The A-Z of OCR Competitions

This thread will list every competition that has existed and currently exists on OCR, along with as much information as possible. Anyone planning on creating a new contest will need to provide me with the information required for this thread.

Conceptual Music Competition (CMC)

Description: The CMC is designed so that each participant enters an original piece of music based on a set theme. The participants take the theme and interpret it as they will to come up with something that fits. Any style can work, as long as it portrays a sense of what the theme is. Listeners then vote for whichever piece best fits the theme and the winner chooses the theme for the next round. Based on the rules of the former TOMC.

Fan Art Competition (FAC)

Description: People have a month to create (it must be started and finished during the month) and submit any kind of visual art that they choose. The only major rule is that the art must be in line with the month's theme, which is selected by the previous month's winner.

Final Fantasy 7 ReMix Competition

Status Finished. One-time Competition.

Description: A one-time competition that was designed to help fill in tracks for the Final Fantasy 7 ReMix Project. Participants were simply asked to arrange one of five themes from the FF7 soundtrack. At the end, people voted on their top three. Prizes were given out to first, second, and third place.

Fruity Loops Music Competition (FLMC)

Description: Entrants may use only Fruity Loops to remix their song and are only allowed to use everything that comes with Fruity Loops. They are not allowed to use their own samples, only the exceptions which are added in the first post of the contest. Every contest has a source tune, like Mega Man 3. The users have a month to finish their songs.

Status: Extended Hiatus

Description: A loosely-ruled comedy competition in which (nearly) any form of media on a set theme is accepted. Both the winner and the loser had a say in what the following theme would be. Ultimately, it allows the Administrator to use his authority in the most abusive and comedic way possible.

Iron Mix Competition (IMC)

Description: IMC was OCR's original continuing competition, founded by TimberWolf. A number of songs (usually one, but sometimes more) was selected by the contest administrators, and participants were given one week to remix the song(s) in the style of their choosing, unless additional rules were given. At the end of the week of mixing, the three IronMix Judges would review and rank each entry. A results thread would be posted, containing all of the feedback provided by the judges, as well as an overall tally that would yield a winner.

JHCompo (JHC)

Description: JHCompo is a 2-hour, weekly composition competition where entrants create original music based on the theme given. This MP3-based compo is held every Tuesday, and was created as a place for musicians to hang out and hone their craft. JHCompo is all-gear, so you can use whatever hardware or software you want. All the action happens at SolidComposer including the listening party, which is automated. For those new to the site: entrants must sign up for an account to upload their entries (in MP3 format) to the compo round page. The theme will appear at the start of the compo round. Once the 2-hour round is up, the listening party will start immediately at the compo round page. The compo is open to anyone, from beginners to the well-experienced.

One hour compo (OHC)

Description: Time slot: Thursdays at 6 PM Pacific, 9 Eastern. The compo is for everybody - If you just started writing music 3 days ago or have been doing it all your life, this is for you. Our goal is to improve our skills with these weekly hourly exercises, everyone is encouraged to participate and bring friends. Goal is to submit a mix in one hour. Discussion is held in #thasauce on irc.enterthegame.com during the compo, we also listen to the completed songs as a group. If you do not wish to participate in the chat, you may still submit a song via the website.

Original ReMixing Competition (ORC)

Status: Dormant

Description: The ORC was started as a sister competition to PRC. It initially ran with the same rules, the only difference being that the contestants remixed an original piece made by a person on OCR. The first source tune was made by ReactorZ0 to start the competition. From there, whoever won the competition would choose an original tune he/she made to be the source for the next competition. Voting is done by the general public.

Original Video Game Music Competition (OVGMC)

Status: Occasional Competition

Description: This competition was the inspiration for TOMC and subsequent spinoffs. A game theme or scenario is described at the beginning, and anyone participating must write a piece of music that adequately fits that theme. Usually, one or two weeks is given to do this. At the end, users vote on their top three, four, or five entries with descriptions on why they voted the way they did.

OverClocked ReMix Chess League (OCRCL)

Description: The OCRCL is the result of over two years of chess tournaments between OCR members. Using numerous formats, players are encouraged to play the best they can and embrace the world's oldest strategy game. League standings are maintained, and a social-competitive structure encourages community and competition between players. In addition to constant league play, occasional tournaments are held to recruit new members and provide freshness in the OCRCL.

OverClocked Remix Moves League (OCRML)

Description: Spearheaded by Darkesword, the strategy boardgame Moves is a great mix of luck and skill. Tournaments are held sporadically, with the last one in September 2006. The Moves league is currently looking at new options for play, including ladder rankings.

People's ReMixing Competition (PRC)

Description: The Peoples Remix Competition is a bi-weekly contest based on videogame music arranging. Started by reelmojo, the basic idea was for people to spend a week in remixing the chosen source tune (usually a song not covered on OCR yet). The forum goers vote on the tracks, and the winning musician from the vote gets to choose the source tune for the next PRC, or in the case of an anniversary/special event (e.g. remixing a song for an OCR site project) a different prize when allocated.

Thematic Original Music Competition (TOMC)

Description: The TOMC was designed so that each participant entered an original piece of music based on a set theme. The themes were often meant to represent various places, plot devices, or events usually found in video games/RPGs. Any style would've worked, as long as it portrayed a sense of what the theme was. Listeners then voted for which ever piece best fit the theme and the winner chose the theme for the next round. This competition was similar in concept to OVGMC and served as a fortnightly version of that competition.

Vocal Remixing Competition (VOCR)

Description: VOCR (not an acronym!) is OverClocked ReMix's official vocal remixing competition, in which participants compose, record, and mix their own original vocals for a selected video game arrangement each round. Founded by pixietricks, the contest is not designed to feature the best "singers" in the community, but rather the most creative and successful submissions based on three criteria: creativity (of melody, harmony, and original lyrics), vocal execution (pitch, rhythm, confidence), and production. Participants of all backgrounds are welcome, even rap artists!

The Writing Competition

Status: Bi-Monthly Compettion

Description: The Writing Competition Thread holds competitions starting at the beginning of every other month, with the submission, voting and judging stages usually lasting six weeks followed by a short break. There are three categories that the competitions fall under: short story, poetry, and freeform. Each competition focuses on one of these categories. it aims to be a non-threatening competition, and to help our entrants improve their creativity writing skills. Regardless of your skill level entry is encouraged. Feedback and helpful tips for entered works is given after each contest.
