for PRC453. Send the source to me (with a MID/MP3 file, otherwise send a second source with a MID file) by PM, other options are PM me @ ThaSauce or by e-mailing to bambombim@gmail.com (I prefer a PM @Ocremix). Send your source as fast as you can, but before next Wednesday (10 August 2022), 11:00 AM ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT).

You may select any source from any game, but not a source with an OverClocked remix or a source which has been used in PRC before. An overview of the past PRC's can be found in the following links (I recently updated this site):

Congrats Hleet, looks like i forgot to vote lol. Then again there was only really 2 entries. so....

Feedback time!

Hleet - I like the use of the pads here, it still retains that moodiness of the original, even with how bright the sounds are. I'm a big fan of the bassline here, very juicy. The melody is also really great, captures the space-like feel and it's great. Drums however i wasn't a fan. Too acoustic for an electronic genre. They get in the way almost. If you have more of a electro set, then this could improve it immensely. The mix is top notch here, very great quality, and everything is blended nicely. The synth choices were actually great, best part for sure. It's just the drums i'm not feeling. Everything else is lovely though, awesome job on the arrangement! Well done!

Souperion - Nice job taking it slower. You've almost made it ambient rather than DnB like. Even though it's 2 chords, the original is very dreamy, opting for a lot of spaced out notes, so it really makes you feel like you're in space. In this one you kind of modified the chords in a way, that makes it Star Wars/Space Opera like, and i think that's a lovely idea. You're almost moving it into a different territory in itself. Big fan of the piano embellishments in this one. The mix is also really good, no muddiness here. You say you didn't have time, but it sounds to me like a lot of work was put in this. Now you did take away the drums, which is fine but can leave things a little empty in parts. But that's not the big problem for me. I don't know if i've just been accustomed to it, but the chords in the original were just what made the piece for me. Your remix changes the chords, loosing a bit of the dreaminess. It's not bad, just not my cup of tea. It rubs alongside the source in a odd way. But that still doesn't make the piece bad, as there were a lot of awesome moments in this. You did an awesome job on the arrangement! Well done!
