FM is a type of synthesis. Basically what the Genesis/MegaDrive used to get its unique sound. The old Adlib cards for PCs back in the early '90s is another good example. Also, a chipdisk is basically a musicdisk with chiptunes on it. Here's another example of a chipdisk.
